Sharing is caring!

Visiting Socotra is an incredible experience, but itโ€™s very different from traveling to most destinations. During our week on the island, we got to explore landscapes that felt almost otherworldly, swim in crystal-clear water, see the famous dragon blood trees, and experience the warm hospitality of the local people. It was unlike anywhere else weโ€™d been.

Part of what makes Socotra so special is how untouched it feels. There are very few crowds, little artificial light to interfere with the night sky, and huge stretches of nature where the only sounds are the wind and waves. But that remoteness also means you need to approach the trip differently than you would a typical vacation.

If youโ€™re planning a trip, there are a few things worth knowing before you go. From how the tours work to what daily life on the island looks like, these are the things we think will help you prepare for your time in Socotra.

Basic Info for Visiting Socotra

Before diving into all of the things to know before visiting Socotra, let’s take a look overall at what the island is like.

๐Ÿคฉ Why Socotra Is Such an Exciting Destination

Socotra is home to some of the most unusual landscapes we’ve ever seen, and it’s one of our favorite places we have ever visited.

From the iconic dragon blood trees and towering sand dunes to limestone caves, crystal clear waters, and white-sand beaches, the scenery feels almost otherworldly. The island isn’t only only remote, but it is far removed from what we know as normal everyday life – which is another layer of what makes it so fascinating.

We also loved how welcoming the local people were throughout our trip. Socotra has a strong sense of community, and the people we met made our week on the island even more memorable. If you’re looking for somewhere that combines adventure, nature, and a completely different travel experience, Socotra is an absolutely incredible destination for your bucket list.

Things to Know Before Visiting Socotra

Now that we’ve covered what makes Socotra such a special destination, let’s get into the practical details. These are the things we recommend knowing before your trip so you can arrive prepared and make the most of your time on the island.

1. You Can’t Book a Flight to Socotra on Your Own

Getting to Socotra is different from booking a regular international flight. Flights operate on a limited schedule, and you generally can’t book them independently through a typical airline search engine.

Instead, flights are arranged through a tour operator or agency as part of the process of organizing your trip. Your operator will help coordinate the necessary arrangements, so it’s important to choose a company you trust and start planning well in advance.

For more details about routes, flights, and how the process works, check out our guide on how to get to Socotra.

2. Flight Rates Are Fixed

One thing that’s different about flying to Socotra is that flight rates are generally fixed rather than fluctuating in the same way as most commercial airline tickets. You won’t find the usual differences in fares based on how far in advance you book or which day you search.

Flight tickets all cost the same, and only change over time from government tax increases or depending on where you fly from. Whether you book a flight for next week or next year, you’ll be locked in at the same rate.

However, seats are limited, so availability is still important. Ask your tour operator to confirm the current flight rate, schedule, and availability for your dates.

3. You’ll Need a Visa

You’ll need to arrange a visa before visiting Socotra, and the process isn’t the same as applying for a visa for a typical holiday destination. The embassies of Yemen operate separately from the Socotra visa process, and your tour operator will generally coordinate the necessary arrangements, including the documentation needed for your trip.

Visa paperwork actually needs to be done inside Yemen, which is why your visa will need to be taken care of by either a tour company, or someone you know living inside Yemen.

You can also find more info on this in our guide to taking a Socotra Island Tour.

4. You Need to Be Flexible With Your Plans

Socotra is remote, and things don’t always go exactly according to schedule. Weather, road conditions, and logistical changes can affect your plans, so we’d recommend giving yourself alternative dates of travel, and having a bit of a buffer for before and after your trip.

The biggest thing you should know is that the island of Socotra has been a particular point of interest for a few different areas of the Middle East, and because of that, flight schedules and politics around the island are changing often. Safety in Socotra remains at ease, but it can definitely affect flight availability!

When it comes to the trip itself, weather and road conditions may mean the itinerary might have to change a bit. Your guide will adjust the details for the itinerary though – so you won’t need to worry about that at least!

5. Socotra Is Safer Than Many People Expect

We know that some people have doubts about visiting Socotra because of it being a part of Yemen, but our own experience on the island was incredibly positive. We felt very safe throughout our week there, and the local people we encountered were some of the most welcoming we’ve met in our travels.

Socotra has very little crime and a close-knit community. The atmosphere we experienced was very different from what many people might imagine before visiting, and was the polar opposite of what the US travel advisories shares. We share more about our firsthand experience in our guide about safety in Socotra.

6. There Is a Serious Trash Problem

Although Socotra’s natural landscapes are breathtaking, trash is a visible problem in certain areas, particularly around Hadiboh. The island has limited waste collection and disposal infrastructure, and the contrast between the beautiful scenery and the litter in some places can definitely be disappointing.

While this is certainly not something that will change your trip drastically, It’s worth being aware of this beforehand so it doesn’t come as such a shock. Also, don’t be alarmed – but the goats will be eating much of the trash (minus the plastic).

The one thing we can recommend is that as tourists we should always do our part by minimizing single-use items, taking our trash with us when appropriate, and treating the island’s natural spaces with respect. When packing for Socotra we definitely think this is something important to keep in mind.

7. There Aren’t Hotels All Around the Island

Accommodation options on Socotra are limited, particularly outside Hadiboh. There are only a handful of hotels, and they’re pretty much all in the capital. Socotra island tours involve camping as you travel around the island rather than hotel stays, although some may put you in a hotel room for one night at the beginning or end of your trip in Hadiboh.

The hotels in Hadiboh are extremely basic as well. If you’re someone who wants a luxury stay, hot water, and fluffy pillows, then you may want to consider if visiting Socotra is right for you.

Your tour company will generally provide the camping equipment, including tents and bedding, along with meals. The setup can vary, so ask your operator what is included and what you’ll need to bring yourself. We absolutely loved our camping setup, and Socotra Specialty Tours did an excellent job of making our stay as comfortable as possible.

8. Bathroom Facilities Can Be Basic

The bathroom situation is far from ideal in Socotra, but it honestly wasn’t anything that drastically changed our trip. Campsites and some of the top tourist sites in Socotra almost always had a bathroom. However, when you’re on the road or stopping for lunch at a random beach, don’t expect a bathroom to be at your fingertips.

We actually had to go out in nature quite a few times, so it’s important to be prepared. Bring your own toiletries, extra tissues, and hand sanitizer. It’s also worth thinking about personal hygiene when packing, especially if there are specific products you prefer to use.

For women who have flexibility with their travel dates, the best time to visit Socotra will certainly be outside your period dates. It’s certainly possible to visit Socotra while on it, but camping, long drives, and limited bathroom facilities can make things less comfortable than they would be on a typical trip.

9. Phone Signal and Wi-Fi Are Very Limited

One of the biggest adjustments when visiting Socotra is how little connectivity you’ll have. Phone signal and Wi-Fi are very unreliable, even in Hadiboh. Once you’re exploring remote areas, you should be prepared to spend long stretches completely offline.

Download maps, important documents, music, podcasts, and anything else you’ll want to access before arriving. Don’t rely on being able to search for information, stream content, or contact people whenever you need to. We typically work while traveling, and during our Socotra trip we couldn’t even post on social media, no less have enough internet for anything else.

We actually think disconnecting can be part of what makes Socotra so special, but it’s best to be prepared for it rather than expecting reliable internet access throughout the trip.

10. Electricity Is Limited

Electricity is another thing to plan around, especially when you’re camping in remote areas. You won’t necessarily have convenient outlets available whenever you need to charge your phone, camera, or other electronics.

Bring a power bank and a car charger, and charge your devices whenever you have the opportunity. If you’re planning to take lots of photos, spare camera batteries are particularly useful so you don’t miss out on capturing the landscapes.

11. The Distances Are Long

Socotra might not look particularly large on a map, but getting between its different landscapes and attractions can take a long time. Roads can be rough, and some areas are difficult to reach, so driving is a significant part of the experience.

Bring something to keep yourself entertained during longer journeys, such as downloaded music, podcasts, audiobooks, or a book. Since mobile signal is limited, make sure anything you want to listen to or read is available offline.

12. Socotra Is a Slow-Travel Destination

When we plan road trips, we typically pack our itinerary! One of the things that surprised us the most when we started our Socotra trip was just how lowkey it was. We got to our campsite super early, and had hours of just hanging out before dinner. We’d have time to explore, have some tea, relax a bit, then have dinner.

As very high energy individuals, it took some getting used to on our end. After a few days though, we started to really enjoy the slower pace and soaking up ech and every place we went to.

If you prefer a more packed schedule, talk to your guide before the trip and see whether they can add more stops to your itinerary. What is possible will depend on your route, travel times, and conditions, but discussing your preferences in advance gives your guide a chance to plan accordingly.

13. You’ll Need to Get Used to Early Mornings

Daily schedules in Socotra tend to follow the sun. Dinners are generally earlier than many travelers may be used to, and mornings start early so you can make the most of the daylight and cooler temperatures.

As sunrise lovers, this was something we really enjoyed about visiting Socotra. If you’re a night owl though, you may want to consider adjusting to this.

If you’re camping, the sun can also wake you up pretty quickly. Tents can heat up as soon as the sun rises, which makes sleeping in difficult. Be ready to adjust to an earlier schedule, and consider bringing an eye mask if you’re sensitive to light.

14. Food Options Are Limited

Food is typically arranged by your tour company, with meals prepared as part of the trip. The variety is more limited than in destinations with plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, especially once you’re away from Hadiboh.

The island of Socotra is very remote, and therefore doesn’t even have a ton of options when. it comes to imported goods. Many of our meals included fish caught that day, goat, some veggies, and either rice or pasta.

If you have dietary restrictions, allergies, or particular food preferences, let your guide know well in advance. Bringing a few favorite snacks can also be helpful if you like having something between meals or want a few familiar options on hand.

15. You Should Dress Appropriately in Towns

When visiting Hadiboh and other populated areas, it’s best to dress modestly out of respect for the local community. When packing for a trip to Socotra, make sure to keep in mind some more conservative items. We recommend covering your shoulders and knees, especially when walking around town or visiting local businesses.

Lightweight, breathable clothing works well in the heat. You don’t need to cover yourself from head to toe, but packing a few modest outfits makes it easy to dress appropriately when you’re around town.

16. You Can Dress More Casually When Exploring Nature Though

While you should cover up in towns, this island is different than some other destinations in the Middle East. Socotra’s atmosphere is much more relaxed when you’re away from populated areas and spending time at remote beaches, swimming spots, and campsites. Outside of towns there is no dress code!

You’ll want comfortable clothing for hiking and exploring, along with swimwear for enjoying the water. Even if you do see locals there, it’s not anything to worry about at all.

The main thing is to be mindful of your surroundings. Dress more conservatively around local communities, and pack practical outdoor clothing for the rest of your trip.

17. You’ll Need to Pack More Than You Think

Because shops and supplies are limited, we suggest being prepared before you arrive. Bring the toiletries, medication, sun protection, and personal items you rely on rather than assuming you’ll be able to replace them on the island (news flash – you probably won’t).

Some particularly useful things to pack include:

  • Sunscreen and after-sun care
  • Bug spray
  • Comfortable walking shoes and water shoes
  • Flip-flops and swimwear
  • Lightweight clothing and a few modest outfits for town
  • Toiletries, soap, tissues, and towels
  • Any medication and personal hygiene products you need
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A power bank and car charger
  • A headlamp or flashlight
  • A camera and spare batteries, if photography is a priority

๐Ÿ’ก Your tour operator should also provide a packing list based on your itinerary and the equipment included in your trip. For a more detailed breakdown of our personal recommendations though, read our Socotra packing guide.

18. Socotra Has Incredible Night Skies

One of our favorite things about visiting Socotra was the lack of light pollution. Away from populated areas, the sky can be incredibly dark, allowing you to see countless stars on a clear night, and even the other side of the moon!

Even if you’re not into photography, make time to sit outside at night and enjoy the view. If you enjoy astrophotography, make sure to bring a tripod and the camera equipment you’ll need to capture the night sky. Camping in such a remote place gives you an incredible opportunity to appreciate just how much you can see when there’s very little artificial light around.

19. You Can Use Drones, but Check the Regulations

Socotra’s landscapes are spectacular from above, so bringing a drone can be epic if you enjoy photography or videography. However, it’s important to keep in mind where you’re flying into to get to Socotra.

Many destinations in the Middle East do not allow drones in the country at all, so check their restrictions so that you don’t get your drone confiscated in the airport.

Final Tips for Visiting Socotra

Socotra is an incredible destination, but it’s important to arrive knowing that the experience will be different from a conventional trip. We found that the best way to enjoy the island was to prepare for the practical details while staying open to the unexpected.

Here are the main things we’d keep in mind before visiting Socotra:

  • Arrange your flights and visa through your tour company.
  • Be flexible with your dates and itinerary, since plans can change.
  • Expect camping and basic facilities rather than hotels around the island.
  • Bring the toiletries, medication, snacks, and electronics you know you’ll need.
  • Dress modestly in towns, while packing comfortable outdoor clothes for the rest of the island.
  • Download entertainment and useful information for offline use.
  • Charge your devices whenever you can, and don’t expect reliable phone signal.
  • Let your guide know about dietary needs before you arrive.
  • Help keep the island clean by carrying your trash and reducing single-use plastics.

We absolutely loved our time visiting Socotra, and the things that made it challenging were also part of what made it such a memorable adventure. If you’re prepared for the limited amenities and willing to be flexible, you’ll be able to focus on what makes this island so special.
