📍 Where is Hvar in Croatia?

Hvar is an island that is located off the Dalmatian coast, along the Adriatic Sea. It's situated between the island of Brac, and the island of Korcula. The island of Hvar in Croatia is a popular island to visit most frequently from Split, as it's just a ferry ride away.

Where is Hvar in Croatia

Hvar is a Croatian Island between Brac and Korkula.

What is the Best Way to Get to Hvar, Croatia?

Hvar is the longest island in Croatia, and is one of the most easily accessible of the islands to visit in the country.

✈️ What Airport Do You Fly Into for Hvar?

There is an airport on the island. However, it is just for recreational sports, not for commercial aircrafts. The best airport to fly into for Hvar is Split.

The only way to reach Hvar is by sea. Here are the different options for traveling to the island of Hvar in Croatia.

⛴ Traveling to Hvar in Croatia by Ferry

Visiting the island of Hvar in Croatia is most popularly done by taking the ferry. There are a couple of different ports- Hvar Town (which is the main tourist and partying area), and Stari Grad (just 20 minutes from Hvar Town).

The places that sail to Hvar are Split, Brac, Makarska, and Ancona, Italy. (Keep in mind this changes with time of year).

Sailing from Split to Hvar

Split is the most popular location that sails to Hvar.

Kapetan Luka, Jadrolinija, Adriatic Fast Ferries and TP Line are the four companies that sail to Hvar.

Jadrolinjia is the one that has the car ferry, and sails from Split to Stari Grad, with a few departures a day. Make sure to book in advance if you are traveling with a car, especially in high season.

⛵️ Traveling to Hvar in Croatia on an Excursion

Don't have enough time to spend a night or two in Hvar? No worries- because you can still see Hvar in Croatia by taking one of the many excursions from the cities of Split and Makarska.

There are both private and shared trips that you can set up, with plenty of companies to choose from lined along the piers, or online. The boats usually stop for an hour or two right in Hvar Town, so that you can see the port area and get a little taste of the island life here.

We personally think Hvar is better explored by spending at least one night, as the vibe here is really great in the evenings.

Hvar Town can be visited on a day trip on boat excursion.

Looking to visit Hvar from Makarska? Here are a couple of other options:

Entry Requirements for Croatia

Traveling through Europe can be a bit confusing, as there are different requirements for each country within the EU, as well as within the Schengen Zone. That's why we're here to clarify some things.

🛂 Visa Requirements for Croatia

In many European countries, the "90/180" rule applies for those that are not European citizens. This means that in a period of 180 days, tourists can only stay within the Schengen Area for 90 days in total.

Some countries in Europe are a part of the EU, but not part of the Schengen Zone, while some are part of the Schengen Zone but not considered a part of the EU. Some are in both, while some are in neither. This can get super confusing when trying to calculate your travels!

When we visited Croatia, it was separate from the Schengen Zone, but Croatia recently joined the EU. This means that rather than having a full 90 days in Croatia, you'll only be able to visit for the amount of days left from the Schengen Zone. This is a 90 day allowance in the last 180 days, combines from all countries in the zone.

Local Adjustments for Hvar, Croatia

While you travel there are things that you may forget about, that could be different from where you are coming from. Here are a few of the local adjustments to put into consideration while traveling to the island of Hvar in Croatia.

🗣 What Language is Spoken in Hvar?

The official language in Hvar is Croatian. However, it is a very touristic island, so it is common to hear locals speaking English. Croatians really appreciate when you try to speak even a few Croatian phrases, so we definitely suggest learning the basics.

💶 Currency: Can You Use Euros in Hvar?

The currency used in Hvar when we visited (2022) was the Kuna. However, now the official currency in Croatia is the euro.

Credit carda are accepted in many places. We do suggest carrying some cash for tips though, as well as drinks if you are going out.

🔌 What Plug Adapter Do I Need for Croatia?

Hvar uses the same plug types as the rest of Croatia and Europe, which are types C & F. The standard voltage in Croatia is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

🚰 Is Water Drinkable in Hvar?

The tap water in Hvar and all over Croatia is potable. If you go to a restaurant and ask for water though, they will automatically bring bottled water. If you don't want to overpay on drinking water in Hvar we suggest asking for tap water, and bringing a refillable water bottle to walk around with.

💸 Tipping Culture: Do You Tip in Croatia?

The tipping culture in Croatia is typically 10% of the bill. Being that Hvar is very expensive and touristy, you will notice that many people leave more than 10% (although it is not mandatory).

Hvar has stunning beaches.

Best Beaches in Hvar #1: Plaza Dubovica

In many places (Spanish speaking countries) plaza means square. However, in Croatia plaza means beach.

Plaza Dubovica is just 10 minutes outside of Hvar town, and just a few minutes from Stari Grad. Park on the side of the highway, and take the 5-10 minute walk down the hill to experience this tiny slice of paradise waiting.

Best Beaches in Hvar #2: Plaza Malo Zarace

This was our favorite of the beaches in Hvar, Croatia. It actually has two sides to it that you can enjoy, with equally beautiful turquoise waters on each. Once you park you can opt to go to the right for what seems to be a hidden bay tucked between the rocks, or you can go to the left where there are a couple of restaurants and area for swimming.

Best Beaches in Hvar #3: Beach Robinson

This is another of the beaches in Hvar, Croatia that is located just outside Hvar Town. Beach Robinson boasts crystal clear waters along a pebble beach. This secluded spot is perfect for relaxin away from the busy crowds down the road.

⛵️ Take a Boat Trip

One of the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia is to take a boat trip. There are several ones that you can choose from, and are usually full day tours that visit several caves and swimming spots.

With food and drinks included, shared boat trips in Hvar can be quite pricey, ranging easily from 80 euros upwards.

Another popular option is to charter your own boat. There are little ones that can be rented for small groups, or bigger speedboats for larger parties. This is one of the best ways to spend a day exploring all that the island of Hvar in Croatia has to offer.

There are a ton of boat trips that go from the port of Hvar Town.

Want to reserve your boat tour in advance? Here are some fun options to choose from:

🦇 Visit Grapceva Cave

While most of the caves can only be explored by boat, here is one that can be visited on foot. Grapceva Cave is located about 45 minutes from Hvar Town, and is off the side of a very rocky and narrow road.

An important thing to note is that you cannot simply visit here on your own. You can only see this cave with a tour, and it must be booked in advance.

🎉 Party Like a Celebrity

Hvar is known for its nightlife, attracting around 20,000 visitors a day in the summer! A bay filled with luxury yachts and intoxicated (mostly) British and American tourists, this is a true partier's paradise.

We suggest spending at least a full day and night to dedicate to just enjoying the parties of Hvar. Click here to learn more about the nightlife and day parties on the island of Hvar in Croatia.

🏰 Visit the Spanish Fortress

Driving or sailing into Hvar Town, the first thing you will notice is the breathtaking fortress overlooking the city. The Spanish fortress of Hvar is grand, and definitely one of the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia.

The inside of the fortress opens at 9 am, and closes at 8 pm. Tickets cost 70 for adults, and 35 kuna for children.

The fort is one of the highlights to visit in Hvar Town.

The sunrise and sunset here are both magical, although they can only really be enjoyed from outside the fortress. There are plenty of spots right outside the gates that you can enjoy beautiful views, at any time of the day.

💐 Explore the Lavender Fields

Did you know that Croatia is famous for its lavender? While influencers flock to the famous fields in the south of France, Hvar has tons of lavender waiting to be discovered. We started to see the beginning of these plants blooming, but July is the real time to see them at their highest potential.

Whether you get to see the lavender fields or not though, we definitely suggest bringing home a lavender souvenir or two.

The Best Things to Do in Hvar, Croatia: Nightlife

One of the very best things to do in Hvar, Croatia is to enjoy the party scene. When it comes to nightlife, the place to be is Hvar Town. Here are the top spots to check out for the net parties.

🍾 Carpe Diem

This is the number one spot for parties in Hvar, Croatia. The famous club is located on its own island, and has regular ferries from the port area of Hvar Town.

The Different Options For Carpe Diem

There are three different things you can experience at Carpe Diem. During the day, Carpe Diem is a lounge. Think Ibiza or Vegas Style pool club vibes.

The lounge is open from 11 am to 7 pm, and entrance is free (with extremely expensive drinks and food of course). However, the ferry to get over to the island is quite expensive (between 30-40 euros round trip).

Transform your photos

One click is all it takes to make your photos look stunning. Get our latest package of Lightroom presets, Into The Wild.

The After-Hour Beach Party at Carpe Diem

From 5 pm to 10 pm the after beach party starts, with more of a festival atmosphere than the chill lounge vibes. This is only running during the very high season. Just like the day party, it is free to enter, but you have to pay for the ferry.

The Nightclub of Carpe Diem

From 10 pm to 1 am the island actually closes. Everyone is kicked off to get ready for the night party. At 1 am the night begins again, and goes until 5 am. Tickets are 300 kuna, and include the ferry ride. Drinks inside are also very expensive, with beers starting at 50 kuna. Reservations must be made in advance in the high season!

Overall, we think that Carpe Diem wasn't so different than many other beach clubs we've been to. It is very pricey since it is known as an "exclusive party experience". However, we do think it's something you have to experience at least once while visiting the island of Hvar in Croatia.

👯‍♂️ Hula Hula

The second biggest party in Hvar is at Hula Hula, which is about a 10 minute walk from the port area of Hvar Town. Located right on the water, there is a large platform with tables, VIP seating, and a DJ playing throughout the day and night.

We found this spot to be full of young drunk people. This is a spot you'll find that it goes from chill to crazy party atmosphere within minutes. We passed by on a Friday afternoon to find it packed and at the height of intensity. Meanwhile, we went back on Sunday at the same time, and found it to be super relaxed.

The Best Things to Do in Hvar: Experiencing Local Food & Drinks

Now you know the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia for activities and nightlife. But one of the best ways to enjoy Hvar is by also indulging in the local flavors of the island.

🦞 What Food is Hvar Known For?

The local food and drinks in Hvar can be quite pricey, but are definitely high quality. Croatia is known for its seafood, as well as its truffle, and is some of our favorite Mediterranean cuisine.

Some of our go to dishes were seafood pasta, squid ink risotto, and homemade pasta with truffle.

There are very few budget friendly restaurants in Hvar, especially in Hvar Town. We suggest eating in Jelsa or Stari Grad, as they are a bit more authentic with better prices.

🍴 The Best Restaurant in Hvar (In our Opinion)

Our personal favorite was a restaurant in Stari Grad called Jurin Podrum. A couple owns this restaurant, and uses all of their own ingredients from their garden. They serve, they cook, and they clean.

The place is adorable, and has insanely good dishes. We had homemade pasta with truffle and prosciutto, as well as wild boar gnocchi in a red wine sauce. Prices were better than most around the island, and service was also incredible- a must visit while in Hvar!

👩‍🍳 The Best Things to Do in Hvar: Culinary Experiences

While the nightlife in Hvar is really fun, the island also has some great wineries to enjoy, as well as gastronomic experiences. Here are a few cool tours for the foodies and wine-lovers out there:

Experiencing the Best Things to Do in Hvar, Croatia: Getting Around the Island

Now that you know all of the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia, let's get you from one place to another!

🚗 How Do People Get Around in Hvar, Croatia?

We mentioned the car ferry before, because really the best way to get around the island is by driving. The decision of whether to get a car or not though, depends entirely on the type of trip you are trying to do.

🚶🏻‍♀️ Can You Walk Around Hvar in Croatia?

If you plan on just staying in Hvar town, you can stick to walking. However, if you'd like to see other areas of the island (which we highly suggest), then a car will definitely be the way to go.

If you want to explore the small towns and beaches off the beaten path around Hvar, you will absolutely need a car. However, if you plan on going to party and just exploring Hvar town itself, a car won't be necessary at all.

views of Hvar in Croatia
views of Hvar in Croatia
hidden beach in Hvar, best things to do in Hvar, Croatia

Renting a car allows you to truly explore the island.

We like to do a bit of both, which is why we brought our car on the ferry from Split. We drove around during the day to explore a bit, and then for partying and seeing Hvar Town, we kept our car parked and walked. Hvar town is difficult to find parking, and the center is very walkable (although it has a lot of steps!).

If you'd like to rent a car, here is a site that we often use for rentals:

Where to Stay in Hvar, Croatia

The island of Hvar in Croatia is actually pretty big. However, half the island is pretty empty, with little to see. The spot where the action happens and where all of the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia is, is all the way in the west of the island, in Hvar town.

We stayed just outside, about a 15 minute walk away from the port, and found it to be perfect. If you go a bit outside you get great views, can sleep at night, and be close enough to enjoy the city.

If you like to enjoy a bit of peace, and aren't into partying, then Stari Grad is also a  stunning place to stay. It has plenty of restaurants, and is just 20 minutes from Hvar town, right in the middle of all of the best things to see on the island of Hvar in Croatia.

Is Hvar Safe?

Croatia in general is a one of the safest and most touristic countries in the Balkans. The island of Hvar is particularly expensive, bringing very wealthy tourists to the area. So chances that something bad happen are very slim. We always felt very safe walking around at night, no matter what area we were in.

Other Things to Know About Visiting the Island of Hvar in Croatia

Now you know the best things to do on the island of Hvar, how to get there, and the best way to get around. We have a few other things to share though, so don't go anywhere!

💸 Hvar is One of the Most Expensive Parts of Croatia

We don't want to scare you away, as Hvar is truly an epic island. However, just be aware that it comes with a price tag. A simple slice of pizza can run you up to almost $9, so use your money wisely.

We budgeted a bit by making our own breakfast, having pre-drinks, and making sandwiches. We also suggest booking your accommodation well in advance, as places go quickly (especially in the summer).

☀️ Weather on the island of Hvar in Croatia

Did you know that Hvar is actually known as the sunniest island in Croatia? (Also one of the sunniest spots in Europe!) This island has on average 315 sunny days, making it perfect for a warm and tropical getaway.

The hottest months are July and August, and the coolest months are December- March.

👗 What to Wear in Hvar, Croatia

While most beach destinations call for just bathing suits and light clothes, Hvar is a bit different. This island is classy and chic. People seriously dress to impress on this island, especially at night.

The most popular outfit we saw women wearing were trendy white outfits, and men in linen shirts and nice shorts. You'll want to wear something that lets you breathe, but is also stylish.

Note: You cannot walk in the streets with your bathing suit. Make sure to cover up to avoid being fined!

📆 The Best Time to Visit Hvar in Croatia

The height of the season to visit the island of Hvar in Croatia is in July and August. This is when you'll find the biggest parties, ports filled with yachts, and celebrity style parties. July is also the best time to be able to experience the lavender fields in full bloom.

We visited in the beginning of June, which was right when the season was starting. We found it to be perfect because we were able to enjoy hot sunny days for swimming, without huge crowds. The nightlife was still a lot of fun, but not overwhelming like in July and August.

If you like a super relaxed vibe, then we would recommend you to opt for the shoulder months like May or late September/ early October.  This way you'd be able to see the island before it comes to life, but still experience pleasant temperatures.
