Visitors from the US, UK, Australia, and Canada can travel freely to Greece and the other countries in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
As Greece is part of the Schengen Zone, all other nationalities part of the Schengen Zone can visit and work in Santorini without restrictions, while other visa-exempt nationalities are able to visit for a limited time.

The 90/180 Rule states that all visitors that do not need a visa for visiting Greece (or other countries of the Schengen Zone) are able to spend 90 days within a 180 day period.
Remember that the 90 days apply to all countries in the Schengen Zone, not just Greece. For example, if you spend two weeks in Italy before arriving in Santorini, those 14 days count toward your 90-day limit.

✈️ How to Visit Santorini by Flight
The easiest way to get to Santorini is by flight, and the most well-connected city to Santorini is Athens, that has flights going all day, every day by a few different airlines.
Santorini International Airport (JTR), located just outside of Fira, is the main gateway to the island. Direct flights operate regularly from Athens and several European cities, with additional seasonal routes during peak holiday months.

🌊 How to Get to Santorini by Sea
For many travelers, sailing to Santorini is part of the classic Greek island experience. The island is well-connected by sea, with both local ferries and cruise ships docking there frequently.
⛴️ Ferries to Santorini
There are multiple daily ferries from Athens (Piraeus and Rafina ports) and other popular islands like Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete, and Ios. Summertime is the most best time to visit Santorini by sea, as this is when schedules are more frequent and abundant.
Athens (Piraeus or Rafina) to Santorini: High-speed ferries take about 5–6 hours, while slower ferries take 8–9 hours.
Crete (Heraklion) to Santorini: About 2 hours on a high-speed ferry.
Ios to Santorini: approximately 35 min.
Milos to Santorini: approximately 2 hrs.
Mykonos to Santorini: Around 2–3 hours by high-speed ferry.
Naxos to Santorini: 1 hr to 2 1/2 hrs.
Paros to Santorini: 1 1/2 hrs to 3 hrs.
Rafina to Santorini: approx. 5 hours.
Ferries arrive at Athinios Port, which is about 20 minutes from Fira. From there, you can take buses, taxis, or private transfers to your hotel.
🛳️ Cruises to Santorini
Santorini is also a major cruise destination, with ships docking near the old port of Fira. When we were working on cruise ships, we actually used to visit Santorini quite frequently! The season for cruise ships to Santorini starts in April and typically goes through October.
Since there is no big port area, passengers are tendered ashore by smaller boats, and from there you can take a cable car, walk the steep steps, or ride a donkey (though we BEG you not to do this because it is cruel to the animals).

Santorini has buses connecting the main villages, but they can get crowded in high season, and limiting if you want to visit hidden gems. Summer is the most popular time to visit, while spring and fall offer great weather with fewer crowds.
