Where is Granada Spain

Granada is located in the south of Spain in Andalusia.

How to Get to Granada

Granada has a small airport in Jaen, which is 15 km south of the city. The cities that fly direct into Granada Airport include Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Mallorca, and Menorca.

If you're looking to find more flight options you can opt to fly into Malaga, which is just an hour and half away, or Sevilla, which is 2 1/2 hours away.

Flight Tip: Using Skyscanner you can out from "your city" to "Spain". This way you can see which is the cheapest airport in the area to fly. Also, you can check the calendar to see which are the cheapest dates for your destination!

Entry Requirements for Spain

Depending on where you're from, and where you're traveling from, will depend on your entry requirements. Here we are going to cover what you need to know for entering Spain (both visa and covid-wise).

Visa Requirements for Spain

There are many citizenships that can enter Spain visa-free. Travelers from the EU, SwitzerlandNorwayLiechtenstein, and Iceland can enter with zero restrictions at all, while those that don't need a Schengen visa can visit for up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

The 90/180 Rule

It's important to note that the 90 days are valid for all countries in the Schengen area. For example, if you spend 20 days in Italy (also part of the EU), you will then only be able to spend a total of 70 days in Spain within that 180 day period.

We use the Schengen visa calculator, which is super helpful for those that are planning on traveling in and out of the EU for a long period of time.

Schengen Visas

For those of you that are planning on staying longer, or those of you who are from a country that don't get visa-free access, you will need to then in fact apply for a Schengen Visa. Make sure to check the list of countries that need to get a Schengen Visa before traveling.

Covid Entry Requirements for Spain

All Covid requirements to enter Spain have now been lifted (Yay!). Masks are no longer mandatory, unless visiting medical facilities, or riding in public transportation, in which they are quite strict about wearing masks.

Local Adjustments for Granada, Spain

Whenever traveling somewhere new, there are things that you might forget which could be different from where you are coming from. Here are a few of the local adjustments to keep in mind while traveling to Granada in Spain.

What Language Do They Speak in Granada, Spain?

The official language in Spain is Spanish. Just like there is a difference between English is the US and English in the UK, the same goes for Spain and other Spanish speaking countries.

Something to note about the Spanish in Spain is that there are some different pronunciations. The C and Z are pronounced with a "th" sound, which can be particularly confusing for those that learn Spanish from Latin America. Another thing to note is that in Granada and Andalusia in general, people tend to speak very fast, and also cut the ends of their words, which can make it a tad more difficult to understand.

Spanish people can be quite proud, and always prefer if you at least attempt to speak Spanish to them. We suggest learning some of the basics so that you can better communicate with the locals.

What Currency is Used in Granada, Spain?

The currency used in Spain is the same as most of Europe, which is the euro. Most places accept credit card, so you won't need to have much cash on you, unless you are taking the bus or want to buy from a street vendor.

What Plugs are Used in Granada?

Spain use the same plug types as the rest of Europe, which are types C, E, & F. The standard voltage in Spain is 220V and the standard frequency is 50Hz. If you are traveling from the US it is important to note that you will not only need an adapter, but an energy converter. This way, your electronics won't get burnt out.

Is it Safe to Drink Water in Andalucia?

When you go to restaurants it is rare that you will receive tap water. This is more of a custom throughout many European countries, and doesn't mean the water isn't potable. The water throughout all of mainland Spain is perfectly safe to drink actually. We suggest carrying a refillable water around Granada, as the city requires a bit of walking and is very hilly in certain parts.

Do You Tip at Restaurants in Granada?

The tipping culture in the country of Spain is pretty much inexistent. If you are traveling around the country it is not super common to tip, unless it is a very nice restaurant, or excellent service, in which people will leave one or two euros.

Things to Do in Granada #1: Visit the Alhambra

The number one on our list of things to do in Granada is to visit the famous Alhambra. No visit to this city can be done without experiencing this marvelous highlight.

The Alhambra can actually be seen from most places in the city, as it sits high on the hill overlooking Granada. It's known for its stunning gardens and Arabic looking architecture around the palace and fortress.

It's important to know that you MUST buy tickets in advance, as they sell out days before. The general admission is 14 euros, but there are a ton of different ticket options that you can check out.

Things to Do in Granada #2: Go Bar Hopping

Have you ever heard of tapas? They're small plates of food that come with complimentary when you order a drink at a bar or restaurant.

While tapas can be found all throughout Spain, there is literally no one that does it better than Granada! While many other cities will give a small plate of olives or nuts, the bars and restaurants in Granada give actually plates of food! The bad part about this? It just makes you want to drink all day every day (hey- we won't judge. This is exactly what we did).

Going from bar to bar and trying the local tapas is seriously one of our favorite things to do in Granada. Want to know a list of the best ones to check out? Simply keep reading for a full list coming up later in the article. (You can also skip to that part here).

Things to Do in Granada #4:Walk El Camino de la Acequia Real

Speaking of beautiful views, you can really experience some stunning vistas of the city while heading up towards the Alhambra. While there are quite a few paths, we were recommended a lesser-known and scenic route called the Camino de la Acequia Real. It starts from Mirador de la Silla del Moro through to Paseo de Los Tristes.

Things to Do in Granada #6: Party in a Cave

One of the best things to do in Granada is to experience its unique nightlife. The first time I went to Granada was when I was studying abroad about 10 years ago, and my favorite memory was the epic night club located in a cave called El Camborio.

Since Covid, the night club has temporarily closed and now offers reservations at its rooftop terrace. It isn't exactly the same, but the vibe is still there, and the views are incredible.

Hopefully by the time you are reading this the night club will be back up and running! We visited this year in May and the only thing that was open was the terrace.

Things to Do in Granada #7: Visit Nearby Cities

Granada is a spectacular city. However, if you have time, there are a ton of great things to do in Granada's outskirts. Here are a few of our favorite day trips from Granada.

Soportujar

Welcome to the spookiest and most unique village of Spain. The name of the village translates to "place of arcades" and is essentially a town of witches. With a ton of history, and quirky houses, statues, and art scattered around, this is such a hidden gem of Andalusia to check out.

Cascada de Maro

This was definitely the most fascinating part of Nerja, as the waterfall cascades from a cliff into the ocean! Walk down to the beach and you can rent a kayak to get up close and personal.

Cueva de Nerja

Unfortunately the cave was closed when we went, as we arrived in Nerja in the afternoon (it closes at 6:30 pm and opens at 9 am). The stretch of caverns stretches 5 kilometers, and sometimes even holds concerts or other events.

Iznajar

This is truly a hidden gem of Andalusia, and was one of our favorite spots to stop on our drive from Granada back to Sevilla.

Iznajar is a lakeside village an hour from Granada. Walk the small streets and you can see the influence of knitting with embroideries and designs hanging on the walls and from the buildings. Another thing we loved about Iznjar is an area where you can find tons of blue painted flower pots lining the squares and stairs.

Malaga is one of the most popular destination in Andalusia, and is just an hour and a half from Granada. You could easily spend a few days in this city, but many of the highlights can also be done on a day trip from Granada.
