Since Azerbaijan and Armenia don't have their land border open, we used it as an excuse to revisit one of our favorite cities in the world - Tbilisi, Georgia. Georgia and Armenia have their land border open, and while there are various options to choose from, we're so happy we chose the train from Tbilisi to Yerevan.

ย Why Take the Train from Tbilisi to Yerevan?
The Tbilisi to Yerevan train is a truly scenic and comfortable ride, and an easy option for those looking to travel from Georgia to Armenia.
The journey winds through rolling countryside, quiet villages, and dramatic mountain passes that showcase the beauty of the South Caucasus.
It is not the fastest way to go, but it is definitely the most atmospheric and authentic. Not only that, but you can opt for taking the overnight option, which will save you a night in a hotel, and losing a day traveling.
Is Yerevan Worth Visiting?
While Tbilisi holds a special place our hearts, we do believe Yerevan is worth visiting too! The city is full of history, and has a lot of cute cafes and excellent food.
Past the capital itself, Armenia has so much to offer in terms of culture, cuisine, and landscapes. We took the Tbilisi to Yerevan train, and after a few days in Yerevan did a big road trip around Armenia, which we'd highly recommend!
Which is Nicer, Georgia or Armenia?
Georgia certainly has a bit more to offer in terms of variety, but both countries are special in their own way! The first time we visited the Caucasus we had this ambition of visiting three countries in two weeks. We ended up spending the entire time in Georgia, and it wasn't even enough!
Taking the Tbilisi to Yerevan train is an excellent option for those that are slow-traveling and have lots of time, or for those that simply would like to see the highlights of the capitals and focusing on those two cities instead.

Tbilisi to Yerevan Train: Tickets & Times
Traveling from Tbilisi to Yerevan by train is both easy and affordable. The route is served by a comfortable overnight train that runs between the two capitals several times a week, depending on the season.
Tbilisi to Yerevan Train Timetables
The Tbilisi to Yerevan train usually departs from Tbilisi Central Railway Station in the evening and arrives in Yerevan early the next morning. The exact schedule can vary by season, with more frequent departures in summer, but is typically every other day.
The #371 train leaves at 8:20 p.m. and arrives in Yerevan around 6:55 a.m., making it a great overnight option that saves both time and the cost of a hotel night. For those traveling the opposite direction, the Yerevan to Tbilisi train follows a similar schedule (leaving 9:30 pm and arriving 7:35am), but on alternating days.
ย Days You Can Take the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train
Trains between Tbilisi and Yerevan run every other day, so it's important to keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.
Trains leaving Tbilisi to Yerevan are on odd days of the month (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc), while trains coming back to Tbilisi from Yerevan run on even days of the month (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc).
Tickets for the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train
There are a few options for getting the tickets. You can purchase them on the Armenian train website (although it can be a bit wonky) or on Get Your Guide, or you can purchase them inside the Tbilisi station in cash.ย
The cheapest option is the purchase the ticket inside the Tbilisi station, but tickets are limited and can sell out, or the most expensive tickets may only be available. This is ideal if you're in Tbilisi for several days, and have some flexibility in your schedule.
If you'd like to secure a good rate but have your ticket booked in advance, you can try the official website, although they don't always accept foreign cards.ย Get Your Guide tickets are more expensive, but it's a safe and reliable option for those preferring convenience.

How Much is the Train from Georgia to Armenia?
Train tickets vary on a number of factors. There are three classes, with first class being the most expensive, and third being the cheapest.ย
There are new cars and old cars, and the newer ones are a bit more expensive. (We stayed in the old one and found it to be perfectly comfortable). Finally, there is a small price difference between the bottom bunk and the top bunk, which saves you a tiny bit.
- 1st class: private cabin
- 2nd class: cabin of 4 bunk beds
- 3rd class: open space with many beds
We didn't want to spend a ton, but also wanted some comfort and privacy, so we chose 2nd class in the old car with one of us having the bottom bunk and one having the top. We actually got super lucky and had the car to ourself though, so it worked out perfectly.
Tickets for 3rd class for adults start at 9,085 AMD, and go up to 18,375 AMD for 1st class. For children rates start at 5,965 AMD and go up to 11,495 AMD. These are the prices on the official Armenia rail website and prices paid in the Tbilisi station are the equivalent in GEL.
Documents Needed for Crossing from Georgia to Armenia
When traveling on the Tbilisi to Yerevan train, you will need your passport and, if required, a visa for Armenia. Most travelers, including citizens of the EU, United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days.
When you are leaving Georgia, you'll have to get off the train to go through customs, which took us around 20 minutes. For Armenia though, the border officers come onboard.
They collect passports, complete the inspection, and return them before the train continues toward Yerevan. It is a smooth and straightforward process, but can is a good 30 minute stop for the train ride.
Is it Easy to Cross the Border from Georgia to Armenia?
Crossing the border by train is pretty standard, and only slightly inconvenient when leaving Georgia, since it's late and does disturb your sleep.
For the Armenian entry itself, you can remain in your seat or sleeper cabin the whole time, and there is no need to worry about finding immigration offices or filling out additional paperwork.
Compared to other land borders, the train route is one of the most comfortable and stress-free ways to cross from Georgia into Armenia.
Tbilisi to Yerevan Train: The Experience
The Tbilisi to Yerevan train was definitely one of those great adventures we've decided to embark on. It was a last minute change of plans, since we had to find a way to Armenia from Azerbaijan. We couldn't find flights that didn't make a stopover in the Middle East, wasting a full day, so we decided to fly to Tbilisi from Baku, spend a day there, and then take the overnight train.

Getting Our Tickets for the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train
As soon as we landed in Tbilisi we went straight to the Central Railway Station. Upstairs there were two ticket counters. One man looked pretty grumpy and then there was a smiley lady speaking English in the other - so that's the one we chose.
The wait wasn't too long (although we did hear if you go between 9 and 10 there can be long lines). The lady told us there were very limited seats left, but could luckily get us on. She asked us several questions about which class we wanted, if we wanted a new or old car (we honestly don't have a cue the real difference), and if we wanted top or bottom bunks.
Eventually she found us a car we could be in together, and asked for our passports. We had to find an ATM to take out money, and as soon as we got back we were handed our tickets, with an explanation of the track and timing.
ย Boarding the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train
After a long day of exploring Tbilisi and drinking *way too much* Cha Cha, we made it to the station about 20 minutes before departure. With full bellies and a good buzz, we grabbed some water, our passports, and the tickets to board the train.
We were given a cabin steward, and he gave us our sheets, pillows, and instructions for setting up our beds. We plugged in our electronics, and set everything up, ready for a good nights' rest onboard.
ย Customs and Border Control
One we arrived at the border, we had to get out to do customs in order to leave Georgia. We all stood outside going one by one, as families were carrying their passed out children and the young travelers were trying to patiently wait to get our stamps out.
It was one of those moments that felt like forever, but probably didn't take nearly as long as we thought.
After getting back on the train, we had to stay ready for the next stop where the Armenian immigrations officers would board. Our steward got us up again and took our passports, as the officers went from car to car to get everyone cleared. This was an easy process, just a long one to stay awake for.
ย Riding Through Armenia on the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train
We slept like babies the rest of the night. The sun started rising and we started to get a glimpse of the stunning landscapes. We attempted to use the Wifi, which wasn't working, so we ended up just washing up, grabbing one of our snacks, and enjoying the views.
Our steward came with high energy and a smile on his face pretty frequently to chat, collect our sheets, and give us updates. I thought it was endearing, but Fede was definitely getting annoyed 
.
ย Arriving in Yerevan
The train made several stops in Armenia, with the longest being in Gyumri. Once we arrived in Yerevan (the final stop), we gathered our belongings and got off the train ready to start a fun day exploring Armenia's capital.
The station was clean, pretty, and had a piano to entertain Fede while we waited for our ride. All in all, it was a great experience, and one we'd recommend to any traveler looking to visit Armenia from Georgia.

ย Linens Onboard
Trains have beds onboard, and we opted for the car with 4 beds. Linens and pillows are given free of charge, and collected towards the end of the journey.
ย Outlets on the Train from Tbilisi to Yerevan
Each train car has an outlet that fits European plugs (type F). We brought a power surge to plug in so that we could charge all of our devices at the same time. Just make sure that you have the proper converter so you don't blow out your electronics!
Toilets on the Tblisi to Yerevan Train
There are plenty of toilets on the train, and they even have hoses if you're looking for a bidet. Bathrooms were clean, and all of them had trash cans, toilet paper, and soap.
Showering & Freshening Up
Want to freshen up before you arrive to Yerevan? The train actually has showers you can use! For being on a train we were shocked with how nice they were. The towels were tiny though, so you'll have to wipe yourself down and change right inside.
Food & Drink Onboard
There is no food and drink offered onboard for purchase, although we did receive a complimentary sandwich. There is also hot water if you'd like tea, coffee, or to have some instant soup or noodles. Other than that, we'd recommend bringing your own water and snacks, and to have dinner before getting on the train.
Wifi on the Train
Supposedly there's Wifi on the train, but we weren't lucky enough to get connected. We have T-Mobile, so have (low-speed) data in both countries. If you have a Georgian SIM card, then just remember to either purchase roaming, or turn your phone on Airplane mode once you get to the border.
Alternatively, you can purchase an e-SIM for Armenia before crossing the border, so that you can have service on your phone right away.

Is Taking the Tbilisi to Yerevan Train Safe?
The train from Tbilisi to Yerevan is very safe! We did feel extra comfortable though opting for the semi-private cabin. If you do want to take the a third class seat in the open car, we would recommend keeping your belongings together.
We actually use a travel safe when we move around a lot on public transportation and link all our bags together. I don't think it's totally necessary on the train since there are employees moving around, but it always gives us a piece of mind in situations like this.ย

The taking the overnight train from Tbilisi to Yerevan is an excellent way to start exploring Armenia after a trip to Georgia. It saves you the expense of a night in a hotel, and also saves you time and the hassle of flying. It's certainly more comfortable than taking a bus, and is still pretty budget-friendly.
If you are planning on visiting both Armenia and Azerbaijan, connecting in Tbilisi is also one of the easiest and most recommended ways to travel from one country to the next.
