The weather in Cappadocia is pretty specific, and unlike any other place we have been! As Turkey is a traditionally warmer destination to travel, we assumed that spring would be warmer and sunnier than Europe - boy, were we wrong!
Cappadocia has a semi-arid continental climate, which means that summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and snowy. There are large temperature swings from day to night, meaning it can be scorching hot during the day, and almost freezing in the middle of the night!
We'll dive more into the weather patterns and exactly what to expect each month later on in the article.

Cappadocia is stunning year-round! But if you love flowers or greenery, then there are certain months that are better than others to consider while choosing when to visit Cappadocia.
Spring time you'll start to see certain flowers blooming - we saw some cherry blossoms in springtime, and when we came back at the end of June we found these stunning tall and colorful flowers covering the area. From May til August is lavender season, so June and July you'll really get to experience the fields in their peak!
After the heavy rains in spring the valleys will be greener, and if you visit in the winter you'll get to experience the beautiful fairy chimneys covered in snow, which feels like a true fairytale.
Crowds in Cappadocia
Depending on when you visit Cappadocia really will make a difference in the vibe. Certain months are completely packed with tourists, while others feel like the area is completely desolate.

Winters provide a stunning snowy-filled landscape, but you'll really need to bundle up! This time of year the temperatures can be harsh. The good news though? Days start later, so you can sleep in a little more than you would in the summertime.

The warmest month in Cappadocia is August. We're visiting now (early July), and the nights are still cool, and days are pleasantly warm. It's apparently not until August that temperatures truly hike up to the 90's or 100's (30's-40's Celcius). September is also really hot, but starts to cool back down again later in the month.
What is the Rainiest Month in Cappadocia?
Most online travel guides say that April has the most rain in Cappadocia. However, every local we spoke with claimed that the rainiest month in Cappadocia is actually May. We visited from the end of March to Mid-April and experienced quite a lot of rain, hail, and wind while in Cappadocia during that time.
Locals also claim that the weather can be really crazy and unpredictable until June 15th-20th, and the end of June they start to experience warm and sunny days. It seems quite specific, but at least 10 people said those exact dates, so we're going to take their word for it!
What is the Windiest Month in Cappadocia?
March is the windiest month in Cappadocia, and April and May also tend to have high winds. The winds really calm down significantly around the end of June, and pick up at the end of October/early November. December and January are colder than windy in nature, and February winds can start to pick back up.

Snow can start as early as October, and go as late as May in Cappadocia. The snowiest months though are from the end of the year in December through February.
Is it Worth Going to Cappadocia in winter?
While it's brutally cold in Cappadocia in the winter, there's no denying there's some magic to it. Do Cappadocia Balloons Fly in Rain?
Hot air balloons do fly in the rain, and the snow! The one thing that does affect the hot air balloons greatly though, is the wind. Hot air balloons in Cappadocia are not allowed to fly if the wind is 13km/hour or higher. So the weather can look great, but if the valleys have wind picking up, then the balloons won't fly.

Prices and crowds go hand-in-hand when looking at the best time to visit Cappadocia. Naturally, the most crowded times to visit are the most expensive, and the low season has lesser crowds and lower prices.
High Season in Cappadocia
Most people would assume that the busiest months in Cappadocia would be in the summer, and the low season would be in the winter. Ironically, April is one of the busiest months, even though it has the worst weather, and this is because Turkish people have their spring vacation.
September is the most popular and crowded month, and October also has a lot of people (hoping to see a bit of snow but not have blistering cold temperatures).
Low Season in Cappadocia
Summers have excellent weather conditions in Cappadocia, but they're actually the low season! This is because people flock to the seaside in the summer. We're here now in summer and it is so quiet and peaceful, and hotels are half the price as they were in April and May.
December and January are the slowest months in Cappadocia, and you'll also find particularly great deals on hotels and tours during these months.
