What to Wear When Traveling: How to Dress for Different Cultures & Destinations
Figuring out what to wear when traveling is about so much more than checking the weather forecast and throwing a few outfits into your suitcase. After visiting 100 different countries, we’ve learned that what you wear can impact your entire experience, from whether you can enter certain places to how comfortable you feel exploring a new destination.
When we first started traveling, we mostly thought about practicality. We packed for the temperature, brought comfortable shoes, and focused on making sure we had enough outfits. Over time, we realized there was another important piece: understanding the culture, atmosphere, and expectations of the places we were visiting.
The way people dress varies dramatically around the world. Some destinations are more relaxed, some are more conservative, and some have unspoken expectations that you might not know about until you arrive. Learning these differences ahead of time can help you avoid uncomfortable situations and also help you make the most of each trip.
In this guide, we’re sharing the biggest things we’ve learned about how to dress while traveling, from cultural customs and religious sites to local style, weather, and packing pieces that work across different destinations.

Our Travel Planning Recommendations
Why What You Wear Matters While Traveling
When we first started traveling, clothing was mostly about practicality. We thought about the weather, how much we could fit in our suitcase, and whether our shoes would be comfortable enough for long days exploring. Over time, we realized that what you wear while traveling can impact much more than just your comfort.
Clothing can influence the experiences you have, how locals perceive you, and even whether you’re able to enter certain places. After visiting countries across every continent, we’ve learned that every destination has its own expectations, and understanding them can make your travels much more enjoyable.

🥻 Clothing Is Part of the Culture
One of the biggest things we’ve learned is that clothing is often connected to culture, history, and daily life. What feels completely normal in one country may stand out somewhere else, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s simply a reminder that every place has its own traditions and social norms.
For example, some destinations are much more relaxed about beachwear and casual clothing, while others expect people to dress more intentionally in public spaces. Knowing these differences helps you feel more comfortable and shows respect for the place you’re visiting.
👔 Dressing Appropriately Helps You Experience More
We’ve also learned that dressing appropriately isn’t about trying to completely blend in or change who you are. It’s about being prepared so that your clothing doesn’t prevent you from experiencing something special.
There have been moments while traveling where we wished we had researched expectations beforehand, whether that meant bringing something more modest for a religious site or understanding that certain types of clothing weren’t appropriate in specific areas.
Knowing what to wear when traveling before you get there allows you to focus less on worrying about whether you’re dressed correctly and more on enjoying the incredible places you’ve traveled so far to see.

💡 Some religious sites have dress codes, while others you’ll simply feel more welcome being more modest.
Learning How to Dress While Traveling (Our Step-by-Step Guide)
Now that we’ve visited 100 different countries, we’ve developed a bit of a checklist before every trip. No matter where we’re going, we always spend some time researching a few different things, so that we know exactly what clothing and accessories to pack.
Here are the different things that we consider when choosing how to dress while traveling each time.
1. Research the Weather & Climate
The first step when figuring out what to wear when traveling is understanding the weather and climate of your destination. While many people simply check the forecast before packing, we’ve learned that weather apps don’t always tell the full story.
Over the years, we’ve realized that temperature is only one small part of understanding what a place will actually feel like. Humidity, elevation, seasons, and local weather patterns can completely change what clothing will be comfortable once you arrive.
🌤️ Don’t Rely Only on Weather Apps
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is assuming that a forecast is the full picture. A destination showing rain or thunderstorms every day does not necessarily mean your trip will be a washout.
For example, many Caribbean destinations show thunderstorms throughout the forecast, especially during certain seasons. While you may experience a quick rain shower, it doesn’t mean it will rain the entire day. Tropical weather can change quickly, with short bursts of rain followed by sunshine. Also, weather apps aren’t always spot on, and in some cases they can be extremely deceiving.
We learned this lesson ourselves when visiting Baños, Ecuador. The forecast showed temperatures around 40 degrees every day, but that was far from what we experienced. The weather was much warmer, and the conditions were completely different from what the app suggested.
This is why we recommend researching the overall climate and typical conditions instead of relying only on a daily forecast.
🥵 Consider Humidity, Seasons, & Local Conditions
Temperature alone doesn’t determine what clothing will work best. Humidity, wind, elevation, and seasonal changes can all affect how comfortable you feel while exploring.
For example, visiting the Caribbean during the summer means preparing for high humidity. Lightweight, breathable fabrics and clothing that dries quickly can make a huge difference when dealing with heat, beaches, and unexpected rain showers.
The same applies to destinations with changing elevations or unpredictable weather. A place may feel warm during the day but become much cooler in the evening, or a sunny destination may still require layers depending on where you’re exploring. And somewhere with a lot of wind won’t favor short, flowy skirts.
Doing a little extra research before your trip helps you pack clothing that works with the destination instead of fighting against the conditions when you arrive.

2. Dress for Your Activities
Once you understand the weather, the next step is thinking about what you’ll actually be doing during your trip. One of the biggest mistakes we see travelers make is packing for a destination instead of packing for their itinerary.
A country can have beaches, cities, mountains, and cultural sites all within the same trip. The clothing that works for a relaxing beach day may not be the same clothing you need for a full day of exploring, hiking, or visiting a more formal setting.
🥾 Pack for Your Experiences, Not Just Your Destination
Before every trip, we like to look at our itinerary and think about what each day will actually require. Will we be walking 20,000 steps through a city? Hiking through nature? Spending time on the water? Visiting places where we need to dress a little more intentionally?
Thinking this way helps you avoid packing things you never wear while making sure you have what you need for the experiences you’re most excited about.
For example, a trip to Switzerland may include beautiful cities, scenic train rides, and incredible hikes. Comfortable walking shoes and layers might be essential for exploring mountain trails, while a different outfit may be better suited for an evening in a town or a nice restaurant.
🩳 Comfortable Clothing Can Make or Break Your Trip
One thing we’ve learned after years of traveling is that the most stylish outfit in your suitcase means nothing if you’re uncomfortable wearing it all day.
Shoes are one of the biggest examples of this. Exploring a new city often means hours of walking, and the wrong footwear can completely ruin your day. The same goes for outdoor adventures, where having the right clothing can determine whether you enjoy the activity or spend the entire time wishing you had prepared differently.
The best travel clothing allows you to fully experience a destination. When you pack with your activities in mind, you’re not just bringing outfits. You’re preparing yourself to say yes to more adventures.
3. Consider the Destination’s Atmosphere & Local Style
Beyond the weather and activities, another important part of figuring out what to wear when traveling is understanding the atmosphere of the destination itself. Every place has its own style, and paying attention to how locals dress can help you feel more comfortable while exploring.
This doesn’t mean you need to completely change your wardrobe or try to “dress like a local.” It’s simply about understanding the environment you’re entering and recognizing that everyday clothing expectations can vary greatly around the world.
We in particular like to match our outfits to the environment to enhance our photography. So we’ll actually look at pictures of a place to see what the vibe is, and what colors will complement the background or pop against it.

👗 Everyday Style Can Be Very Different Around the World
One of the biggest differences we’ve noticed while traveling is that people’s everyday clothing choices often reflect the culture around them.
Growing up in the US, I’m used to a much more casual style, especially when it comes to casual activities like running to the grocery store. Sneakers, comfortable clothing, and practical outfits are completely normal for everyday life, and I wouldn’t even bat an eye seeing someone wear pajamas to the supermarket. When traveling through most of Europe, however, we noticed that people tend to put much more thought into their everyday appearance, even for simple activities like going to a cafe, walking around the city, or running errands.
Neither approach is better than the other. They’re simply different expressions of culture. While at home you might be comfy going to the grocery store in pajamas, you probably wouldn’t want to do that in Europe, where it’s highly frowned upon.
🎒 Pay Attention Before You Pack
One of the easiest ways to understand the style of a destination is by looking at photos from locals, not just tourist attractions. This can give you a better idea of what people actually wear in everyday life.
We’ve found that this small bit of research helps us pack pieces that feel more appropriate for the destination while still keeping our own personal style. It also helps avoid those moments where you arrive somewhere and realize your wardrobe doesn’t quite match the environment.
The goal isn’t to blend in perfectly or pretend to be someone else. It’s simply to be aware, respectful, and comfortable while experiencing a new place.

💡 We always dress up more in Europe, even if it’s casual sightseeing or running errands.
4. Understand Religious & Cultural Dress Codes
One of the most important things to research when deciding what to wear when traveling is whether the places you plan to visit have specific dress expectations. Around the world, many of the most beautiful and meaningful landmarks are also religious or culturally significant sites, and dressing appropriately is part of showing respect, and oftentimes essential for entry.
Over the years, we’ve learned that these expectations are not about making visitors feel unwelcome. They are about recognizing that some places hold deep importance for the communities that call them home.
⛪️ Research Requirements Before Visiting Religious Sites
Many churches, temples, mosques, and other sacred spaces have guidelines for visitors. Depending on the destination, this may include covering shoulders or knees, removing shoes, wearing a head covering, or avoiding certain types of clothing.
This is something that can easily catch travelers off guard, especially when a religious site is also a major tourist attraction. A beautiful temple, historic church, or famous mosque may look like a sightseeing stop, but it is still a meaningful place of worship for many people.
Before visiting these locations, we recommend checking the dress expectations ahead of time and bringing versatile pieces that can help you adapt. A lightweight scarf, cardigan, or extra layer can be incredibly useful while traveling.

5. Pack Versatile Pieces That Adapt
After years of traveling, one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that the best travel wardrobe isn’t necessarily the biggest one. It’s the one that gives you the most flexibility.
When figuring out what to wear when traveling, we always try to pack pieces that can work in multiple situations. The goal isn’t to bring a different outfit for every possible scenario, but to have clothing that can adapt as your plans change. It’s okay to have just a few pieces of jewelry, or wear the same shoes, and you won’t die if you wear the same bathing suit twice.
👕 Choose Pieces That Work in Different Settings
The best travel clothing can transition between different experiences. A lightweight layer can help you enter a religious site, protect you from changing temperatures, or make a casual outfit feel more appropriate for dinner.
We also love pieces that can work for multiple parts of a trip. Comfortable shoes that are good for walking but still suitable for restaurants, breathable clothing that works in warm climates, and outfits that can easily be dressed up or down can save valuable space in your luggage.
This is especially helpful when you’re traveling through different regions in one trip. Having adaptable clothing means you’re prepared without needing to overpack.
🥳 Leave Room for Unexpected Experiences
One thing we’ve learned from traveling is that the best moments are often the ones you didn’t plan for. You may end up at a beautiful restaurant after a day of sightseeing, discover a place that requires more modest clothing, or decide to join an activity you didn’t originally have on your itinerary.
Packing versatile pieces gives you the freedom to say yes to those opportunities without worrying that you’re dressed completely wrong for the situation.
The goal isn’t to have a perfect travel wardrobe. It’s to have clothing that helps you feel comfortable, confident, and ready for whatever your trip brings.

💡 Even in destinations without beaches or that are cold we bring bathing suits for saunas, hot springs, and other unexpected places.
⭐️ Bonus: Pay Attention to When You Wear Certain Things
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned about what to wear when traveling is that packing the right clothing is only half the process. The other half is understanding when and where certain outfits are appropriate.
Many travelers think about whether they can wear something, but not necessarily where they should wear it. Clothing expectations can change dramatically between a beach, a historic town, a restaurant, or a religious site, even if those places are only a few minutes apart.
👙 Beach Culture Can Vary Dramatically Around the World
Some of the biggest differences we’ve noticed while traveling are related to beach culture. In certain parts of Europe, for example, topless sunbathing is much more common and generally accepted at many beaches. In other destinations, this would be considered inappropriate or surprising.
The same applies to swimwear styles. Thongs and more revealing beachwear may be completely normal in some places but considered too revealing in others. Understanding these differences can be especially helpful if you’re traveling with children, visiting destinations with different cultural expectations, or simply want to avoid feeling uncomfortable when you arrive.
Neither approach is right or wrong. These differences are simply part of learning how different cultures view clothing, privacy, and public spaces.

🏖️ Know When Beachwear Should Stay at the Beach
This is something we learned ourselves during a visit to Hvar, Croatia. Hvar is famous as a beach and party destination, so it’s easy to assume that swimwear is acceptable everywhere. However, walking around the historic old town in just a swimsuit is not considered appropriate and can even result in fines.
A swimsuit on the beach is completely different from a swimsuit while walking through a historic town, shopping area, or restaurant. These small differences can help you enjoy a destination while respecting the communities that call it home, and also prevent you from getting in trouble.
The more we travel, the more we realize that dressing appropriately isn’t about following a strict set of rules. It’s about being aware of your surroundings, understanding local expectations, and remembering that every destination has its own way of doing things.
⭐️ If you’re planning to visit religious sites around the world, we recommend researching the specific customs of each destination before arriving.
Final Thoughts on What to Wear When Traveling
Figuring out what to wear when traveling is about so much more than putting together outfits. After visiting every continent, we’ve learned that clothing can affect how comfortable you feel, what experiences you can have, and how respectfully you interact with the places you visit.
When we first started traveling, we mostly thought about packing for the weather and making sure we had enough clothes. Over time, we realized that the best travel wardrobe is one that helps you adapt. It prepares you for unexpected experiences, different cultures, changing conditions, and everything in between.
The goal isn’t to completely change your style or pack the perfect suitcase. It’s to be open, do a little research before you go, and understand the destination you’re stepping into.
⭐️ Our Best Tips for Choosing What to Wear While Traveling
Before every trip, we recommend keeping these things in mind:
- Research the climate, not just the forecast: Weather apps don’t always tell the full story. Look into humidity, seasons, elevation, and typical conditions.
- Pack for your itinerary: Think about what you’ll actually be doing, whether that’s hiking, exploring cities, relaxing on beaches, or visiting cultural sites.
- Look at how locals dress: Understanding the atmosphere of a destination can help you feel more comfortable and prepared without needing to completely change your personal style.
- Bring versatile pieces: Layers, comfortable shoes, and adaptable clothing can help you handle unexpected plans and different settings.
- Research cultural expectations: Religious sites, historic landmarks, and certain communities may have specific dress customs that are important to understand beforehand.
- Pay attention to context: Something that is perfectly acceptable in one setting may not be appropriate in another. Knowing when and where to wear certain things can make your experience much smoother.
At the end of the day, dressing appropriately while traveling isn’t about trying to fit into every culture perfectly. It’s about showing respect, staying comfortable, and being open to the differences that make each destination unique.
