The first time I visited Riga I was a young solo female traveler and felt completely safe! I'd recommend staying in a hostel so you can make friends, and to join tours to be able to enjoy some of the city's great acitivities.

Riga has a temperate climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. January is typically the coldest month with really short days, while July is the warmest and has very long days. Rain is possible year-round, so bring a waterproof layer just in case.

June through August is the most popular time to visit Riga, thanks to warm weather and long daylight hours. If you prefer fewer crowds and festive vibes, December is magical with its Christmas markets and snowy charm.


We love both summer and winter to visit Riga. Summer is great for its unique activities, perfect temperatures, and fun festivals, while winter in Riga is one of the most underrated destinations for the holidays.

Ready to pack your bags? Here are some things we'd recommend bringing with you on a trip to Riga:


  • Comfortable shoes for walking around (no heels!)
  • Bathing suit for the river in summer or for saunas in the winter
