We recommend combining walking with public transportation. Rather than trying to walk across the entire city, take the train between neighborhoods and then spend time exploring each one on foot. It’s by far the easiest and most enjoyable way to experience Osaka.

Osaka has one of the best public transportation systems in Japan, making it easy to reach just about anywhere in the city. Between the Osaka Metro, JR trains, and several private railway companies, you’ll rarely have trouble getting where you need to go.
One thing we highly recommend is purchasing an ICOCA card (or using another compatible IC card like Suica or PASMO). Simply tap in and out at the station gates instead of buying individual tickets every time you ride.

The Osaka Metro is the easiest way to travel between most of the city’s top attractions. It has multiple lines covering the city, with frequent trains and English signage throughout the stations.

JR trains are perfect for reaching destinations like Osaka Station, Universal Studios Japan, and for taking day trips to places like Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass, many JR routes are already included, making them an especially convenient option.

You’ll also come across railway companies like Hankyu, Hanshin, Keihan, Kintetsu, and Nankai. While it may seem confusing at first, Google Maps will tell you exactly which train to take, so there’s no need to memorize the different companies.

Taxis are one of the most comfortable ways to get around Osaka, especially if you’re traveling with luggage or heading somewhere after the trains stop running. They’re clean, safe, and easy to find around major stations and tourist areas.
That being said, taxis are significantly more expensive than public transportation. We mostly recommend using them for late nights, airport transfers, or when convenience outweighs the cost.

While renting a car gives you plenty of flexibility, we don’t recommend driving within Osaka itself. Between the excellent public transportation, busy streets, and limited parking, a car often creates more hassle than convenience.
A rental car makes much more sense if you’re planning to explore destinations outside the city, such as the Japanese countryside, the Kii Peninsula, or other areas that aren’t as easily reached by train.

Exploring Osaka by bike is a great option if you want to slow down and experience the city from a different perspective. The terrain is mostly flat, making it easy to ride between neighborhoods while discovering local cafés, parks, and quieter streets along the way.
If you prefer to explore on your own, you’ll find plenty of bike rental shops throughout the city. We recommend using Google Maps to locate the closest rental location near your hotel.
