While Tallinn is magical no matter when you visit, Christmas is particularly incredible! Tallinn has an amazing Christmas Market in the main square, and the streets are covered in lights and beautiful decor.

🥶 What is the Coldest Month in Tallinn?

The coldest month in Tallinn is February, and when we say it gets cold, it gets COLD. We were freezing when we went in December, and our Uber driver told us that in February the temperatures can drop -25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees Fahrenheit).

It actually gets so cold that the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia freezes over so deep that you can drive from one country to the other!

📆 Is January a Good Time to Visit Tallinn?

While the holiday season is certainly the most ideal time to enjoy Tallinn in winter, January is definitely still a month worth visiting if you want to experience the beauty of the city covered in snow.

❣️ Wander the Old Town

Wandering through the cobblestone streets of Tallinn feels like stepping into a medieval fairytale. Add snow into the mix, and you've got yourself a truly magical atmosphere.

With its pastel-colored buildings, hidden courtyards, and winding alleyways, the old town is incredible to enjoy year round, and is also small enough that you won't need to be outside for extensive amounts of time.

Whether you're admiring the beautiful architecture, browsing cute shops, or simply soaking in the historic charm, the streets of Tallinn's old town are perfect for getting lost. Just don't forget to bring your camera!

🖼 Explore the Museums

Tallinn is home to tons of great museums, and the winter is the perfect time to experience them, and break up your time exploring the streets of the old town.

Check out the variety of museums in the old town like the KGB Prison Cells and the history museum, or head a tiny bit outside the center to enjoy the impressive Kadriorg Art Museum that's surrounded by beautiful gardens and a cozy cafe nearby.

The Harju Street ice rink has a beautiful backdrop of historic buildings, offering a magical skating experience. Whether it's your first time skating or a you're a pro, it’s a fun way to embrace the season right in the heart of Tallinn's old town.

🎅🏻 Visit the Christmas Market

If you're planning on visiting Tallinn in winter, then don't miss out on the incredible Christmas Market that transforms the Old Town Square into a Christmas haven.

With twinkling lights, festive stalls selling handcrafted gifts, and some really delicious food, it’s one of our favorite Christmas markets in Europe, and another one of the reasons to visit Tallinn in winter.

🛍 Experience the EKA Arts & Crafts Fair

Not only does Tallinn have an incredible Christmas market, but they also have a special arts & crafts fair each December. 

We were walking around Telliski Creative Center and just so happened to be chatting with a local who knew about the one-day-a-year event, which happens in the EKA arts center. It was on December 8th in 2024, but we'd recommend checking for the 2025 date if you plan on visiting Tallinn next winter.

The fair was several levels of local designers with their handmade products, and truthfully we were blown away by some of the artists!

🍔 Have a Bite to Eat at Balti Jaama Turg

Also known as the Baltic Station Market, Balti Jaama Turg is a unique market offering around 300 different merchants and shops.

Whether you're looking for a bite to eat, to browse the fresh produce, or simply walk around and soak up the festive vibes, this market is definitely a great place to go if you're visiting Tallinn in winter.

It's located just outside the old center of Tallinn, so you can get there with just a short walk. We recommend trying Bill the Butcher's truffle sausage!

☕️ Sip on Some Glogi or Hot Chocolate at a Cozy Cafe

Like we said, winter in Tallinn is COLD, so what better way to break up your sightseeing than popping into a cozy cafe? The old town particularly has some super cute ones, but we also loved the adorable cafe outside the Kadriorg Art Museum called Katharinenthal Kohvik.

Also, don't miss out on trying some of the seasonal beverages! Glogi is the local version of mulled wine, which is really popular in the winter, and you can also find seasonal flavors for coffee like gingerbread and peppermint mocha.

🧸 Learn How to Make Marzipan Figurines

Marzipan is not just a treat in Tallinn - it’s a true form of art that's been going on for centuries! Head to the oldest cafe in Tallinn and sign up for their one-of-a-kind marzipan workshop, where you can sculpt and paint your own edible figurines.

This fun and interactive activity at Cafe Maiasmokk is great for all ages and is the perfect way to bring a festive souvenir home with you.

🍖 Have a Feast at Olde Hansa

This is hands-down our favorite dining experience in Tallinn, and the perfect way to enjoy a hearty meal in the winter.

Olde Hansa is a medieval-themed restaurant in the heart of the old town where you can experience an authentic feast straight out of the Middle Ages.

With candlelit wooden tables, servers posing as servants, and a menu featuring unique cuts of meat like bear, boar, and elk, dining here is truly an iconic experience. Also, the honey beer is one of the best beers you'll ever have!

🌊 Check Out Pirita Beach

Okay, this is obviously much more a summer activity, but if you want a super special landscape to admire and photograph, then going to Pirita beach is a great thing to do in Tallinn in wintertime!

The calm sea with the snowy forest is the perfect combination for a wildly different landscape, and it's the perfect spot for a quiet walk or a little photoshoot.

💧 Experience Frozen Waterfalls

Just a half hour outside the old town of Tallinn, you can experience the beautiful Jagala waterfall.

We went there in the summer, and it wasn't until getting home that I realized it would have been truly magical to visit in the winter. 

You can either take an Uber, a guided tour, or with the public bus #152b or 154.

🧥 What to Wear in Tallinn in Winter

Winter in Tallinn can be brutal, so the key to dressing properly for a visit to Estonia's capital in the colder months is to wear plenty of layers, using thick materials.

For Winter in Tallinn You Should Wear:

• a hat or ear muffs to cover your head and ears
• gloves (we use the ones where you can still use your phone)
• a scarf
• thermal socks
• insulated boots (they don't need to be snow boots)
• a thick jacket (mine has faux fur)
• fleece lined tights so you can dress up
• flat shoes (you won't want to have heels with the cobblestone streets)

🧳 How to Pack for Winter in Tallinn

other than dressing warm, we have a few recommendations for things to bring with you while experiencing winter in Tallinn.

For Winter in Tallinn You Should Bring:

• hand warmers
• a camera to capture the magic
• a lens with a wide aperture to capture more light (we use the Sony GM 14" FE 1.8)
• a drone for unique perspectives of the Christmas market and snow covered roofs (we use the DJI Mini 4 Pro because it's easy to travel with and has excellent quality).
• a backpack to put your layers in when inside (check out our list of recommended backpacks!)
• bathing suits for saunas or hot tubs in your hotel

Visiting Tallinn is incredible in summer, but we truly loved Tallinn in winter, especially for its beautiful Christmas Market and the stunning panoramas of the city with the snowy rooftops.

While it is super cold and days are short, we still think Tallinn in winter is worth it, especially in December.

⭐️ Our Recommendation for Visiting Tallinn in Winter

Want to know what we just did this year in winter? We experienced 5 days in the magical region of Finnish Lapland, by renting a car from Helsinki.

After visiting Finland, we decided to travel to Tallinn via ferry. While most ferries are a short 2-hour ride, we actually came across an overnight ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn!

It was so much more than just transportation. They had restaurants, shops, bars, a spa, and onboard entertainment. It was an epic way to spend our Saturday night, and it truly is a unique experience to put on your bucket list! You can do the reverse of what we've done, or visit Lapland and then do an overnight cruise with a day in Tallinn before heading back to Helsinki.
