Kolmanskop, Namibia: a Brief Intro

Kolmanskop has such a unique history, and before going into the details of visiting today, we're going to share some fun facts about this hauntingly beautiful ghost town.

🚶🏻‍♀️ Why is Kolmanskop, Namibia Abandoned?

Kolmanskop, Namibia, was abandoned in the 1950s after diamond resources had been depleted and miners moved to richer deposits elsewhere. Harsh desert conditions quickly took over the once-thriving town, burying much of it in sand.

💎 Are There Still Diamonds in Kolmanskop?

While some diamonds may still be buried in the area, mining is no longer active in Kolmanskop. The region remains under strict control, with access to surrounding diamond zones restricted.

💯 How Old is Kolmanskop?

🤔 Can You Visit Kolmanskop?

Kolmanskop is open to visitors as a ghost town, but does have restricted times for visiting. It is now a touristic site, and the town can be visited, but the mining area itself is prohibited for entry.

Kolmanskop is located in the Namib Desert of southern Namibia, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the coastal town of Lüderitz.

How to Get to Kolmanskop, Namibia

Now that you know a little bit about Kolmanskop, Namibia, and where it's located, let's look at the different options for getting there.

🚗 How Do I Go to Kolmanskop?

To get to Kolmanskop, you’ll first need to travel to Lüderitz, which is the nearest town.

Lüderitz has a small airport with limited domestic flights, or you can drive from Windhoek, which takes about 8-10 hours. From Lüderitz, Kolmanskop is just a 10 km (6-mile) drive along the B4 road.

We rented a car from Johannesburg for a 7-week road trip around Southern Africa, and can tell you it was definitely a massive help in Namibia. The road to Kolmanskop is perfectly paved and easy to get to (we do recommend a 4x4 though for other areas of the country!).

🚐 How to Get to Kolmanskop with Public Transport

There are no direct public buses to Lüderitz, as Namibia’s public transport system is really limited, especially in remote areas. However, you can take a long-distance bus from Windhoek to Keetmanshoop (using Intercape), then hire a taxi or rent a car for the remaining 335 km (208 miles) to Lüderitz.

Alternatively, you can join one of the multi-day tours from Windhoek that includes Kolmanskop as a stop. (These are typically the longer itineraries, and can be found on local tour operator sites).
