The Best Things to Do in Tallinn Outside the Old Town

The old town of Tallinn is full of beauty and charm, with plenty to see and do. You cold easily spend a few days in just Tallinn's old town, but there is also so much to see and do just outside of it!

We've already written and article about the best things to do in Tallinn's old town, but now it's time to share all of the hidden gems and other cool things to do in Estonia's capital.

1. Visit the Kadriorg Museum

This art museum is special because it is housed inside a former royal palace built by Peter the Great. Its colorful baroque exterior and beautifully landscaped gardens make it one of the most picturesque spots in Tallinn, while the inside holds an impressive collection of European and Russian art,

A visit here is a must for those looking for things to do in Tallinn outside of the Old Town that combine history, art, and architecture.

2. Stroll Around Kadriorg Park

Right next to the Kadriorg Art Museum, this beautiful park is perfect for a leisurely walk or a relaxing afternoon escaping the crowds of the old town. With its peaceful ponds, elegant fountains, and charming walking trails, Kadriorg Park is a favorite amongst both locals and visitors. 

Whether you're admiring the Swan Pond or simply enjoying the fresh air, this is one of the best ways to experience Tallinn beyond the Old Town.

Also, don't miss out on the cutest cafe here, which also has great pastries and coffee! (I got one with sausage that was fantastic).

3. Stop by the KUMU (Estonian Art Museum)

6. Check out the Creative Area of Telliskivi

Let's head a little outside of the old town in Tallinn, to the creative area of Telliskivi.

We love this area for its fun hipster vibes, as it's full of quirky restaurants, cool graffiti, fun shops, and street fairs in the summer time.

Our personal favorite of this area was a restaurant right next to the train tracks. This is because they had an outdoor window-looking frame with the best view of the tracks.

We were just visiting Tallinn in winter, and it didn't seem to be there. We're not sure if it's temporary, under construction, or has been demolished, but keep an eye out for it just in case!

7. Dine on a Train

For a trendy and unique dining experience, head to Peatus, a bar and restaurant set inside two repurposed Soviet train carriages. 

Located in the Telliskivi Creative City, this quirky spot is popular for its laid-back atmosphere, craft cocktails, and delicious street food.

Whether you’re stopping by for a casual lunch, an evening drink, or live music events, Peatus is a great place to soak up Tallinn’s creative scene outside of the Old Town.

8. Chow Down at Depoo

Just a stone's throw from Peatus, Depoo is a small street that features a variety of small restaurants and food trucks. It's a great place to soak up the trendy vibe of the area, as well as enjoying a variety of cuisines in one place.

9. Visit the History Museum’s Maarjamäe Palace

For a deeper dive into Estonia’s past, Maarjamäe Palace is a must-visit. This stunning 19th-century manor, now part of the Estonian History Museum, offers fascinating exhibitions on Estonia’s journey through different historical periods.

10. Walk Around Maarjamae Memorial

Just a short walk from the palace, the Maarjamäe Memorial stands as a reminder of Estonia’s turbulent history. We particularly found this place interesting because it is actually very similar to the memorial in Liberty Park, NJ for 9/11 (which of course this one was here first). 

Originally built during the Soviet era, the site now honors victims of both Nazi and Soviet regimes. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a quieter, reflective place to visit, this memorial is worth the stop.

11. Take a Walk Through Pirita

Pirita is one of Tallinn’s most scenic coastal areas, and was one of the places that wowed me most on my first trip to Tallinn! It's a pretty unique beach, as it's lined with a giant forest in the back. 

The tall trees, ocean breeze, and cool waters, make the perfect spot to spend your day, and there is also a restaurant or two that you can grab a drink or snack at as well.

Whether you're taking a relaxing stroll, sunbathing, or stopping by a beachfront café for a snack, Pirita is a fantastic getaway from the city center.

12. Check Out the Tallinn Olympic Center 

Just next to Pirita Beach, you can find another unique point of interest, the Tallinn Olympic Center.

Built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, this place still stands as a hub for sports and recreation. While the sailing events originally took place here, today the center offers various sports facilities, events, and even a marina where you can enjoy a seaside walk. 

Whether you're into water sports or just want to soak up the Olympic history, this is a great stop for those exploring Tallinn beyond the Old Town.

13. Let Out Your Energy at Nõmme Seikluspark

Hidden within the dense forest behind Pirita Beach, Nõmme Seikluspark is the perfect adventure spot for thrill-seekers. This outdoor adventure park features ropes courses, zip lines, and obstacle courses, making it a fun destination for both kids and adults.

Just a half hour outside the old town, lies a beautiful waterfall. This is a great spot for some quiet time, a picnic, or a dip in the cool waters. Visiting in winter? You can also go and enjoy the stunning cascades that freeze making a magical icy wonderland.

You can either visit Jagala waterfall by hopping on the bus, taking an Uber, or taking an organized tour.

15. Check Out Keila Waterfall

While Jagala is a more well-known waterfall outside of Tallinn, Keila Waterfall remains a true hidden gem outside the capital.

Other than the cascading falls, the area features two suspension bridges, a neo-gothic mansion, and various hiking trails to enjoy, making it a fun and unique day trip to take from Tallinn.

16. Party With the Sun Up

Did you know that due to its location, for a large part of the summer the sun only sets for a couple hours? The nightlife is pretty fun in Tallinn, and has a great backpacker vibe about it.

Head out all night long, and you'll find that it's completely bright by 3:00! It's a very odd, but kind of exciting feeling. Having a bright night out is definitely one of the best things to do in Tallinn both inside and outside of the old town.

17. Roam Around an Abandoned Prison

Patarei is an abandoned prison sitting on the Baltic coast, a stone’s throw away from the old town of Tallinn. Here is a window into the brutality of the Soviet regime, sitting right on the beach. To get here you can take the bus to station Lennusadam and it is just a five minute walk from there.

18. Take a Seaplane Harbour Maritime Museum Tour

The Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) Maritime Museum is one of Tallinn’s most exciting and immersive museums. 

Located inside a historic seaplane hangar, this museum showcases Estonia’s maritime history with interactive exhibits, real ships, and even a submarine that you can explore.

It’s a fascinating experience for history buffs and families alike, making it a top highlight for those looking for things to do in Tallinn outside of the Old Town.

18. Shop Around at Balti Jaama Turg

This Renovated Baltic Station Market is a unique universal market where people can buy and sell food, manufactured goods, antiques and more. There are almost 300 different merchants and shops at the market, with a gym inside as well.

When we first went in the summertime, there was a very unique ice cream shop where you could make your very own special creation! Fede had a lot of fun with this one. He got to go behind the counter and learn how to make his very own rolled ice cream creation. Then it is finished off with tons of sugary goodness.

We just went back to Tallinn in in the winter, and it was no longer there, but it could just be that it's a seasonal kiosk. This time we went, our favorite was Bill the Butcher, who had delicious sausages - our favorite was the truffle one! 

20. Buy Local at Keskturg

This is the central market in Tallinn, where you can find a variety of local products from fresh fruits and veggies and local cheeses to handmade crafts.

It's the perfect spot to pick up authentic Estonian goods and enjoy the bustling atmosphere of a traditional European market, while experiencing the everyday life of Tallinn’s residents. 

21. Discover Rummu Quarry & Underwater Prison

Just 50 minutes by car outside of the city (or an hour ½ by bus) lies one of the most unique places to visit near Tallinn! Rummu is a flooded area where you can find a prison that is underwater! For something a little extra, you can take a night tour in rafts that are equipped with electric lights - a truly unique experience.

22. Sail Over to Prangli Island

If you’re looking for a peaceful island escape, Prangli Island is a fantastic option. Just a short boat ride from Tallinn, this island offers pristine beaches, scenic coastal views, and a relaxed village atmosphere. 

During the summer, it’s a popular spot for locals who come here to enjoy the fresh seafood, outdoor activities, and quiet nature. A day trip to Prangli is a great way to explore beyond Tallinn’s city center.

31. Sail Over to Helsinki for the Day (or a Night)

Did you know that you could go to Finland with just a quick ferry ride? It takes 2 1/2 hours, making Helsinki a great day trip from Tallinn if you start early, or the great weekend getaway!

We actually came to Tallinn from Helsinki with an overnight cruise, which was the perfect way to have a fun and unique night out, arriving in Tallinn in the morning. We'd recommend going on the early ferry to experience Helsinki for the day, and then taking the overnight cruise from Helsinki to Tallinn to get back in the morning.
