The Best Time to Visit Socotra for Beautiful Landscapes and the Best Weather

Sharing is caring!

If you’re trying to figure out the best time to visit Socotra, the answer is a little different than it is for most destinations. Socotra has a defined tourist season from roughly October through May, while the summer months bring a powerful monsoon that shuts down organized tourism. We visited in October and had incredible weather for most of our trip, but there are also some very specific reasons you may want to plan your visit for later in the season.

March is particularly special because this is when Socotra’s famous bottle trees begin to bloom, covering parts of the island with beautiful pink flowers. So while October is an excellent time to visit, the “best” month really depends on what you want to see and experience.

In this guide, we’ll break down the weather, Socotra’s travel season, what each part of the season is like, and the best time to visit depending on what you’re hoping to experience.

The Best Time to Visit Socotra: A Brief Intro

Before breaking down the best time to visit Socotra by season and month, let’s first look at the city’s weather patterns and how long you should plan to stay.

First, this is not a destination where you can simply pick any month of the year and expect to find organized tours running. Second, the island’s weather changes dramatically during the monsoon season.

🌦 Weather in Socotra

Socotra has two very different periods when it comes to tourism. October through May is the main travel season, while the summer monsoon from roughly June through September brings strong winds and rough seas that make normal tourism impractical. Tour operators stop running organized trips during the monsoon, and access to the island can become extremely difficult.

Within the tourist season, conditions change gradually. October marks the beginning of the season after the monsoon, while the months toward the end of the season tend to be warmer and increasingly dry.

⏳ How Many Days Do You Need in Socotra?

Socotra is a remote island, and visiting isn’t really suited to plan a quick weekend or short getaway. Most organized tours are built around 8 days and 7 nights, which gives you enough time to travel around the island and see the top places to visit in Socotra like unique landscapes, beaches, mountains, caves, lagoons, and endemic plants.

Because organized trips generally follow a set route and schedule, your dates are also influenced by the tour dates that are actually available. This is one destination where we’d recommend choosing your travel window first and then looking at the tours operating during that period, rather than picking random flights and trying to build the trip around them.

For a first trip to Socotra, one week truly is the perfect amount of time. Next trip, we are definitely going for 10-14 days though!

📆 When is the Best Time to Visit Socotra?

The best time to visit Socotra is between October and May, since this is when organized tourism takes place. If you’re looking for comfortable conditions and the classic Socotra experience, the middle of the season is particularly appealing. If seeing the famous pink bottle tree flowers is a priority, March and April are the months we’d have at the top of our list.

We visited in October and had beautiful weather for most of our trip, making it a great choice for exploring the island soon after the monsoon season ends, but the group who went the week after us didn’t have as much luck.

The most important thing is to avoid the monsoon season from June through September. This isn’t simply a case of visiting during a rainy season and dealing with a few showers. Strong winds and rough seas make travel extremely difficult, and organized tourist trips stop operating during this period.

The Best Time to Visit Socotra: Seasonal & Monthly Breakdown

Socotra doesn’t have four traditional seasons like NYC, so we’re breaking the year into the periods that actually matter when planning a trip: the beginning of the tourist season, the cooler middle months, the bottle tree blooming season, and the summer monsoon closure.

🍂 October to November in Socotra

October and November mark the beginning of the tourist season after the summer monsoon. This is when tours start returning to the island, and the landscape can still be noticeably green from the months of monsoon weather.

October is when we visited, and we had excellent weather for most of our trip, but the trip after us had really bad luck with the weather. Temperatures are generally warm, and conditions are much more suitable for exploring, hiking, camping, and seeing the island’s incredible landscapes, but the earlier you go the riskier it can be since the monsoon season just ended.

Something to note is also that while the greenery is at its height, the waters in the canyons might not be as clear during this time since its after the storm season.

⭐️ Perfect for: Comfortable exploration, hiking, greenery, and an early-season trip

❄️ December to February in Socotra

December through February falls in the middle of the main tourist season. Temperatures are generally comfortable, making this a popular period for exploring the island and spending time outdoors. The sea also tends to become calmer during this part of the season, which can be good for boat trips and water activities.

These months are a good choice if you want to experience a little bit of everything Socotra is known for without specifically planning your trip around the bottle tree bloom or greenery.

⭐️ Perfect for: Hiking, camping, beaches, boat trips, and exploring the island

🌸 March to May in Socotra

This is the part of the season that nature lovers and photographers may want to pay particular attention to. Honestly, our next trip to Socotra will definitely be planned for this time of year!

March is when Socotra’s bottle trees begin to bloom, creating incredible pink flowers across the island. The main flowering period is generally concentrated around March and April.

The weather also becomes warmer and drier as the season progresses. March and April can offer beautiful conditions for seeing the island’s landscapes and endemic plants, although temperatures can become very hot later in the season.

⭐️ Perfect for: Bottle tree blooms, photography, snorkeling, diving, and nature

🌬️ June to September in Socotra

This is the period to skip entirely for a normal tourist trip to Socotra. The southwest monsoon brings extremely strong winds and rough seas, and organized tours in Socotra stop operating. Flights can also become unreliable, while many of the activities and routes that make a Socotra trip possible are affected by the conditions.

So unlike destinations where we might tell you that summer is simply hotter or wetter, there really isn’t a reason to plan a trip to Socotra during these months. The tourist season starts again around October.

⭐️ Perfect for: Staying somewhere else!

The Best Time to Visit Socotra: Final Thoughts & What’s Next

Socotra isn’t a destination where you have to choose between four different seasons. You really have one main window for tourism, from October through May, and then a summer monsoon that effectively closes the island to organized visitors.

  • Plan your trip between October and May.
  • Avoid June through September, when the monsoon shuts down organized tourism.
