How to Get Around Vilnius, Lithuania: a Brief Intro

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a truly unique city that blends historic beauty with quirky art.


Whether you're exploring the charming streets of the city center or heading to the different creative corners, knowing how to get around Riga will make your visit much smoother. With various transportation options available, navigating Lithuania's capital can be both easy and affordable.


There are a few different options to choose from when it comes to Vilnius' transportation, making it accessible for all different types of budgets and travel styles.

✈️ How to Get from the Airport to the City

Being just 7 km away from the airport, you can so easily reach the city of Vilnius both quickly, and cheaply! Know matter which option you choose, you can make it from Vilnius Airport to the city in just 15-20 minutes, and for as little as 1 euro.


Here are the different options for getting from the Vilnius airport to the city center:

🚌 Take the bus

There are direct trips all day and night from the airport to the city, with multiple lines making the trip. Trips are just €1, which can be paid on the bus, and the ride is about 20 minutes. If you arrive between 11:30 pm 5:30 am, you can take Bus 88.

🚊 Take the Train

Trains run directly to and from the airport to the Vilnius Railway Station 16 times per day. The journey takes just 7 minutes, and a ticket costs €0.70, making it the most convenient and affordable option. Tickets can be purchased online, on the train, or at the railway station.

🚕 Take a Taxi or Ride Share

Taxis can be found right outside the airport, and have official rates to abide by. Rides cost between €9-12, and can be paid by cash or credit card, taking around 15 minutes. Uber and Bolt are also available, so you can try these as well.

Now that you know some of the transportation options for how to get around Vilnius, let's dive into each one so that you can understand which of them are the most ideal for each parts of the city.

🚶 How to Get Around Vilnius by Foot

Vilnius is a super walkable city, especially in the historic center and Užupis areas. You can easily experience the top things to do in Vilnius by foot, and we'd honestly encourage it because there are so many hidden treasures to be found walking around! 


As many other European capital cities, there are plenty of pedestrian-only streets, sidewalks, and infrastructure to make it perfectly safe and comfortable to explore Vilnius on foot. With cobblestone streets and some hills though, make sure to wear some comfortable shoes.


We'd also highly recommend doing a free walking tour in Vilnius, so that you're able to see some hidden gems and learn the history behind each corner!

Vilnius is a super scenic city to explore by foot.

🚌 How to Get Around Vilnius by Public Transport

If you're traveling from one neighborhood to another, or simply can't put any. more steps in, then don't worry! Vilnius has excellent public transportation and actually has one of the newest bus fleets in all of Europe.


Rides can be paid for individually, or you can get a 1-day or 3-day transportation pass, which is great if you are in town for a short time and want to see a lot.


If you download the Trafi app then you will be able to save money on each ride (tickets onboard are €1.50 rather than €1 for example), as well as recieve real-time updates of all public transport and traffic conditions directly to your phone.

🚖 Getting Around Vilnius by Taxis and Ride Apps

Just like many other cities around the world, you can easily get around Vilnius by taxis by hailing them down or calling them, and on ride-share apps like Bolt, Uber, and E-taxi.


Bolt is typically a bit cheaper than Uber, and taxis can be a bit more expensive - always make sure to have the meter on while in a cab, or at the very least agreeing on a price before you set off.

🚲 Biking and E-Scooters

If the weather is nice, renting bikes or e-scooters is a fun and easy way to get around Vilnius. There are plenty of bike lanes, and the city is overall really bike and scooter friendly.


Bolt not only offers car-sharing, but you can rent a scooter on demand right with their app! Simply pick up any scooter on the street, set up the ride with your app, and you're ready to explore in just minutes!


As for bikes, you can rent a bike for a day in Vilnius, or you can join one of the cool bike tours below!

🚗 Renting a Car in Vilnius

In big European cities we tend not to rent cars as much, unless we're doing a lot of day trips. That being said, there are a couple of options for renting a car, and one that we absolutely love!


While we didn't have time to see anything outside of the old town of Vilnius during our previous visit, next time we definitely plan on exploring the surrounding towns and other locations throughout Lithuania - and a car is perfect for this!


Renting a car is easy, and can be done from the airport or the city itself. However, if you want to be a more eco-friendly traveler and only need a car for a quick trip, then you will absolutely love our next option!

While this is not our preferred method of travel, it can be really helpful for those that are traveling with a group and want to see the highlights, or those that have limited mobility. The Hop-On Hop-Off bus stops in all of the tourist highlights around the city, and you can hop on and off whenever you please for the entire day.

Visiting Vilnius in during the holiday season? Each December the city has a small choo-choo train that rides around the old city. If you're traveling with little ones, then this is a great way to see the city in a fun and simple way.

🚆 Day Trips and Regional Transport

Now that you know how to get around. Vilnius, what about exploring outside of it? There are some great day trips from Vilnius you can take both by bus and train.


You can easily experience other popular tourist sites and villages in Lithuania like Trakai, Kaunas, and Klaipeda, or you can venture out of the country to popular cities like Warsaw, Poland, or the nearby capital of Latvia, which is just 4 hours away!


You can purchase bus tickets from Vilnius online or at the central station, and the same goes with purchasing train tickets. Domestic tickets are more frequent and tend to have plenty of space, but for international trips we'd highly recommend getting your tickets in advance.

  • Taking the train is often the cheapest and fastest way to get from the airport to the city.
