When we were getting ready to experience bioluminescence in Puerto Rico, we were expecting a sea of blue shining. The reality is that those photos you may have seen are all a product of photoshop.
As magical as this experience is, you won’t see a whole bay glowing constantly for you. Microorganisms react to movement, so the light will only be spotted where something (or someone) agitates the water.
I know this may sound like a bummer, but it’s better to know exactly what to expect and then get fascinated than expect a James Cameron movie and find out that’s not the reality.

One thing we loved about our experience in La Parguera is how relaxed it was. You can bring your own drinks, and a lot of people treat it like a fun evening out on the water. If you plan on bringing anything, grab it before heading to the dock though! Prices near the departure points tend to be much higher.
🎒 A Waterproof Backpack (or Dry Bag) Will Save You
Even though the bay is a very calm body of water, the boat goes fast, and this causes splashes. Also, people come on & off the boat when they go into the kayaks. This will accumulate water on the boat’s floor, so you want to get your things protected from it.
If you have a waterproof backpack or bag, we strongly encourage you to bring it. If you don’t, you can simply put the backpack inside a plastic bag, when left on the floor. This way, you can make sure all your stuff will remain safe throughout the excursion.

📸 It’s Not Easily Photographable
When we first did the tour we saw how incredible the bioluminescence looked right in front of our own eyes! We were dying to capture this view on our cameras so that we could show our family and friends just how spectacular was.
The reality is that even with a professional camera, video or photo, it’s almost impossible to see it when recorded. Unless you have a lens that lets an incredible amount of light in, and can keep the camera steady for minutes (which is practically impossible on a kayak) then chances are you won’t be able to capture the bioluminescence in Puerto Rico like you may have been hoping.
We suggest merely enjoying the experience for what it is. Skip trying to capture the beauty, and live right in the moment.
