Our first moment we realized this was on a crowded metro of people who looked stressed and unapproachable. The metro was jerking and we were trying to keep our belongings together. Straight-faced, 4 different people just helped us - no exchange of words, just a small grin of acknowledgement that we're all in this together.

It’s even common for locals to invite travelers for coffee or help them find their way, even if they don’t speak much English. The culture is very family-oriented, and staying in guest houses allow you to really enjoy this unique aspect of what Armenians are truly like. It’s one of the many reasons we fell in love with Armenia and will definitely go back one day.

1. Yerevan

Yerevan is the capital and heart of Armenia, and where most journeys begin. It’s a lively city filled with art, music, and some of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Known as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Yerevan blends ancient history with modern energy, making it a really unique city.

If you plan on spending just a few days in Armenia, we recommend using Yerevan as your home base, and maybe taking a day trip or two to see some of the nearby nature and historical sites. If you plan on spending a week or more, you can use Yerevan as your starting and ending point of a fun road trip.

2. Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is one of the most beautiful natural landmarks in Armenia, surrounded by mountains and peaceful villages.

Often called the “Jewel of Armenia,” this massive freshwater lake sits high in the mountains and changes color with the light of day. Visitors come for swimming, kayaking, or relaxing along its beaches, especially in summer when locals escape the city heat.

Atop a peninsula overlooking the lake sits Sevanavank Monastery, one of the country’s most photographed sights, while dotted around the lake you can find other monasteries, cemeteries, and markets to explore. It's one of the must-see places in Armenia, and worth going for a day trip or spending the night.

3. Gyumri

Gyumri is Armenia’s second-largest city and a place full of charm and creativity.

The city is famous for its black-and-orange stone architecture, intricate door, cobbled streets, and artistic atmosphere. Stroll through the old district of Kumayri to see beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, or make your own locally-inspired door magnet.

4. Areni

Areni is a small village that holds a big reputation as the wine capital of Armenia.

This area has been producing wine for thousands of years, with the world’s oldest known winery discovered in a nearby cave. Travelers can taste bold red wines made from local grapes and visit boutique wineries surrounded by scenic cliffs, and we heard there is also a lavash-making class here!

We actually just stopped here for breakfast, and when we found out they didn't have coffee we started our day at 9 am with the most generous glasses of wine, local food, and beautiful views on a terrace. Areni is small, but it's a village that captures the essence of rural Armenia and a great place to indulge in local cuisine.

Traveling to Armenia in Autumn? Every October, Areni hosts the annual Wine Festival, which celebrates Armenian culture, food, and music. It’s a great way to meet locals and experience the country’s long winemaking tradition firsthand.

5. Goris

Goris is one of Armenia’s most picturesque towns, tucked among green hills and rock formations like Cappadocia, Turkey.

We actually showed up here looking to capture a magical sunset, to find hundreds of people dressed up for a music festival there! If you happen to visit in summer, make sure to snag tickets to this unique event. We captured it from above, and the FOMO truly sat in from not being able to go.

12. Geghard Monastery

Geghard Monastery is right nearby Garni Temple, making it a great addition to exploring this incredibly impressive corner outside of Yerevan.

The monastery itself is a true masterpiece carved into the cliffs of the Azat Valley.

This UNESCO-listed site was partially built inside a mountain, giving it an almost mystical feeling. The monastery’s name means “Monastery of the Spear,” as it once held the spear believed to have pierced Christ’s side.

13. Charent’s Arch

Charent’s Arch is a viewpoint rather than a monument, but it’s one of the most iconic places to see Mount Ararat and the valley surrounding it.

Located just outside Yerevan, this stone arch frames the mountain perfectly (on a clear day), especially at sunrise or sunset. It’s named after Yeghishe Charents, a famous Armenian poet who often wrote about the mountain’s beauty.

Bring a camera, because this spot offers one of the most breathtaking views in the country.

14. Khor Virap

Khor Virap is one of the most famous monasteries in Armenia, sitting right on the border with Turkey and offering incredible views of Mount Ararat.

The monastery is where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before converting Armenia to Christianity in the 4th century. Today it’s a popular pilgrimage site and one of the most photographed places in the country.

On clear days, the contrast between the white mountain and the red-brick monastery is mind-blowing, and particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset with the golden glow on it.

It's an easy visit, with just a short walk, but you can explore deeper and deeper on the well-paved path, or hop on a small train to get you there faster.

23. Shaki Waterfall

Shaki Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia, located near the town of Sisian.

It drops from a height of about 18 meters into a rocky canyon surrounded by greenery. The short trail leading to the waterfall is scenic, and you can also go down to the river to have a relaxing picnic.

It’s especially beautiful in spring when the flow is strongest and the surrounding fields are covered in wildflowers.

24. Trchkan Waterfall

Known as the “Armenian Niagara,” Trchkan Waterfall is one of the tallest and most powerful waterfalls in the country.

Located between the Lori and Shirak regions, it’s a bit off the beaten path but well-worth the journey. You can enjoy it from a viewpoint at the top, or take a short hike to enjoy the true power of the waters from the bottom.

We found big groups of locals barbecuing there all day, with picnic tables and plenty of room to hang out and make a day of it.

25. Vorotan 

The Vorotan River area in southern Armenia is full of hidden gems, and has a few surprises sitting right by one another.

The Vorotan Pool is a popular swimming spot, surrounded by cliffs and shaded by trees. Nearby, the Vorotan Bridge arches over thand has basalt columns as a backdrop. The Vorotnavank Monastery and Vorotnaberd Fortress nearby add a perfect blend of history and nature to this area.

It’s an amazing region for hiking, photography, and exploring Armenia’s wilder, lesser-known landscapes.

26. Devil’s Bridge

Devil’s Bridge is one of Armenia’s most unusual natural formations, and was our favorite destination in the entire country. 

Found near Tatev, this large canyon area was created by mineral-rich hot springs that formed layers of rock over centuries. Beneath it are small caves filled with colorful stalactites and pools of warm water.

It’s an adventurous spot to explore and pairs perfectly with a visit to the nearby Tatev Monastery.

27. Mount Khustup

Mount Khustup rises above the city of Kapan in southern Armenia, creating one of the most striking skylines in the country.

It’s a popular destination for hiking, with several routes that lead to panoramic viewpoints. On clear days, you can see all the way across Syunik’s mountain ranges.

Gravi Dza is one of the least-known natural sites in Armenia, located in the Syunik region.
