Gdansk is a port city situated in northern Poland, on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. It’s part of the region known as Pomerania, and together with Sopot and Gdynia, it forms the Tri-City area of Poland (Trójmiasto in Polish).

If you’re arriving from another Schengen country, you won’t need to go through immigration or customs when entering Poland.

The main language spoken in Poland is Polish. It's a Slavic language with some similarities to Czech and Slovak, but it can be quite difficult for outsiders to understand or pronounce. While you’ll see Polish used almost everywhere, younger locals especially are likely to know other languages as well.
Do They Speak English in Gdansk?
We had no problem communicating with people in Gdańsk. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, restaurants, and hotels. You’ll also find that many menus, signs, and transport information are available in English, especially in the Old Town and other popular spots.
Currency in Poland
Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro. Currently (August 2025, each 1 USD is equivalent to 3.69 PLN.
Can You Use Euros in Gdansk?
Euros are not accepted in Poland, so you'll have to take out local currency for an ATM or exchange some euros.
Will I Need Cash in Gdansk?
Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis and small shops, but it’s still a good idea to carry some cash, especially for markets, street food, or small purchases.
What Plug Do I Need for Gdansk?
Poland uses the same plug types as much of mainland Europe: types C and E (which are similar to type F). The standard voltage is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. If you're coming from the US or another country with different voltage, make sure your electronics are compatible.
Can I Drink Tap Water in Gdansk?
Yes, tap water is safe to drink in Gdańsk. While locals often prefer bottled water, especially when dining out, there’s nothing wrong with drinking the tap water. Feel free to ask for it in restaurants, although bottled water may be the default.

While traditional Polish food can be a bit heavy, we loved the vibe of the eateries in Gdańsk, especially the ones tucked away in the Old Town and along the river.
Here are some places we recommend going to:
- Chleb i Wino: a stunning restaurant with a few locations in the city that has cocktail towers, innovative dishes, and a trendy atmosphere
- Mandu: a super popular spot for handmade Polish dumplings (pierogi) with creative fillings and a cozy interior
- Drukarnia Café: one of the most Instagrammable cafes in the city, known for its stylish decor and excellent coffee
- Niepokorni: a modern Polish restaurant inside a boutique hotel with beautifully plated dishes and local flavors

Gdańsk is generally a very safe city, and we never felt uncomfortable during our time there. Like in any city, petty theft can happen, especially in busy areas like train stations or tourist hotspots, so keep an eye on your belongings. Compared to other European cities, Gdańsk feels calm and easygoing, even during the busier summer months.
Is Gdańsk Safe at Night?
We felt totally safe walking around Gdańsk at night, especially in the Old Town and along the riverfront. The city is well-lit and has a relaxed vibe even after dark. As always, stick to well-populated areas and use your usual street smarts, but there's no reason to feel uneasy exploring after sunset.

Is Gdańsk Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
Absolutely. Gdańsk is a great destination for solo female travelers. I have friends who have visited on their own and they said they never felt unsafe at any point.
If you're traveling solo, staying in a social hostel or joining a city tour is a great way to meet people and explore with others. Whether you're wandering the streets by day or enjoying the waterfront by night, Gdańsk feels friendly and welcoming.

Weather in Gdańsk
Gdańsk has a temperate maritime climate, with chilly winters and pleasantly mild summers. January tends to be the coldest month, while July and August are the warmest and sunniest.
Summer days are long and great for sightseeing, while winters are quiet, cozy, and often snowy. Being on the coast, Gdańsk can also be a bit windy, so layering is key year-round.
What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Gdansk, Poland?
The best time to visit Gdańsk is from June to August, when the weather is warmest and the city comes alive with outdoor dining, festivals, and beachgoers. If you’re looking for fewer crowds and lower prices, May or September are also great options.
We personally would have loved visiting in the summer, especially since Gdańsk has nearby beaches and nature to explore. But if you want something different, December is when you'll be able to experience the incredible Christmas market. This is when we visited, and it was one of our favorite Christmas markets in Europe!

Ready to pack your bags? Here are a few essentials we recommend bringing for your trip to Gdańsk:
- Comfortable shoes for walking around (forget the heels!)
- Bathing suit for the nearby beaches in summer or for saunas in the winter
