Vilnius is famous for being the capital of Lithuania, and one of the most popular cities in the Baltics. It's also known for being one of the largest and most well-preserved old towns in Europe, which is what made it an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
Is Vilnius a Fun City?
Most people don't flee to the Baltics for a wild weekend, but there are actually a ton of fun things to do in Vilnius, and it makes a great destination for cool nightlife, unique outdoor adventures, and trendy dining.
Where is Vilnius Located?
Vilnius is Lithuania's capital, and is located in the south east of the country. It's one of the most popular cities in the Baltic region, and although it's the only capital not on the coast, it is still well-connected to the other big cities in this region of north eastern Europe.

- Take the train to Vilnius - this is the fastest, and most comfortable option.
- Drive to Vilnius - the surrounding countries are also in Schengen zone making it even easier to visit via land borders!

Do I Need a Visa to Visit Vilnius?
Lithuania is part of the Schengen Area, so travelers from most EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, and many others do not have to get a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least three months past your planned departure date.
If you are visiting Lithuania from one of the other countries of the Schengen zone, you won't have to go through immigration or customs either.

We had no problem communicating with people in Vilnius - many people were able to speak English, and it's very common to find signs and menus in English, Russian, and sometimes other languages as well.
What is the Currency in Lithuania?
The currency in Lithuania is the euro. Most establishments accept credit card, although we'd recommend having some cash for street vendors and tipping.
What Plug Adapter Do I Need for Lithuania?
Lithuania use the same plug types as the rest of Europe, which are types C & F. The standard voltage in Vilnius is 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Can I Drink Tap Water in Vilnius?
Water is perfectly fine to drink in Vilnius, and although bottled water is more common in restaurants, it's also perfectly fine to ask for tap water when you're dining out.
Do People Tip in Vilnius?
Tipping is becoming more common in Vilnius, particularly in the hospitality industry. While people don't typically tip for taxis or services, it's nice to give a tip to housekeeping or bell boys in hotels, and to tip in restaurants. We recommend around 10-15%, and if it's a small cafe you can always leave something small in the tip jar.

This is our favorite part of our Vilnius travel guide, because this city has some really fun and cute cafes! While the cuisine didn't necessarily blow us away, we did enjoy the beautifully decorated coffee shops and trendy bars dotted around the city.
Here are some places we recommend going to:
- Etno Dvaras: an excellent Medieval-style restaurant with local food
- Augustas & Barbora Love: a cafe that has over-the-top decor
- Poniu Laime: an adorable French bakery
- Farmer and the Ocean: a cute farm to table restaurant
- Piano Man Bar: a fun pub-style bar with good food and great vibes
- Alaus Biblioteka: a library themed bar with great light bites
- Prie Angelo: a cute restaurant in Uzupis with Lithuanian food
- Paupio Turgus: a cool food market

Vilnius Travel Guide: Getting Around
Vilnius is really easy to get around! The old town and Uzupis are both really great to explore on foot, and the rest of the city and its surroundings can also easily be reached via public transportation, ride-share apps, and by hopping on a bike, scooter, or in a short-term car rental.
Here are all of the different options for how to get around Vilnius, Lithuania:
- Walking (within neighborhoods)
- Taking public transportation (buses and trolleybuses)
- Ordering taxis (with Uber, Bolt, or E-taxi)
- Using rideshare apps (Bolt or Uber)
- Biking (daily rentals or bike tours are available.)
- Using a scooter (via the Bolt app)
- Rent a car (you can also do short-term car sharing for the minute or hour!)

What Part of Vilnius to Stay in
If it's your first time visiting Vilnius, we'd definitely recommend staying in the old town. This way, you're in walking distance of all of the top things to do in Vilnius. Another great option is Naujamiestis, as it is a trendy "hipster" area.
We recommend staying in the Old Town if it's your first visit to Vilnius.
Hotel Recommendations in Vilnius
Here are some recommended stays we found for you, depending on what type of budget you have.
Luxury Stays in Vilnius
- Hotel Pacai: 5-star design hotel in a Baroque palace with beautiful views, a fitness center, spa, and restaurant.
- Stikliai Hotel - Relais & Châteaux: located right in the heart of the old town and in a historic building. It has a pool, sauna, gym, cocktail bar, and elegant rooms.
- Narutis Hotel: one of the small luxury hotels of the world, it has two restaurants, a spa, great breakfast, and excellent location.
Mid-Range Stays in Vilnius
- Grotthuss Boutique Hotel Vilnius: centrally-located but quiet, has a beautiful garden, and has a stylish restaurant and rooms.
- St Palace Hotel: modern and chic boutique hotel that offers bicycle rentals, video games, and walking tours.
- Mabre Residence: perfectly located and spacious with a beautiful garden, terrace, restaurant and bar.
Budget-Friendly Stays in Vilnius
- Gate of Dawn by Kliefs Vilnius: hostel that is located in the Old Town with virtual check-in and super-affordable prices.
- Hostel Filaretai: hostel offering both shared and private rooms just a few minutes from the old town and bus station, and it has a common area and kitchen.
- Pogo Hostel: this is the hostel we stayed at - it's simple, but it's well-located and has a washing machine.
Vilnius Travel Guide: Safety
The next part of our Vilnius travel guide is to cover a super important topic - keeping you safe while traveling!
Vilnius is generally a really safe city, but it’s always smart to stay aware of your surroundings, as petty crime can happen like pickpocketing (although it's certainly not bad like Paris or other European capital).
Is Vilnius Safe at Night?
We felt perfectly safe walking around Vilnius at night, especially in the old town. I even visited Vilnius on my own years ago, and never felt danger in any way.
Vilnius has a great Christmas market in the winter.
Is Riga Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
The first time I visited Vilnius I was a young solo female traveler and felt completely safe! I'd recommend staying in a hostel so that you can make friends, and to join tours to enjoy some of the city's great activities with them.

Weather in Vilnius
Vilnius has a temperate climate with cold, snowy winters and mild, warm summers. January is typically the coldest month with very short days, while July and August are the warmest and have very long days. Out of all of the Baltic capitals, we did find Vilnius to be a bit less cold in the winter.
What is the Best Time to Visit Vilnius?
June through August is the most popular time to visit Vilnius, thanks to warm weather and long daylight hours. If you prefer fewer crowds and festive vibes though, December is magical with its Christmas market!
We love both summer and winter to visit Vilnius. Summer is great for its unique activities, perfect temperatures, and fun festivals, while winter is when Vilnius shows that it's one of the most underrated destinations for the holiday season.
Packing For a Trip to Vilnius, Lithuania
Ready to pack your bags? Here are some things we'd recommend bringing with you on a trip to Vilnius:
- Comfortable shoes for walking around (ditch the heels!)
- Bathing suit for the nearby lakes in summer or for saunas in the winter
- Bag/ Backpack that zips (check out our list of favorite backpacks for travelers!)
- Action Camera (we use the Insta 360 X3 because you can use it with an extra long selfie stick to mimic a drone)
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Chapstick

Is Vilnius Worth Visiting?
Vilnius may not be the most conventionally appealing capital city, but if you appreciate quirky neighborhoods, trendy bars, and beautiful, old architecture, then you will definitely find Vilnius is worth visiting. A big plus is certainly that you can ride a hot balloon there - a truly unique experience for a European city!
