Meet the Bowing Deer

One of the most iconic Nara attractions is meeting the friendly deer that freely roam around Nara Park. As someone who grew up with deer around me, this is definitely shocking, as the deer are super friendly, and live peacefully amongst locals and tourists!

These sacred animals are believed to be messengers of the gods and have become a beloved symbol of the city. What makes them even more special though is their quirky habit of bowing to visitors before being fed.

You can purchase special crackers, called shika senbei, to feed them and enjoy this unforgettable experience. If you’re short on time, this is an absolute must on any Nara itinerary. The park itself has tons of deer, but you can also experience these cute animals roaming all around!

Visit the Temples

A day trip to Nara wouldn’t be complete without visiting its impressive temples, which are scattered around Nara Park.
