🇸🇮 If You Dream of Switzerland, Visit Slovenia Instead
Switzerland has become synonymous with postcard-perfect mountain scenery. Travelers flock there for dramatic alpine peaks, crystal-clear lakes, charming villages, and scenic train rides, but all of that beauty comes with a hefty price tag.
If what you really love about Switzerland is its landscapes, Slovenia is one of the best destination dupes you can find. Between Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the Julian Alps, and Triglav National Park, you’ll find turquoise lakes, alpine villages, and incredible hiking that feel remarkably similar to parts of Switzerland.
We were honestly surprised by just how many moments reminded us of the Swiss Alps, but with fewer crowds and significantly lower costs. Not only that, but Slovenia is so much more accessible – you can easily experience stunning landscapes without the long treks or expensive cable car rides by driving right up to them!
🇰🇬 Love Banff? Consider Kyrgyzstan
Banff is famous for its unreal blue lakes, rugged mountain scenery, and world-class hiking. It’s a bucket-list destination for outdoor lovers, but it’s also one of the busiest and most expensive places to visit in Canada during the summer.
Kyrgyzstan offers many of the same things that make Banff so special. Think glacier-fed lakes, towering peaks, horseback riding, multi-day treks, and remote alpine landscapes that feel completely untouched. If hiking to vibrant turquoise lakes is at the top of your bucket list, Kyrgyzstan definitely delivers one of the most rewarding mountain experiences you’ll ever have.
🇦🇷 Instead of Alaska, Explore Patagonia
Alaska is known for its glaciers, wildlife, dramatic mountains, and endless wilderness. But honestly? Having visited there after exploring all of Argentinian Patagonia, I felt a bit unimpressed with Alaska.
Patagonia offers that same sense of adventure across southern Argentina and Chile – massive glaciers, jagged mountain peaks, turquoise lakes, and some of the world’s most spectacular hiking trails. The difference? Patagonia feels more authentic, while Alaskan cities feel like you’ve been dropped in a tourist trap. Patagonia is a bit pricey, but not nearly as expensive as Alaska.
Alaska is hard to explore, and many destinations require pricey tours with big groups, or extortionately expensive car rentals. Patagonia though? You can much more easily rent a vehicle and explore on your own, at your own pace. I’d take exploring Patagonia over Alaska any day – and I’d highly recommend you do the same!
🌋 Volcanic Island Destination Dupes
Volcanic islands are some of the most dramatic places on Earth. If you’re looking for waterfalls, crater lakes, rugged coastlines, and epic road trips, these destination dupes deserve a spot on your list.
🇵🇹 Love Iceland? Visit Madeira
Iceland’s waterfalls, hot springs, lava fields, dramatic cliffs, and scenic drives have made it one of Europe’s most iconic destinations. We absolutely LOVE Iceland, but there’s no denying it can burn a whole through your pockets.
Madeira captures many of the same landscapes, but in a bit more of a tropical way. The island is packed with towering sea cliffs, incredible viewpoints, waterfalls, and some of the most scenic hiking trails we’ve ever experienced. If you love exploring by car and spending your days outdoors, doing a road trip in Madeira is an absolute must.
Another plus? Madeira has excellent food, cute towns, and beaches you can actually enjoy on a summer day. It also has some awesome nightlife, giving yet another reason to add it to your bucket list.
🇵🇹 Instead of Hawaii, Explore the Azores
Hawaii is famous for lush volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and outdoor adventure.
The Azores offer many of those same experiences across nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. From crater lakes and geothermal hot springs to whale watching and dramatic coastal cliffs, the Azores are perfect for travelers looking for adventure without Hawaii’s price tag.
If you live in Europe or the east coast of the US, then the Azores are exponentially cheaper and easier to get to – making it a no brainer! Hawaiians are also a bit fed up with the amount of the tourists they get. So let’s give them a break, and enjoy the warm welcome of some islands that could use a little more tourism.
🏖️ Beach & Coastal Destination Dupes
Some of the world’s most beautiful waters don’t have to come with luxury prices.
🇵🇦 Instead of Turks & Caicos, Visit San Blas, Panama
Turks & Caicos has become famous for its incredibly clear turquoise water and white sand beaches, but visiting can be surprisingly expensive.
If crystal-clear Caribbean water is what you’re after, the San Blas Islands in Panama are one of the best destination dupes we’ve found. This archipelago is home to hundreds of tiny islands surrounded by shallow turquoise water that honestly rivals some of the Caribbean’s most famous beaches at a fraction of the cost.
The experience is much more rustic, but if your priority is paradise, San Blas absolutely delivers.
🇲🇹 Instead of Bermuda, Visit Malta
Bermuda is famous for its crystal-clear water, coastal scenery, and laid-back island atmosphere. It has cute historic seaside towns, great beaches, and some awesome caves.
Malta offers many of those same experiences, along with centuries of history, dramatic limestone cliffs, sea caves, and some of the clearest water we’ve ever swam in. Add in charming historic cities and easy island hopping, and you’ve got an unforgettable Mediterranean getaway that often costs far less than Bermuda.
We got our flights for just 9 euros a piece from Italy, and rented a car to move around and explore (which tourists can only use scooters in Bermuda). With easier logistics, better prices, and a bigger variety of activities, we definitely think Malta is a better travel alternative.
🇦🇱 Dreaming of the Amalfi Coast? Visit the Albanian Riviera
The Amalfi Coast is famous for colorful cliffside towns, scenic coastal drives, and beautiful beaches overlooking the Mediterranean. It has scenic views, delicious food, and busy beach clubs.
The Albanian Riviera offers many of those same things while remaining one of Europe’s best-value destinations. Between charming seaside towns like Himarë and crystal-clear beaches such as Gjipe and Dhërmi, Albania completely exceeded our expectations. We were sitting. attrendy beach clubs having seafood pasta for 15 euros – meanwhile, a day like that on the Amalfi coast would cost 5 times the prices.
Albania is one of the most underrated summer destinations in Europe, and one of our absolute favorite destination dupes.
🇻🇳 Love Miami? Consider Da Nang
Miami combines city life with beautiful beaches, luxury hotels, rooftop bars, and an energetic atmosphere.
Da Nang offers a surprisingly similar balance of beach and city. Modern skyscrapers line the coastline, cafés and restaurants are everywhere, and long stretches of sand make it easy to spend the morning at the beach before heading into the city. It’s one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated coastal destinations.
The difference? Miami is one of the most expensive places on the planet, while Da Nang is one. of the most affordable! If you’re looking to enjoy a beachy city with fun nightlife, then Da Nang needs to be on your bucket list. Even with a higher flight price you’ll probably still save some money!
🐧 Wildlife Destination Dupes
Some of the world’s most memorable trips revolve around wildlife, but you don’t always need to visit the most famous destinations to have incredible encounters!
🇸🇿 Instead of Botswana, Explore Eswatini
Botswana is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, known for incredible wildlife viewing and luxury safari packages. If you’re looking for a more affordable safari experience though, don’t overlook Eswatini.
We thought Botswana was going to be our favorite – but as budget-conscious travelers, it was incredibly difficult to enjoy. On the flip side, we were genuinely surprised by how much we loved the small country of Eswatini.
We were getting up close to rhinos and doing giraffe walking safaris for $20. Meanwhile, the safaris in Botswana costed hundreds – sometimes even thousands! The people were so friendly, the food was delicious, and it was incredibly easy to get around Eswatini. It’s one of the most underrated countries on the planet, and an excellent travel alternative for some of the more expensive safari destinations.
🇵🇪 Can’t Afford the Galápagos? Visit the Ballestas Islands
The Galápagos Islands are one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations, but they’re also one of the most expensive places to visit in South America.
The Ballestas Islands, located just off the coast of Paracas, offer an incredible alternative. During a short boat trip, you’ll have the chance to see sea lions, Humboldt penguins, pelicans, cormorants, and countless other seabirds in their natural habitat.
While it’s not the Galápagos, it’s an amazing wildlife experience that costs a fraction of the price and can easily be visited as a day trip from Lima, making it much more convenient to visit as well.
🇸🇷 Instead of Manaus, Visit Suriname
Manaus is the gateway to Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest, attracting the most adventurous travelers out there. It’s not an easy destination to get to, nor is it very budget-friendly.
Suriname is a country that also has a large portion of the Amazon though, offering many of those same experiences! It’s a destination that remains almost completely off the tourist radar, and can be reached in a bit easier and cost-effective way.
River villages, dense rainforest, wildlife, and fascinating cultural diversity make it one of South America’s most underrated countries. If your goal is to experience the Amazon without the crowds, Suriname is definitely a place you’ll want to put on your bucket list.
🌆 City Destination Dupes
While cities are hard to replicate, there are some that can still live up to the hype of others. Here is one of them!
🇦🇿 Dreaming of Dubai? Put Baku on Your List
Dubai has become famous for futuristic architecture, luxury hotels, nightlife, and an ultra-modern skyline rising out of the desert.
Baku surprised us in many of the same ways. Walking along the Caspian Sea promenade with the Flame Towers towering above the city gave us a similar feel. Add in incredible modern architecture, a beautiful Old City, nearby mud volcanoes, and a thriving food scene, and Baku quickly became one of the biggest surprises of our travels.
Baku is also excellent for nightlife, and is a super affordable city. It’s close proximity to both Europe and Central Asia also makes it incredibly convenient, and just another one of the reasons to add Azerbaijan to your bucket list.
💡 Azerbaijan also has incredible landscapes across it, and felt like a destination dupe for several places across the globe!
💦 Lake Destination Dupes
If mountain lakes are your idea of paradise, you don’t have to visit Italy to experience them.
🇲🇰 Instead of Lake Como, Visit Lake Ohrid
Lake Como is famous for elegant lakeside towns, scenic boat rides, and spectacular mountain views.
Lake Ohrid, shared between North Macedonia and Albania, offers many of those same qualities with a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Historic churches, waterfront cafés, crystal-clear water, and beautiful mountain scenery make it one of the best hidden gems in Eastern Europe. It’s a place where you can slow down, enjoy incredible sunsets, and experience the charm of a lakeside escape without the luxury price tag.

🏝️ Tropical Adventure Destination Dupes
Sometimes you’re looking for a destination that has a little bit of beach, some jungle, and a whole lot of adventure.
🇸🇻 Love Costa Rica? Consider El Salvador
Costa Rica has earned its reputation for volcanoes, waterfalls, surfing, wildlife, and lush tropical landscapes. It’s become one of the most popular places to visit in Central America, but is becoming more commercialized (and expensive) each year.
El Salvador delivers many of those same experiences in a much smaller and often more affordable package. You can hike volcanoes, surf world-class waves, chase waterfalls, explore colorful towns, and drink incredible locally grown coffee, all without covering huge distances, or being surrounded by a ton of American tourists.
We love El Salvador so much, and honestly recommend it over Costa Rica any day!
