Cappadocia is located in central Turkey, spanning the Nevşehir, Kayseri, Kırşehir, Niğde, and Aksaray provinces. The main tourist hub is Göreme, which is at the heart of the region and close to many of the best valleys and attractions.

🛂 Do I Need a Visa for Cappadocia?

Whether you need a visa to visit Cappadocia depends on your nationality. Many travelers can enter Turkey visa-free for a set number of days, while others must apply for an e-Visa online before arrival. It’s quick, affordable, and can usually be completed within minutes.

During my first visit to Cappadocia in 2015 I (an American) was required to purchase a visa (for $50) upon arrival. Now (2025) Americans no longer need visas to visit Turkey!

The official site for Turkish border control has a list of every country listing whether or not you need a visa, and what kind of visa you can get.

🗣 What Language is Spoken in Cappadocia?

The official language is Turkish, but in tourist hubs like Göreme and Ürgüp, many locals speak English well enough to help travelers with hotels, tours, and dining. Learning a few Turkish phrases, such as “Merhaba” (hello) or “Teşekkürler” (thank you), can go a long way in making connections.

💵 What Currency is Accepted in Cappadocia?

The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While most hotels, restaurants, and tour companies accept credit cards, smaller shops, markets, and rural villages may require cash. ATMs are widely available in Göreme and larger towns.

🔌 What Type of Electrical Plugs are Used in Cappadocia, Turkey?

Cappadocia uses the European standard plug type F, with a standard voltage of 230V. Travelers from North America, the UK, or other regions will need an adapter, and sometimes a converter, depending on their devices.

🚰 Is Tap Water Drinkable in Cappadocia?

Tap water in Cappadocia pretty safe to drink, although locals typically recommend having bottled water instead. We usually bought large jugs of water from super markets, and refilled a reusable bottle from that just to be safe.

💸 How Much to Tip in Cappadocia

Tipping is standard in Turkey, and is typically around 10% of the bill. Some restaurants include service, while others you should leave cash on the table. Check your bill first to make sure the tip is covered or not. We also recommend tipping guides and hotel staff, as well as hot air balloon pilots (about 10% of the ride as well).

😋 What is the Food Like in Cappadocia?

We love the food scene in Cappadocia! Anatolian cuisine is a melting pot of influences from the Middle East, Central Asia, the Mediterranean, and even a bit from the Balkans. They're known for their meze (small dishes to share such as dips), their grilled meats, and yogurt-based dishes.

🥙 Must Try Dishes in Cappadocia

The number one dish to try in Cappadocia is the Testi Kebab, which is a slow cooked meat stew cooked for hours and served in a clay pot. It's broken right at the table, and the show itself makes it equally delicious and fun to experience.

Some of our other favorite dishes we loved were the dips like Atom Mezesi, Kiz Güzeli, and Haydari, as well as Manti (Turkish ravioli), Menemen (eggs with tomatoes and peppers), and Beyti Kebab (minced meat wrapped in lavash).
