📍 Where is Viñales in Cuba?

Viñales is located in the Pinar del Río province in western Cuba, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) west of Havana. The town lies in the heart of Viñales Valley, surrounded by the Sierra de los Órganos mountains, making it an accessible and picturesque escape from the bustling capital city.

Viñales, Cuba Travel Guide: Getting There

Now that you know where Viñales is, let's get to the next part of our Viñales, Cuba travel guide - the different options for how to get to Viñales.

✈️ What is the Closest Airport to Viñales?

Viñales unfortunately does not have its own airport. The closest main airport to Viñales is Havana, which is 185 km away, and typically a 3-hour drive.

➡️ How to Get from Havana to Viñales

There are four options for visiting Viñales from Havana:

  • Rent a car and drive
  • Take the Viazul bus
  • Join a colectivo
  • Hire a private driver

🚗 Renting a Car in Havana

Renting a car is not nearly as easy or cheap as it is in other countries around the world. There are only a few companies that offer rentals, and typically they only offer rentals if you are trying to get one for at least 3 days.

Not only that, but renting a car in Cuba is extremely expensive, with cars costing anywhere from $150-$250/day.

However, if you really prefer to rent a car for the flexibility of it and are in a group, then you can find a few sites online, or get one at the Havana airport.

Having a car gives you a lot of flexibility.

🚌 Buses from Havana to Viñales

Taking buses in Cuba is also different than most countries. There are local buses and tourist buses. The company that runs the tourist buses is Viazul, and it's the only one that foreigners are allowed to use (of course, it's about 20x-50x the price as the local bus).

Tickets are 16 euros and buses leave at 7:30 AM from Terminal de Ómnibus Nacionales (Ave. Independencia Esq 19 de Mayo).

Trips are approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes, and have 3 stops along the way.

🚐 Colectivos from Havana to Viñales

Leaving at 7:30 AM was tricky for our itinerary, and we also wanted to save time, so we decided to take a colectivo, which is pretty much a shares taxi.

Colectivos can range a bit, and require a bit of negotiation, but we found $25/person to be a decent rate.

The best way to find a colectivo is to ask your Airbnb or simply around on the streets.

🚕 Hiring a Private Driver in Havana

On the way back from Viñales, we got a contact from our host who arranged our ride back to Havana. It was just the two of us, but luckily the driver was wiling to take us for $50. Many will probably quote you more, but it's worth trying to negotiate.

Don't miss out on the incredible Piña Coladas offered, as well as the daquiris, which are truly better than anywhere else you'll find in the world.

Viñales, Cuba Travel Guide: Local Adjustments

Now you know a bit about the food and drinks in Viñales, but let's get back to an important part of our Viñales, Cuba travel guide, which is the local adjustments. These are some of the "know before you go" details, like the currency, language, and tipping culture.

🗣 What is the Language in Viñales, Cuba?

The official language in Cuba is Spanish. While there are certain people in the tourism industray that speak English, it's not super common to come by.

Speaking Spanish will also help you greatly overall to not be taken advantage of, so we recommend learning as much as you can before visiting Cuba.

💵 Currency Used in Viñales, Cuba

The currency topic is a bit complex in Cuba, as there used to be three different currencies in the country. Now there are two, but there is also a black market rate for exchanging money, and Americans cannot use credit cards.

Things such as tours and transportation are typically only accepted in USD, while restaurants and shops accept both USD and the local currency.

We actually have a full article coming up that will dive into all of the details! Subscribe to our newsletter to recieve our weekly updates on the newest info and exclusive content.

🔌 What Plugs are Used in Viñales, Cuba?

Cuba uses the same plugs as the US, which are type A. Typically, voltage is 110V/60Hz, although some hotels (usually in the bathrooms) also sometimes have 220V and rounded sockets for European plugs (plug type C).

🚰 Can You Drink the Water in Viñales, Cuba?

The water is not safe to drink in Viñales, so it's important to stick to bottled water. We recommend getting a large jug from the supermarket, and then refilling a reusable water bottle to be a more eco-friendly traveler.

💸 Is Tipping Common in Viñales, Cuba?

Tipping in Cuba is common, especially in the tourism industry. We recommend 10% of the bill while in restaurants, and it can be in their Cuban pesos or in USD.

Viñales, Cuba Travel Guide: Getting Around

Viñales is part of a large valley, and being able to explore it means that you'll need another mode of transportation (especially for reaching the beaches).

There isn't really any public transportation in Viñales, but it is easy to find drivers that you can hire for the day.

We had our host set us up for a driver each day, and of course if you like your driver you can negotiate with them for a better rate, or even find friends to join to split the cost. Prices are typically paid in USD, so make sure to have cash on you in USD or even euros!

Viñales, Cuba Travel Guide: Where to Stay

Viñales is pretty small, and has limited accommodation. (Keep in mind that online it's not as easy to book accommodation outside of Airbnb).

We stayed at an INCREDIBLE place though, and would definitely love to share our experience, because it was certainly the best one in Cuba.

While it may not look like anything special, it was clean and cool, which can be hard to find sometimes in Cuba. It was just a few minutes walking from the main road, and had everything we needed. The host greeted us with juice and muffins, and helped us throughout our entire stay, making it such a lovely stay.

Another great option is Hotel Horizontes los Jazmines, which is large hotel outside of Viñales that has a pool and stunning views. As an American, it's not as wise to stay here because it is government-run, but we did enjoy visiting here for its beautiful views and great amenities.

A night costs typically 11,280 pesos ($94 USD), and you can purchase a room on this site.

Viñales, Cuba Travel Guide: Safety

Arriving in Viñales was a massive relief coming from chaotic Havana. This was proabably the part of Cuba we felt safest, and the vibe was so much better than the rest.

The people were happy, the streets were clean, and tourism was higher than any other place we had been.

If you're looking to meet fun people, eat well, and feel safe, then Viñales truly is the place to be.

☀️ Weather in Viñales

Viñales experiences tropical Caribbean weather, with hot temperatures year-round. Cuba has two main seasons, which are the dry season (winter in the northern hemishpere), and the rainy season (June-October).

In the summer it is excessively hot, humid, and has frequent storms, while during the dry season you'll experience pleasantly days perfect for the beach, and perfectly cool nights.

Summers are very stormy in Cuba.

📆 The Best Time to Visit Viñales

The best time to visit Viñales is after the rainy season. This is when the valley is at its greenest, but you'll be able to enjoy sunny days and enjoyable temperatures without an insane amount of humidity or storms.

We'd recommend the months of November, December, and January, but February-April are also great months for ideal temperatures before the rainy season.
