Things to See and Do in Havana: a Brief Intro

Before diving into all of the best things to do and see in Havana, we want to go over a bit about what you should expect while visiting, so you aren't as shocked as we were.

🤩 Why Do Tourists Visit Havana?

Tourists typically visit Havana for its old school charm, live music, and beautiful architecture. When people think of Havana they imagine colorful buildings, lively streets, and classic cars everywhere.

While Havana certainly has its charm, we want to actually explain what we felt when we first got to Havana, and how we felt when we left.

Havana is known for its classic cars.

🇨🇺 What is Havana, Cuba Like?

When we got to Havana, we were a bit frustrated and sad. The vibrant buildings were crumbling, there were streets full of trash, and locals seemed like they were in complete despair. The classic cars? They're almost all reserved for tourist rides, and the locals' cars are not in great shape.

It wasn't exactly how we imagined it to be. You could tell the city used to be alive, but that people were losing hope, and you could feel it in the air.

After speaking with locals, taking a tour, and spending some days in different areas of Havana, we grew to love it a little more.

🛍 Shop the Artisan Markets

One of the things we loved about Cuba is that there are so many talented artisans! From crochet dresses and handmade earrings to local artwork, you can really find some amazing things in the markets of Havana. It's also a fantastic way to support the locals!

The biggest one is located near the port, and is a massive covered market, but you can also find some other smaller ones throughout the city. Add it to your list of things to do in Havana if you like local crafts and helping local communities.

This hotel has one of the best rooftop bars in the city, with beautiful panoramas of El Morro and the sea. Even if you're not staying there, you can head up and grab a drink to enjoy one of the best views in town.

🍹 Try a Daiquiri at El Floridita

While we typically aren't ones to fall into tourist traps, we couldn't help but visit this iconic bar that used to be frequented by Ernest Hemingway. This bar is packed with history and is super trendy - getting a daiquiri here is an absolute must!

🕺 Have a Night Out at the Cuban Art Factory

This has to be one of our favorite things to see and do in Havana! Fábrica de Arte Cubano is part art gallery, part nightclub, and so incredibly unique. It’s one of the best nightlife experiences in Havana, which has various rooms to enjoy, with different exhibitions and music styles - we even got to experience a salsa class!

The Cuban Art Factory is outside the center, so you can get there by getting the local "bus" (a small shared van really) or by taxi.

🚗 Take a Day Trip

So many people just stay in Havana, but some of our favorite places were actually located outside the capital!

Our personal favorite is Viñales, a vibrant valley home to the country's cigar production. Other ones you can check out are Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Varadero, all of which we have guides for!
