Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It sits about 600 miles (965 km) southwest of Lisbon and roughly 300 miles (480 km) off the coast of Morocco.

🏖 Are There Beaches in Madeira?

While Madeira isn’t known for long stretches of golden sand like mainland Portugal, it does have plenty of unique beaches worth visiting.

Many are pebble or black sand beaches, shaped by the island’s volcanic origins, and they offer crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkeling. There are also several natural lava pools where you can swim in calm waters while waves crash dramatically against the volcanic rock.

For those seeking a more traditional beach day, there is also a nearby island to the main island of Madeira called Porto Santo, It's part of the Madeira archipelago, and boasts a 9-kilometer stretch of golden sand.
