Osaka is Japan’s third largest city and the beating heart of the Kansai region. It has been the country’s commercial and merchant hub for centuries, which explains a lot about the energy here.
The people are famously outgoing and hilarious, the streets are chaotic and vibrant, and the food culture is widely considered the best in all of Japan.
Beyond the food, Osaka is known for its buzzing entertainment districts, its deep history, and its incredible proximity to some of Japan’s most iconic destinations like Kyoto and Nara.

⛩ Things to Do in Osaka: Visit the Top Sites & Historical Landmarks
When it comes to landmarks, Osaka really does not disappoint. The city has a beautiful contrast – with centuries of history right alongside bold, futuristic architecture. Here are the sights we would put on any first-timer’s list!
🏯 Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle is honestly one of the most impressive castle complexes we have visited in all of Japan, and that is one of the most iconic locations in the city. The main area is surrounded by enormous stone walls and a beautiful moat, and the grounds feel genuinely grand even on a busy day.
Inside the castle is a really well-done museum that walks you through the turbulent history of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the warlord who commissioned it. We loved every bit of it, and the grounds outside are just as impressive as the castle itself.
💡 Pro tip: Go early in the morning when the light is soft and the tour groups haven’t arrived yet. This is when the locals go and the vibe is totally different.
🌳 The Japanese Garden Next to Osaka Castle
Here’s one that most visitors completely skip, tucked right beside the castle grounds is a stunning Japanese garden that deserves way more attention than it gets. We spent a slow hour walking the paths, watching koi swim around under arched bridges and taking in the manicured maple trees.
It’s the perfect contrast to the grandeur of the castle, and a great place to decompress if the crowds are getting to you. In spring, the cherry blossoms here are absolutely breathtaking! (We visited in summer but have seen pictures).
🏛 Osaka Central Public Hall
This stunning red-brick building on Nakanoshima Island dates to 1918 and is one of the most beautiful examples of Meiji-era Western-influenced architecture in Japan. The interior houses an exhibition space and a charming restaurant, but even if you just admire it from the outside it is absolutely worth going out of your way for!
🌃 Go Up the Observation Decks
Osaka has not one, not two, but three incredible observation decks , and we honestly loved all of them for different reasons. Here’s a breakdown so you can decide which ones are right for you!
🗼 Tsutenkaku Observation Deck
Tsutenkaku is the retro tower in Shinsekai that has been an Osaka icon since 1912, and we absolutely loved it. It feels like a completely different world from Harukas , more local, more nostalgic, with old signage and a neighborhood vibe that reminds you of an older, scrappier Japan.
The views from the deck are more modest, but honestly the charm of the surrounding area more than makes up for it. We love the platform that juts out there for a unique photo opportunity. Also, do not miss the Billiken statue at the top – rubbing his feet is said to bring good luck!
🔭 Harukas 300 Observation Deck
Abeno Harukas is the tallest skyscraper in Japan, and its observation deck on the 58th and 60th floors offers a jaw-dropping panorama over the entire city. On a clear day you can see all the way to Kyoto and the mountains beyond!
We recommend going at dusk and watching the city transition from golden hour to a full glittering night skyline. The deck has an outdoor walkway too, which makes it feel so much more immersive than a typical observation deck.
💡 Budget at least an hour so you can really linger and soak it all in.
🏙 Umeda Sky Building
The Umeda Sky Building might just be the most architecturally stunning building we have ever seen. Two towers connected at the top by a floating garden observatory, with an outdoor circular sky walk 173 meters above the city, it is genuinely otherworldly.
The views are unobstructed 360 degrees, and it tends to be less crowded than Harukas which is a big bonus. We loved the building itself as much as the views. After visiting, the surrounding Umeda area is great for dinner!
🎢 Spend a Day at Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan is one of the most popular theme parks in the world, and it is not hard to see why! The Super Nintendo World area is an absolute must for any Millenial wanting some nostalgia, and the Harry Potter section is seriously impressive. Whether you are visiting with kids or just young at heart, it is a really fun day out and one of the top things to do in Osaka!
🌿 Experience Team Lab Botanical Gardens
Team Lab Botanical Gardens is unlike anything we have ever experienced, anywhere. The installation transforms the grounds of Osaka’s Botanical Garden after dark into an immersive light art experience, where projections respond to your movement and bloom across flowers, ponds and trees.
It is dreamlike, genuinely moving, and impossible to photograph in a way that captures how it actually feels to be there. We left completely speechless, just like we did with all of the other Team Lab venues in Japan.
💡 Book your tickets well in advance, as this sells out weeks ahead and you do not want to miss it!
🏘 Explore the Different Neighborhoods
One of our favorite things to do in Osaka is simply wander and enjoy the neon lights, busy streets, and bright colors painted on the storefronts and restaurants. Each neighborhood has its own completely distinct personality, and getting a little bit lost is honestly part of the fun. Here are the ones that stuck with us the most!
🏮 Shinsekai
Shinsekai is one of Osaka’s most distinctive neighborhoods, a retro working-class district that feels frozen somewhere in the mid-20th century. The streets are lined with kushikatsu restaurants, pachinko parlors, and neon signs, and the whole area has a rougher, more authentic edge that you will not find anywhere else in the city. It is a really fun contrast to the polish of Namba and well worth a couple of hours of your time! (This is also where Tsutenkaku Tower is located).
🌆 Umeda
Umeda is Osaka’s northern hub and has a completely different energy from the southern districts. It is sleeker, more modern, and home to some of the best shopping, dining, and nightlife in the city. The Umeda Sky Building is located here, and the area around Osaka Station is great for exploring department stores, underground shopping arcades, and some really excellent restaurants.
✨ Namba
Namba is the beating heart of Osaka and the neighborhood you will likely spend the most time in. It is home to Dotonbori, the city’s most iconic entertainment strip, along with Shinsaibashi, Den Den Town, and some of the best street food in the city. Whether you are eating, shopping, or just wandering, Namba is the kind of neighborhood where you can easily lose an entire day without even trying!
🎨 Amerika-mura
Amerika-mura, or Ame-Mura as locals call it, is a creative counterculture pocket of the city packed with vintage clothing stores, street art, independent cafes, and record shops. It gives you a completely different side of Osaka’s personality and is a great place to spend a slow afternoon. Triangle Park in the center of the neighborhood is a great people-watching spot too!
⭐️ Enjoy Dotonbori & the Waterfront
Dotonbori is Osaka’s most famous strip and honestly one of the most electric streets we have experienced anywhere in the world. Loud, neon-drenched, and completely over the top, with the iconic giant mechanical crab spinning overhead and the canal reflecting it all back at you.
It sounds overwhelming and it is, in the most wonderful way. We went back multiple times during our trip, once during the day and a couple of times at night when it really comes alive. Do not skip this! Visiting here is seriously one of the best things to do in Osaka.
🛕 Visit the Temples and Shrines
Osaka’s spiritual side is easy to overlook when you are caught up in the food and the nightlife, but some of thenicest and mosgt relaxing moments of our trip happened at its temples and shrines. The city has a beautiful mix of ancient Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, ranging from grand historic complexes to tiny neighborhood spots tucked between apartment buildings.
We would recommend building at least one or two into each day rather than doing them all at once. They are great for slowing the pace down and giving you some quiet in between the chaos. Here are a few of our favorites:
🏪 Browse the Markets
Osaka has a well-earned reputation as Japan’s food capital, and nowhere is that more obvious than in its markets. Whether you are hunting for fresh seafood, incredible street food, or one-of-a-kind antiques, you could easily spend a full day just eating and exploring your way through them.
We would honestly build your whole morning or afternoon around whichever market you visit, because you are going to want to take your time. Here are our favorites:
⛵ Go on a River Cruise
Going on a river cruise along Osaka’s canals is one of the best ways to see the city from a completely different angle. Low bridges sweep overhead, you drift past old warehouse districts and under lantern-lit waterways, and the pace is wonderfully slow. Several operators offer different routes, so it is worth looking into what is running during your visit!

🌿 Hike to Minoh Waterfall
A short train ride from central Osaka, Minoo Park is a forested valley that culminates in a beautiful 33-meter waterfall and is one of the best half-day escapes from the city. The walk through the park takes about 45 minutes each way along a gently paved path lined with maple trees that turn extraordinary shades of red and orange in autumn.
Along the path you will find stalls selling momiji tempura, which are deep-fried maple leaves and a local specialty completely unique to this area. It is something you absolutely have to try!
🎡 Ride the Ferris Wheel
The Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel sits right in the middle of the city on top of the HEP Five shopping mall in Umeda, and it is one of Osaka’s most quirky and lovable landmarks. Riding it gives you a surprisingly great elevated view over the Umeda district.
We went at night when the city lights were blazing and found it genuinely magical in that slightly absurd, only-in-Japan kind of way.
🍜 Eat Your Heart Out
Osaka has a phrase associated with it: kuidaore, which roughly translates to eating yourself into ruin. Locals say it with enormous pride, and after spending time here we completely understand why. The food culture in this city is next level, and the eating experiences we had are some of the best we’ve ever come across.
Honestly, some of the best things to do in Osaka have nothing to do with sightseeing at all. They involve sitting down, ordering too much food, and not regretting a single bite. Here are a few of our absolute favorites:
🍣 Enjoy the Most Epic Sushi Experience
Sushiro truly is an experience that deserves its own spotlight, and was the number one highlight of eating in Osaka for us.
Unlike typically sushi conveyor belt restaurants, Sushiro has giant screens that you choose your sushi from, bringing you small plates and giving you mini games to play and win prizes. It’s cheap, delicious, and super fun!
Seriously, if you have just one meal in Osaka, let it be this one.
🛍 Go Shopping
Shopping in Osaka is an experience in itself, and one of the most fun things to do in Osaka. The city has an incredible range of retail, from sprawling covered arcades and local design streets to flagship stores you genuinely will not find anywhere else in the world. Here are our favorites!
👗 Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street
Shinsaibashi-suji is Osaka’s main covered shopping arcade and stretches for about 600 meters through the heart of the city. It caters to every taste and budget, from high-end boutiques and international brands to 100-yen shops and local snack stores.
We spent an entire afternoon wandering its length, sampling street food and ducking into tiny specialty shops. It connects directly into the Dotonbori entertainment district, so you can drift naturally from shopping into dinner.
🎨 Orange Street
Orange Street, officially known as Tachibana-dori, is Osaka’s design and lifestyle district and a completely different vibe from the buzz of Shinsaibashi. The street is lined with independent furniture stores, vintage clothing shops, ceramics studios, and small coffee shops with incredible interiors. If you love design and independent shops, this one is definitely worth adding to your list!
🛁 Lush Cosmetics Flagship Store
If you are a beauty lover, Lush Shinsaibashi is absolutely worth a stop while you are exploring the shopping arcade. The store has a fantastic selection of bath bombs, body sprays, and solid perfumes, and the staff are known for being incredibly helpful and giving personalized recommendations. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming, making it a great place to pick up some gifts or treats to take home!

🍸 Enjoy the Nightlife
Osaka’s nightlife is loud, unpretentious, and an absolute blast. The city has a completely different energy after dark, and the locals here know how to have a good time.
