Cobh is a small coastal town in southern Ireland that is a popular cruise port. Known from 1849 until 1920 as Queenstown, Cobh is known for its early Irish emigration, as well as being the last port that the famous Titanic sailed from. Here are ten great things to do in Cobh, Ireland.


Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #1: Check Out the Titanic Experience & Memorial Garden

The number one most important historical part of Cobh, is that is was the last port of call for the Titanic before she made her way to unsuccessfully cross the Atlantic.


Learn about the history about this impressive ship, and what life was like onboard. Hear about what it was like for passengers, crew, and those involved in the rescue of those who made it. The Titanic museum is a truly interesting and emotional experience, and definitely one of the highlights of Cobh.

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #2: Learn About Irish History at the Cobh Heritage Centre

The Cobh Heritage Centre is dedicated to the “Queenstown Story”. This story of Irish Emigration is portrayed with an exhibition that is situated in Cobh’s beautifully restored Victorian railway station. Learn about the first emigrants that moved over to the US, and what life was like leaving Ireland for a new life overseas,


Tickets are €11 for adults, €9 for students and seniors, €6 for children, and €28 for a family ticket including 2 adults and up to 4 children. They are open from 10:00 am-5:00 pm Tuesday to Sunday, and are closed on Mondays.

The Cathedral Church of St. Colman, usually known as Cobh Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral church of the Diocese of Cloyne. Its tower contains a carillon which, with 49 bells, is one of the largest in Europe. St. Colman has exquisite architecture, and a great overlook of the Cobh harbor, making it a must see while in town,

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #4: Deck of Cards

Our favorite Instagram-worthy spot is the 'deck of cards', which is a row of colorful houses, and has St. Colman's Cathedral as a backdrop. It is just a few minutes walking distance from the port, and has a nice green area to sit and relax with that picture perfect view.

This South Eastern city is the second largest in the country. Just a 24 minute train ride away, this makes for the perfect place to go to experience a more lively and cosmopolitan area.

Cork itself is nice to walk around for a few hours, and to check out the old English market. If you go at night make sure to enjoy the fun nightlife, and stop at a pub for some live irish music.


The train to get to Cork is located right outside the port area of Cobh, and runs every hour on the half hour. The train back to Cobh runs every hour on the hour.

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #6: Take a Trip to Blarney Castle & Gardens

This is where the famous Blarney stone is located. Legend has it, that if you kiss the stone, you will be given the gift of eloquence. This isn't the only reason to visit though, as the area has a beautiful castles, houses, and gardens to check out as well. 


Entrance rates are normally €18 for adults, €13 for students & seniors, and €8 for children 8-16. Children can enter free of charge, and you can get slightly reduced rates on the other tickets if you book online here.

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #7: Check Out Fort Mitchell

Head to Spike Island to check out this 18th century fort. The 103 acre island was originally a site for holding prisoners. In the height of the Great Famine in 1847 Spike Island became a full scale prison. The fort was built to defend the coastal town of Cobh, and remains as a great place to learn about the history of Cobh.

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #8: Black Rock Castle Observatory

Located just 2 km outside of Cork, is a beautiful castle that dates back to 1582. Black Rock Castle was originally developed as a coastal defence fortification to protect the upper Cork Harbour and port. The castle now now houses an observatory, visitor center and restaurant.


In order to get here from Cobh, just grab a taxi or Uber. For a slightly cheaper way, you can take the train to Cork and then get a bus or taxi from there and arrive in just a few minutes.

Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #9: Enjoy the Wildlife at Fota Island

Head to Fota Island to discover Ireland's only wildlife park. After visiting the Fota Island Wildlife Park, you can also check out the historical Fota House and gardens and golf course owned by the Fota Island Golf Club and Resort. The island is just 11 kilometers by road, and a 15 minute drive from the port of Cobh.


Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland #10: Take a Trip to Kinsale

Spending some time in the area, or want to see something more than just the town of Cobh? Head to Kinsale, which is located about 45 minutes from town. You can rent a car from the port area, and venture out to see this colorful fishing village, along with its two 17th century fortresses.

Not only is it a great place to check out, but the road is pretty scenic as well, and there are some other nice coastal towns nearby!
