We will be honest with you, getting here is an adventure in itself. Between the slippery paths, the boulder scrambling, and the GPS that will almost certainly try to take you down the wrong road, Cerro El Rodadero is one of those experiences that requires a little preparation. But the payoff at the top is absolutely worth every bit of it!

The second viewpoint in particular, reached by scrambling through a field of large boulders, rewards you with one of the most jaw dropping panoramas in all of Puerto Rico.

We like to call it “the best seat in the house”, because there’s a rock at the top that feels like a throne overlooking the island.

It is one of our favorite photo spots on the island, and if you are looking for a hike in Puerto Rico that combines a genuine physical challenge with an incredible view, this is it.

🤔 Is This Hike in Puerto Rico Good for Everyone?

This hike in Puerto Rico is not for everyone, and we want to be upfront about that. It is not recommended for young children or anyone who is not comfortable with heights or uneven terrain. The trail gets slippery after rain, the second viewpoint involves real boulder scrambling, and the final iconic rock requires careful climbing with significant drops nearby.

That said, for adventurous and reasonably fit travelers, Cerro El Rodadero is one of the most rewarding hikes in Puerto Rico and an experience you will not forget.

How to Get to the Cerro el Rodadero Hike in Puerto Rico

Cerro El Rodadero is only accessible by car, so renting one is essential. We recommend booking your rental from San Juan in advance to get the best rates and availability.

🚗 Getting to the Cerro el Rodadero Hike in Puerto Rico

The best way to get to Cerro El Rodadero is via Route 2 toward Yauco. There are a couple of different roads that can get you there depending on where you are coming from, but we strongly recommend hopping on Route 2 as early as possible. Trust us on this one.

We made the mistake of following the secondary road that Google Maps directed us to, and it was genuinely one of the scariest drives of our lives. The road is extremely steep, barely paved, and at one point we actually had to get out and push the car uphill because it simply would not go any further. Take Route 2. You will definitely thank yourself later!

A quick but important note: GPS in Puerto Rico is notoriously unreliable. Google Maps and Apple Maps both have a surprising number of errors across the island, particularly for more remote spots like this one. When in doubt, ask a local to confirm your directions before heading out.

🅿️ Parking for the Cerro Rodadero Hike

Parking at the trailhead is limited, so when you find your spot make sure to park facing outward in case other cars arrive after you. Space to maneuver is tight, and you do not want to be stuck trying to turn around on a narrow mountain road.

Now that you know how to get there, here is exactly what to expect once you hit the trail at Cerro El Rodadero.

🥾 The Trail to Cerro el Rodadero

The hike itself is short, around 20 to 25 minutes to the first viewpoint, but do not let that fool you. The trail can be extremely slippery, especially after rain, and requires your full attention the entire way up.

Locals have carved small footholds into the ground along the steeper sections to help with grip, but we recommend walking in the grass wherever possible to avoid unexpected slips. Proper hiking shoes are not optional here.

👀 The First Viewpoint at Cerro el Rodadero

After around 20 minutes you will reach an open clearing marked by a large Christian cross. This is your first viewpoint, and the views are already pretty impressive from here. But this is just the warm up.

⛰ The Second Viewpoint: The Best View on This Hike in Puerto Rico

From the first viewpoint, head left when facing the view, or east if you are following your GPS. This is where the hike in Puerto Rico gets really interesting.

You will be navigating along the edge of a cliff through a field of large boulders with no clear path, climbing over and under rocks and staying as close to the inside as possible. There are significant drops on your right hand side, so take your time and do not rush this section.

Once you make it through the boulders you will find the iconic rock. This is the moment that makes Cerro El Rodadero one of the most breathtaking hikes in Puerto Rico, with a panoramic view of the island stretching out in every direction below you. It is absolutely worth every scramble to get there.

Here are a few final tips for preparing for the Cerro el Rodadero hike in Puerto Rico.

⚠️ Staying Safe During the Cerro el Roadero Hike in Puerto Rico

This is one of Puerto Rico’s most incredible hikes, but it’s not recommended for kids nor the faint of heart. The views you will get are truly breathtaking, but there’s a high risk when hiking all the way up. Especially at the end, where you will literally have to climb through a rocky path to get to the top.

This is a safer alternative to get a good view without climbing up on the rocks.

🧴 Bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent

It may be self-explanatory and even obvious, but this is one thing that will definitely make you struggle if you forget about it. Hiking under the sun, surrounded by insects & bugs won’t be a pleasant experience if you don’t take care proper care of yourself. Stay hydrated, and don’t let the sun roast you!

🥾 Use hiking shoes (and bring a stick if possible)

With a slippery hike, the chances of falling are way higher if you’re walking without proper shoes. It happened to us, and it can happen to anybody. So make sure to be cautious and use any kind of extra support to avoid falling in the mud or along the rocks.

🌅 Do Not Hike After Sunset

The Cerro El Rodadero hike in Puerto Rico is technically accessible 24 hours a day, but hiking here after dark is strongly not recommended. We originally planned to go for sunrise, and were lowkey relieved when it didn’t work out.

The trail is challenging enough in daylight. In the dark, the boulder scrambling and cliff edges become genuinely dangerous. Plan your visit to give yourself plenty of time to complete the hike and get back before sunset, or make sure there is enough light if you are going early in the morning.

🗺️ GPS in Puerto Rico isn’t the most accurate

This is one thing you will notice all across the island. For some reason, there are A LOT of mistakes in Google & Apple maps when it comes to La Isla del Encanto. Asking locals to double-check directions is always a good idea, especially if you’re trying to reach a pretty remote spot.

There are two roads that lead to Cerro el Rodadero. One is paved well and gradually inclines to reach the starting point, while the other is quite the contrary.

We made the mistake of following the secondary road to get there (the one that Google Maps took us to) and it was one of the scariest drives of our life. The road is extremely steep, and we even had to push the car uphill at some point because it just wouldn’t go any further.

🧳 Packing List for Cerro El Rodadero

Here is everything we recommend bringing to make the most of this hike in Puerto Rico:

• Sunscreen 
• Bug Spray
• Reusable Water Bottle (we use this water bottle from Cafago because it holds the temperature)
• Sneakers
• Zippered Bag or Backpack – take a look at these backpacks for travelers!
• Power Bank (we use Anker power banks, as they are super long lasting and sturdy)
• Drone for some amazing footage (We use the Mavic Mini Pro 4 because it’s super light and doesn’t sacrifice quality)

Cerro El Rodadero is without question our favorite hike in Puerto Rico. It is short, free, and accessible without a guide, but it demands your full respect and attention from start to finish. Go prepared, take Route 2, wear proper shoes, and do not attempt the boulder scramble if conditions are wet or you are not comfortable with heights.

But if you are up for it, the view from that iconic rock at the top is one of the most breathtaking things you will see anywhere on the island.

The hike to Cerro el Rodadero will reward you with gorgeous views of the island, and one of the best Instagrammable shots in Puerto Rico. The most important things to remember are to stay safe, and be well prepared.
