Top Things to Do in Cusco City: Explore the Heart of the Inca Empire

Cusco is known for being the gateway to Machu Picchu, and is one of our favorite cities in the world! But there are so many other reasons to visit the former capital of the Inca Empire. With a vibrant blend of ancient history and modern culture, there are so many incredible things to do in Cusco city. 

While most people focus on the trips they can do from Cusco, it's so important to give yourself at least 1-2 full days to enjoy all that the city itself has to offer. We always recommend travelers on their Cusco itinerary to spend their first day in the city to acclimate to the altitude, and at least one full day to enjoy the sites.

From wandering through centuries-old streets to immersing oneself in bustling local markets, Cusco provides an array of experiences that will make you fall in love with one of the most beautiful cities in South America. In this guide we're going to focus soley on all of the things to do in Cusco city itself.

How Much Time Do I Need in Cusco?

You could easily spend a month in Cusco with all there is to do and see! People tend to just spend 1 or 2 days in the city itself, and use the rest of their time for Machu Picchu or other treks around Cusco.

That being said, we'd highly recommend spending at least a few days in Cusco if you have the time.

Here's Something to Keep in Mind!

There is also a massive difference in the altitude in Cusco from where you may be coming from, and you'll want to adjust to the altitude before jumping into any big hikes or strenuous activities.

The first day we'd recommend staying in the city, and we'd recommend spending a full day enjoying all of the fun things to do in Cusco city after. As many things to do outside of Cusco will require intense physical activity, we'd also recommend taking a day between certain things like the Inca trail, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, or Ausangate 7 Lakes.

Cusco is an excellent place to base yourself, and you can have slower days enjoying these low kley activies in the city so you don't burn yourself out or get sick.

Okay, now for the fun stuff! While Cusco city isn't super big, it is actually packed with things to do and see, which is all the more reason to give yourself ample time to enjoy it.

Here are the top things to do in Cusco city - whether you are packing it all in 1-2 days, or slowly enjoying the charm of the city at a slower pace.

Hang Out at Plaza de Armas

The Plaza de Armas is the absolute heart of Cusco, and the center of where all the action happens in town.

Surrounded by colonial architecture and lively cafes, it's the perfect spot to soak in the city's vibrant energy, enjoy street performances, and snap photos of the iconic fountain.

This is also where all big events happen in the city, and where we got to celebrate an epic New Years Eve celebration.

Visit Catedral de Cusco

Located right in the heart of Plaza de Armas is one of the top sites in Cusco's center, Catedral de Cusco.

The cathedral a stunning example of colonial architecture that holds centuries of history. Explore its intricate altars, religious artwork, and fascinating blend of Andean and Spanish influences.

 Do a Free Walking Tour

There is so much history and interesting things to learn about this city, and one of the top things to do in Cusco to learn about its rich culture is to take a tour.

We personally love free walking tours because the guides are hardworking locals that work on tips. They typically know the best hidden gems, and are a great gateway to knowledge when exploring a new city.

Browse the Artisan Markets

This city is a shopping lover's paradise, and one of the best things to do in Cusco city is enjoying all of the different artisan markets scattered around the cobblestone streets. 

From colorful ponchos to alpaca garments, you’ll find unique souvenirs that support local communities and are truly special to Peru's culture.

 Check Out the Museum of Monastic Life

The Museum of Monastic Life in Cusco offers a unique glimpse into the daily lives of nuns during the colonial era. 

Located within the historic Monastery of Santa Catalina, the museum showcases religious artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and well-preserved monastic rooms.

The museum also has a pretty courtyard offering a peaceful escape from the busy streets of Cusco surrounding it.

 Explore the Archaeological Sites

Cusco is surrounded by fascinating archaeological sites, and they are all pretty close to one another. They are accessible on foot (as long as you don't mind hills!), or you can hire a tuk tuk to take you around from one to another.

The Archaeological site ticket includes all 4 of the following sites for one flat price of 70 soles/person, and it is good for two days. Sites cannot be paid for individually, and tickets are cash only, purchasable at any one of the 4 sites.

Saqsayhuaman

If you're short on time and only have time to check out one of the archaeological sites, then definitely make sure you go to Saqsayhuaman, which is a colossal fortress with impressive stone walls and stunning views of Cusco.

Tambomachay

Known as the "Inca Baths," this site features ancient aqueducts and waterfalls. Located about 8 km from the city, this site is believed to have been a place of worship dedicated to water and fertility.

Puka Pukara

Located just across from Tambomachay, Puka Pukara is believed to have been a military outpost or checkpoint used to protect the nearby Tambomachay and control access to Cusco.

While smaller and less elaborate than other Inca sites, Puka Pukara offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making it a scenic stop on any Cusco adventure.

Q'enco Archaological Complex

Q'enco is a mysterious site with rock carvings and ceremonial chambers. It doesn't look like much compared to the others, but the complex is believed to have been a sacred space used for rituals and ceremonies, particularly involving mummification and offerings to the gods.

 Walk up to the Giant Christ

Right next to Saqsayhuaman is a large white Jesus statue that sits high above the city. It's free of charge to visit, and has some of the best views of Cusco to enjoy.

Check Out Morada de los Dioses

The Morada de los Dioses is a true hidden gem that is just right outside the center of Cusco. The mystical outdoor art installation features massive stone carvings of Andean deities, caves with healing powers, and a gift shop, cafe, and beautiful restaurant all in one.

They were doing a ton of construction when we went, so you can tell that the project is continuing to expand! This off-the-beaten-path experience perfectly blends art, culture, and spirituality for one of the most unique things to do in Cusco city.

 Enjoy the Miradores (Viewpoints)

Cusco is full of miradores, or viewpoints, that offer breathtaking panoramas of the city and its surrounding mountains. Our personal favorite is Mirador San Cristobal, which sits high above the center and has post-card worthy views over Plaza de Armas and all of its surrounding streets.

It's really easy to get great views in Cusco anywhere though! Plaza de Armas sits at the bottom, and you'll notice everything around it has stairs, so just keep climbing and you'll be able to find a ton of great miradores.

Get a Massage

With all of the intense activities around Cusco (and even just walking up and down the streets!) your muscles are going to need a bit of rest. 

Well, don't worry because there is an abundance of spas scattered around Cusco's center, and they're impossible not to come by.

You'll actually find women trying to lure you in left and right with their affordable deals. With budget-friendly prices and a variety of options, it’s the perfect way to unwind and recharge.

 Learn How to Cook Like a Peruvian

One of the top things to do in Cusco for the foodies out there is to take a local cooking class.

Head to a local market to learn about the cuisine of Peru, and learn how to make a variety of delicious dishes and cocktails that are typical to the region.

It's a fun and interactive way to immerse yourself in the rich culture of Peru, and will leave you with a full stomach to energize you for all of the other exciting activities in and around the city.

Visiting Huayra Park is one of the most exciting things to do in Cusco city without having to travel too far from the center.

 Play Around at Bosque de los ENTS

Bosque de los Ents is a magical forest park featuring wooden sculptures inspired by fantasy and folklore. It kind of reminds us of the Hobbit village in Guatemala, but with a twist of adventure.

Other than fun photo ops and their intricate sculptures, you can find adventurous activities like a suspension bridge, zip lining, and biking along a high wire.

Parque de los ENTS is just 40 minutes outside the city center, and it’s a fun place to explore travelers of all ages.

Pump Up Your Adrenaline at El Vuelo del Halcon

Right next to Parque de los ENTS is another similar park that includes cute photo opportunities and some adventure activities.

Bike along a high wire, zip line, or take one of the extreme swings. There is even one that has a hamster wheel attached that spins while you swing for the ultimate adeventure!

You can pay and entrance to experience the miradores, you can choose an activity or two to participate in, or you can do a bunclde package that includes 2 of the activities for just 150 soles/person.

Enjoy Beer Olympics at Loki

Looking for a lively social scene? Head to Loki Hostel for their famous Beer Olympics each Sunday. It’s a fun and friendly competition with drinking games, music, and a party atmosphere perfect for meeting fellow travelers.
