How to Get to Las Paylas Natural Waterslide

Many times we find online these nature paradises that promise cool things. But then you check on a map to try to add it to your travel calendar and…boom! It’s in the middle of nowhere. Well, let us tell you that this is not the case.

Las Paylas natural waterslide is located in Luquillo, a charming little seaside town just 30 minutes east of San Juan. Getting there is not too difficult, but there are a few things worth knowing before you head out.

🚗 Getting to Las Paylas Natural Waterslide

We recommend renting a car to get to Las Paylas, as it gives you the most flexibility and is by far the easiest option.

If you do not have a car, you can take a public bus to Luquillo and then grab a taxi or Uber for the last stretch. There are also organized tours available if you prefer to leave the logistics to someone else.

While you are in Luquillo, make sure to stop at the famous line of food kiosks in town! The local food here is fantastic and it makes for a perfect lunch stop before or after your visit to Las Paylas natural waterslide.

🚪 Entering Las Paylas Natural Waterslide

This is where things get a little unusual, and worth knowing about in advance so you are not caught off guard. The only way to access Las Paylas natural waterslide in Puerto Rico is through private property, marked by a black gate. The owner of the property needs to be around to open it, and while it is usually open during the day, there is a small element of luck involved.

The owner charges $5 for parking, with around 6 to 8 spots available. He will guide you into your spot personally, and from there it is just a two minute walk down to the waterslide area. If you arrive on foot rather than by car, you can simply walk through without paying the parking fee.

It is a slightly unconventional setup, but locals will tell you it has been this way for years and it is completely normal. Just go with it! (Alternatively, we did see people hiking in from another area, but have no idea how they did it – it can also be worth asking a local when in Luquillo!).

Now for the best part. Here is what to actually expect once you arrive at Las Paylas natural waterslide.

💦 The Natural Waterslide

The main attraction at Las Paylas is of course the waterslide itself, and it absolutely delivers. To get to the top you will need to climb up a large rock, which is not technically difficult but can be a little slippery so take your time. If you want to test it out before committing to the full slide, you can start halfway down on your first go and work your way up to the top once you get a feel for it

The water can feel a little cool at first since the whole area is shaded by a dense tree canopy and does not get direct sunlight all day. But you adapt within a minute and after that it feels absolutely refreshing, especially on a hot Puerto Rican day.

🍃 Relaxing at Las Paylas Natural Waterslide

The natural pool at the bottom of Las Paylas waterslide is just as much of a draw as the slide itself. A lot of visitors come here with no intention of sliding at all, and simply spend a few hours chilling by the water with music, snacks, and good company.
