Local Adjustments for Delhi, India
If you're traveling to a new country, there are a lot of things that may change from where you come from such as the language, currency, or tipping culture.
As India is such a big country, these things can even change from one state to another!
Here are some of the local adjustments to keep in mind when you travel to Delhi, India.
🗣 What Language Do They Speak in Delhi?
The official language in Delhi is Hindi.
Being such a big and touristic city, it's pretty common that people also speak English who are working in restaurants, shops, or hotels. That being said, we were surprised by the number of drivers or street vendors that didn't speak any English at all!
We definitely suggest having Google Translate handy, so that you can communicate properly with people who may not have a great level of English.
💶 What is Delhi's Currency?
The currency used in Delhi is the Indian Rupee (INR). Currently (August 2024) each 1 USD is equal to about 84 INR.
It's important to note that you can only pay cash for the majority of the things to do in Delhi. For that reason, we highly suggest taking out quite a bit of cash from an ATM.
🔌 What Plugs are Used in Delhi, India?
India uses the same electrical outlets as Europe, and accommodates plug types C, D, & M. Plug type C is the one which has two round pins, plug type D is the one that has three round pins in a triangular pattern, and plug type M also has three round pins.
India operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.
🚰 Is Delhi Water Drinkable?
The water in Delhi is not drinkable. It's important to only buy bottled water, and to make sure that it is sealed, as many places simply refill used water bottles.
We suggest purchasing a large jug from the super market, and then refilling your own reusable water bottle each day.
💸 Is it Customary to Tip in India?
The tipping culture in India is typically 10%, and sometimes is even included in the bill. Make sure to look out for a service charge, and if it's not included you can leave cash on the table for the server.

The Top Things to Do in Delhi, India
Now that you know almost everything you need to know about traveling to India's capital, let's explore all of the best things to do in Delhi.
Don't have time to read the whole article and want to save it for later? Just pin it!
Take a Sunrise Boat Ride at Yamuna Ghat
If you're an early riser, then you won't want to miss out on one of our favorite things to do in Delhi.
Yamuna Ghat is an area of the Yamuna River where they have small wooden boats rowing around during sunrise. It's full of seagulls, and witnessing all of them flying around with the golden reflection of the sun is truly magical.
We paid 250 INR per person, and had 30 minutes on the boat. You'll definitely need to negotiate, so make sure to get there a bit early.
Visit Hamayun's Tomb
Hamayun's Tomb was the first tourist attraction we got to experience in Delhi, and it surely did not disappoint! We went for sunset, and the entrance ticket was 600 INR. We suggest getting there an hour before the sun sets, so you can enjoy all of the areas, since they close each one one-by-one.
Check Out Safdarjung Tomb
Our second favorite place to see in Delhi was Safdarjung Tomb. Most people recommend going at sunset as well, but we absolutely loved going for sunrise and beating the crowds. It truly is an impressive site, and is really fun to photograph.
Tickets are 300 INR each, and the site is open from sunrise to sunset.
Explore Qutub Minar
Qutub Minar is definitely one of the most incredible things to see in Delhi, and you can easily spend quite some time exploring all of the beautiful architecture. The complex is home to the Victory Tower, which is the tallest tower in India, and also has a few buildings surrounding it.
Qutub Minar is open from 7 am to 8 pm and tickets are 600 INR.
Admire Akshardham Temple
Akshardham is a beautiful temple on the east of Delhi. Not only is the temple worth seeing itself, but it has a nightly water show!
We didn't even realize just how crazy it would be. Nothing is allowed inside (no phones, no bags, etc), so you have to check your belongings at the door, and then wait in a crazy line for a ticket to enter. The last entry is at 6, and we got there at 5, with no hopes of getting in.
If you do want to visit here, make sure to show up with absolutely nothing, and also to come in the afternoon to beat the crowds before sunset. The show starts at 7:15, and there are places to eat inside the temple complex.
Go to the Lotus Temple
Another incredible temple to check out while in Delhi is the Lotus Temple, which is a Bahai house of worship shaped like a lotus flower.
The temple looks just stunning when it is lit up, so we suggest going in the afternoon and staying until they close.
We had plans to visit here until we saw the line all the way down the block to get in, and realized we wouldn't have enough time before our flight. That being said, it is definitely on the list for the next time!
Visit Jama Masjid
This was another place we unfortunately didn't end up making it inside of. It was simply stunning from the outside, but it is a very religious place and you need to be covered from head to toe to enter.
Even with my long-sleeved dress to the floor they wanted me to put on their clothing, which smelled as if 1,000 other people wore it, which deterred us from entering.
We suggest dressing properly and going early. They open the main entrance at 11, but you can enter through the side entrance before that.
Explore the Red Fort
The Red Fort is one of the most notable landmarks in Delhi, and definitely one of the top things to see in the city.
That being said, the inside is really big and spread out, and is certainly not as impressive as the outside of the fort. If you have time, you can roam around the inside, but if you don't have enough days in Delhi, we'd recommend just walking around the outside.
To better be able to appreciate the history of the fort, we definitely recommend getting a guide.
Browse the Markets
India is a shopper's dream! Full of vibrant fabrics and bold flavors, it's super fun to browse the different markets around Delhi. You could easily spend hours at each one! Here are a few of our favorite ones to check out:
- Central Market: large market with shops for clothing
- Chandni Chowk: a massive market great for clothing and street food
- Khan Market: a more upscale market
- Spice Market: Asia's largest spice market
Roam Lodhi Garden
Looking for a place to relax and enjoy a bit of greenery? If you're few days in Delhi is enough of chaos and site seeing, then this is a nice escape. It's also a few minutes walking from Khan market, so you can enjoy combining the two.
Visit the India Gate
The India gate is a war memorial in the heart of Delhi, and actually resembles the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris! With large grassy areas surrounding it, this is a great place to go and enjoy the wide open area away from the chaotic streets.
Explore the Hauz Khas Fort
The Hauz Khas Fort was definitely one of the real hidden gems we found in Delhi. We were first wondering how many days in Delhi is enough, and thought the answer was 2 until we found this place.
It just reminds you that there is so much to see in the city that a lot of people simply overlook or don't even know about!
The fort is located right next to a lake, and is a popular place for couples to go on dates. We spent about a half hour here walking around and taking photos all over.
Take a Day Trip to the Taj Mahal
If you're only visiting Delhi for a short amount of time, then you definitely won't want to miss out on experiencing the Taj Mahal! While we certainly think it's worth visiting the city of Agra for a few days, you can in fact do a day trip from Delhi to the Taj Mahal.
Here are some day trips that you can take to the Taj Mahal from Delhi:
Local Food & Drink in Delhi, India
Now that you know all of the great things to do in the city, you may have a better idea of how many days in Delhi is enough. But you'll also want to keep in mind the food scene!
We believe Delhi is a great city to really enjoy the food, so you'll certainly want to set some time apart to experience it properly.
🍛 What is Famous to Eat in Delhi?
One thing we loved about Delhi is the variety. Here you can experience all different Indian cuisines, and even restaurants from cuisines all around the world!
Here are a few foods we suggest trying while in Delhi:
- Chole Bhature: deep fried bread served with a chick pea curry
- Momos: dumplings from the north of India (our personal favorites!)
- Golgappe: deep fried and hollowed out shell with a potato and spice mix inside
- Poori Aloo: potato curry with fried bread
- Aloo Chat: fried potatoes with spices
- Masala Chai: tea with spices (what we typically call chai in the US)
💵 How Much is a Meal in Delhi?
Meals in Delhi are super affordable! You can get street food for less than 100 INR, and you can even get meals in restaurants for 200-400 INR.
🍴 Our Favorite Restaurants in Delhi
There are so many restaurants in Delhi to choose from! While only a few days in Delhi is enough to see the highlights, you could easily spend a month exploring the food scene in this massive city.
We definitely suggest doing a food tour while in Delhi, but if you don't have time, here are a few of our favorite restaurants to check out in Delhi.
Wow! Momo
This is actually a chain restaurant, and can be found all of the city! They have a ton of different types of momo to choose from, as well as noodles, and a ton of other asian-inspired dishes. Don't miss out on the peri peri momos!
Lha Kitchen
Lha Kitchen is a beautiful restaurant that features food from the north of India, Bhutan, and Nepal. It's wildly different than what you'll experience in other Indian restaurants, and truthfully was one of our favorite meals from our entire time in India!
We suggest trying the buffalo, noodles, and momos. Keep in mind the food is super spicy, so if you are sensitive to spice then make sure to inform your server.
Blue Tokai Coffee
India is certainly not known for its coffee, but if you're a westerner and need a taste of home, then Blue Tokai is the place to go! They have delicious coffee, pastries, and even egg dishes. We went to the one next to Qutub Minar, and there is also one inside Khan Market.
We suggest getting the banoffee pie cruffin!

Getting Around Delhi
There are a ton of options for getting around Delhi! As a big city, you have plenty of options for getting around.
Is it Easy to Get Around Delhi?
Getting around Delhi can either be super easy, or very stressful. This is because there is so much traffic, and the city is really big. Due to low wages and high competition, Ubers and rickshaws can either be desperate for business, but also constantly trying to rip you off.
🚗 Renting a Car or Moto in Delhi
Trying to drive in Delhi as a non-Indian is basically a death sentence. While we typically love having the freedom to drive in a new destination, Delhi is certainly not the place for it. If you are feeling particularly confident though, you can rent a car easily from the airport.
🚕 Ubers in Delhi
Delhi does have Uber, and it's certainly one of the easiest ways to get around as a foreigner since you can just order your ride and also pay right on your credit card. Out of all of the cities in India, we did find Delhi to be the least stressful using Uber.
That being said, there are a few things that absolutely drove us crazy about using Uber in India in general:
- Uber drivers ALWAYS call you. Their English is typically not great, and they usually want to know where you're going so that they can negotiate for a higher rate or cancel.
- Uber drivers sometimes won't come all the way to the pick up point, as cars have more difficulty accessing certain areas.
🛺 Tuk Tuks/ Rickshaws
You can easily flag down a tuk tuk or rickshaw. They are a great option since they are convenient, fun, and pretty quick compared to cars (they can weave in and out of traffic better).
The downside to this is you'll always have to negotiate! We suggest checking prices on Uber, and then aiming a bit lower. Rides should cost anywhere from 100-200 INR for most places in the city, and all rides must be paid in cash.
Another thing we didn't love about taking rick shaws or tuk tuks is that you'll constantly have people harassing you for money anytime you're stopped at a light or in traffic.
🚝 Taking the Metro in Delhi
The metro is certainly the most cost-efficient option for getting around, and in our opinion, the most comfortable.
The only downside to the metro is that it's not connected everywhere, so we ended up really only using it minimally.

Where to Stay in Delhi, India
For us, Delhi was the hardest place to understand where to stay. So we're hoping that this will be able to give you a few suggestions for better accommodation options in Delhi.
No matter how many days in Delhi is enough for you, we suggest booking one night if you're on a tighter budget or not familiar with a neighborhood, and then extending your stay. We ended up having to move, and it made it a lot easier since we didn't book for multiple days.
We honestly suggest splurging a bit though, as there are some incredible hotels for pretty decent prices. You can even find 5 star hotels in New Delhi for under $100!
📍 Should I Stay in Old Delhi or New Delhi?
We definitely think New Delhi is a better choice than Old Delhi, as there are more modern neighborhoods, better restaurants, and more options in terms of accommodation.
If you're not looking for a 5-star hotel and prefer a fun area to go out, we suggest the neighborhood of Hauz Khas, which is where we stayed.
🏨 Picking a Hotel in New Delhi, India
Picking a hotel is tricky in India! If you're on a budget, you can definitely still get something decent. However, it can be one giant catfish out there if you don't do proper research.
One thing to avoid is any accommodation that is OYO. These are super cheap, and look pretty fine online. The reality is that these are basically motels, and pretty much the dirtiest places you could ever stay.
You'll also want to look into reviews. However, always look at the country of where the reviewer is coming from. Our Indian friend explained that a lot of Indians that leave good reviews simply don't have a lot of experience to compare to. Only book over a 7 rating, and try to get as much feedback from those from wealthier countries.
🛏 New Delhi Hotel Suggestions
Here are a few top-notch suggestions for hotels in New Delhi:
- Ambassador: beautiful hotel next to Khan market with a spa and balconies in each room
- The LaLit: hotel with spa, outdoor pool, and 7 dining options
- The Leela Palace: an elegant hotel with a spa, rooftop pool, and panoramic views
- Oberoi: luxury hotel with indoor & outdoor pools and a spa - it also is right next to Hamayun's tomb, and a large golf course
- Haveli Dharampura: an UNESCO awarded boutique hotel which is located right by the Chandni Chowk market and the red fort
Is Delhi, India Safe?
Delhi has a population of around 33 million, and there is a very large number of people on the streets. With extreme poverty in many areas of the city, it's really important that you travel safe while in Delhi.
When we first arrived in Delhi we got a hotel that looked like it was totally fine. We arrived at the metro station and we had children pulling on our belongings. The situation was so sad, but also the entire neighborhood felt extremely uncomfortable to be in.
We then moved to another neighborhood, and it was a world of a difference! When you arrive in India, you'll be blown away by the mass contrasts you'll find. Some areas are extremely luxurious, while others are the poorest, saddest places you'll ever encounter.
🔒 How to Stay Safe in Delhi
When moving around Delhi, always make sure to watch your belongings, and carry a bag with a secure zipper on it. Refrain from wearing expensive jewelry, designer clothing, or fancy bags.
Many people may come up and beg, but it's important not to give any money or anything, as then more people will follow.
Unfortunately it is even frowned upon to offer food, as in India even those on the streets refuse food being purchased from them. The best you can do is support locals that are selling things on the streets, and to never take out too much cash in front of people.
🚶🏻♀️ Is it Safe to Walk Around Delhi at Night?
Walking around Delhi at night depends largely on the area you are staying. Indians are definitely night owls, and there is a lot of action at night in Delhi.
There are some neighborhoods where we definitely wouldn't recommend walking around at night, and some that have a lot of nightlife, and are perfectly fine to walk around. Markets and areas full of bars are typically fine to walk around, especially if you are traveling with other people.
Picking a safe neighborhood is extremely important during your stay in Delhi though, and we're s ohappy we ended up in the one that we did.

🤔 Is Delhi, India Worth Visiting?
Delhi can be really overwhelming to visit for those that haven't already traveled to a lot of similar destinations.
We think Delhi, India is certainly worth visiting for those that don't mind a bit of chaos. There are so many cool things to experience in the city, and the architecture of some places are just stunning.
🤔 How Many Days in Delhi is Enough?
There are a ton of fun things to do in Delhi, and you could easily spend several days visiting. Deciding on how many days in Delhi is enough is certainly dependent on what kind of traveler you are, and how much you want to see.
We believe 3 days is the perfect amount of time to experience the highlights, and if you like a bit of slower travel, or want to seek out some hidden gems 5 days is great.
Keep in mind that there is a ton of traffic in India, and while it may seem you can combine a ton of things to do in Delhi in each day, the reality is that things take a lot longer than expected.
