We found the easiest option to be Uber, as you can pay with card and you don't have to worry too much about trying to haggle with the price. Another option is to take a tuk tuk, but this does take longer, and as we were visiting when it was still dark out, we felt much more comfortable in a private, closed vehicle.

Amber Fort vs Amber Palace

When we first saw pictures on our Instagram, we were under the impression that all of the places we saw were in the same place. However, this is NOT the case!

The Amber Fort (also known as Amer Fort) consists of the fort itself, the Amber Fort Palace, which is inside the main fort premises, and the Amber Fort walls, which are 12 km (7 miles) long, and go up and down stairs surrounding the city.

The city walls and palace are two different parts of the Amber Fort in Jaipur.

Both the Amber Fort and the city walls are worth a visit, and we're going to share the details of both experiences.

🐘 This is ANIMAL CRUELTY! Please DO NOT participate in riding the elephants, as it is extremely damaging to their spines.

Instead, take your lazy butt up the stairs. We promise, there really aren't that many! It's also a pretty scenic walk up, and you'll get beautiful views along the way.

🤫 The Secret Room at the Amber Fort Palace

We've seen this photo all over Instagram, and had to know where it was! Honestly, the room is kind of tucked away, making it a bit of a maze to get to.

The secret room is on the left side of the fort, and can be found by entering through the back left side of the fort, by walking through several passageways through the left from there. We got there early and asked a security guard to help us, and he happily walked us there.

🪜 Amber Fort Walls

The Amber Fort Walls are 7 miles of stairs that wind around the city, and are dotted with several towers.

There are some of these towers that are actually not open to the public anymore, due to past storms. but luckily there are still some really cool areas that you can reach.

We ended up getting completely lost, and climbing through the woods to get up to the stairs of one of the towers which was open, and right by the round platform you see below.

The best thing to do is ask a local the day before you plan on going to the city walls, so that you can safely make it to the areas of the city walls that are open to the public.

🐒 Monkeys at the Amber Fort City Walls

There are tons of monkeys that hang around the Amber Fort city walls. They're really adorable, but also can be very territorial. Make sure to keep your distance, keep your bags closed securely, and don't tease or taunt them.
