It felt louder, grittier, and far less polished than the other Japanese cities we’d experienced, and our first impression wasn’t exactly love at first sight.
We arrived in a neighborhood that didn’t make the best first impression, wandered through parts of Dotonbori where people were passed out after a night of drinking, and immediately noticed that Osaka felt completely different from the spotless, orderly cities we’d visited before.
But with each passing day, the city grew on us. We discovered incredible restaurants, quirky alleyways covered in neon lights, peaceful areas around Osaka Castle, and upscale neighborhoods like Umeda that felt like an entirely different city. Before long, we completely understood why so many people fall in love with Osaka.
If you’re wondering whether Osaka deserves a spot on your Japan itinerary, the answer is yes, but it’s important to know what to expect. Osaka is best known for its incredible food scene, lively nightlife, excellent shopping, and fun, energetic atmosphere. It’s also home to Universal Studios Japan and serves as one of the best bases for exploring the Kansai region, with easy access to destinations like Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe.
Unlike many other Japanese cities, Osaka is often described as being more laid-back, outgoing, and full of character. While it may not have as many historic temples as Kyoto or the endless skyscrapers of Tokyo, it offers a completely different side of Japan that many travelers end up loving.
🤔 Is Osaka Worth Visiting?
We think the answer is yes, but it really depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for. We spent almost a month in Japan, and had a good amount of time to dedicate to each city we went to. Other travelers might have just a week, and while it’s common to pack in a few cities into an itinerary, we don’t think that’s the best way to do a trip to Japan.
When it comes to shorter Japan itineraries, sometimes it’s better to simply choose between Kyoto or Osaka rather than trying to cram the both of them into your schedule.
If your dream is peaceful temples, quiet gardens, and traditional streets, you’ll probably enjoy Kyoto more. But if you love incredible food, lively nightlife, unique neighborhoods, shopping, and a city with loads of character, Osaka is absolutely worth visiting. It may not be love at first sight, but it’s one of those places that has a way of growing on you. By the end of our trip, it had become one of our favorite cities in Japan, and below are the biggest reasons why.

Osaka has a lot going for it, and the more time we spent exploring the city, the more we understood what makes it such a popular destination. Here are the experiences and characteristics that we think make Osaka worth adding to your Japan itinerary.

If we had to pick just one reason why Osaka is worth visiting, the food would probably be it. Before our trip, a friend who lives in Japan kept telling us that Osaka was a foodie destination, so we did a ton of research and also asked locals for recommendations. After spending about a week eating our way around the city over two trips, we totally got the hype.
What we loved most is that eating in Osaka is an experience in itself. You can spend the day wandering through markets, grabbing street food, sitting down for conveyor-belt sushi, or finding tiny restaurants tucked away in the city’s many alleyways. There are also plenty of fun food experiences, so you’re not limited to simply going out for a meal.
If you’re a serious foodie, we honestly think you could plan an entire trip around eating in Osaka. From our experience, it’s one of the biggest reasons to put Osaka on your Japan itinerary.

One thing that makes Osaka especially fun is that you don’t have to spend your entire trip visiting traditional attractions. It’s not just about sightseeing – but about all of the unique activities you get to experience.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Osaka is its location. You can stay in Osaka and easily take day trips throughout the Kansai region, including Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji.
We love this setup because you don’t necessarily have to pack up and change hotels every couple of days. You can explore somewhere new during the day and come back to Osaka for dinner, shopping, or nightlife.

🛍️ It’s One of the Best Shopping Cities in Japan
Osaka is a fantastic city for shopping, whether you’re looking for Japanese brands, souvenirs, food, beauty products, or just want to browse. There are huge department stores, shopping arcades, specialty shops, markets, and plenty of places to wander into that you could literally shop until you drop.
It’s also easy to combine shopping with the rest of your Osaka travel itinerary, since so many shopping areas are surrounded by restaurants, entertainment, and other things to do.
🌙 The Nightlife Is Incredible
Osaka is a fantastic destination if you like to stay out late. There are endless restaurants, bars, izakayas, karaoke spots, entertainment venues, and brightly lit streets to explore after dark.
We witnessed countless people passed out on the riverfront – a pretty good sign many of them had a pretty wild night. You can also find fun pub crawls and local nightlife events that bring locals to the best spots.
The city really came alive at night, and we just loved the energy there. If you love a good night out and nightlife is an important part of your travels, we’d definitely consider it an awesome reason to visit Osaka.
🏯 Modern and Historic Japan Blend Together Perfectly
One of the things we love about Osaka is that you don’t have to choose between modern Japan and its history. The city has huge modern shopping areas, skyscrapers, entertainment districts, and contemporary attractions, but you can also find historic sites and peaceful spaces.
The castle district is a perfect example of this contrast. After being surrounded by the energy of the city, walking through the grounds around Osaka Castle was so peaceful, especially in the morning when it was only the locals out.
🎢 Universal Studios Japan Is a Must for Theme Park Fans
So many people flock to Disney and Universal in Florida, meanwhile you could fly to Japan and spend less! It’s an excuse to enjoy iconic theme parks, and also to explore a new destination.
The park can easily take up an entire day and is home to some incredibly immersive themed areas and attractions. We’d take Universal in Japan over the US any day!
If you’re traveling with kids, this is one of the most fun things to do in Osaka, and an excellent reason to add this part of Japan to your bucket list.
🤝 The People Give Osaka a Completely Different Feel
While a lot of place felt oddly quiet or reserved in Japan, we loved that Osaka felt.a bit different. The city has a reputation for being more outgoing and humorous than some other parts of Japan, and we definitely noticed a totally different energy here than Tokyo, Nara, or Kyoto.
The city feels approachable and lively, and that personality comes through in everything from the way people interact to the atmosphere in restaurants and entertainment areas. It’s another reason why Osaka feels so different from other Japanese cities, and if you’re a loud, energetic person, you’ll actually fit right in here.
🌸 Every Neighborhood Feels Different
This is probably one of our favorite things about Osaka. The city doesn’t feel like one giant, uniform place. Each area has its own atmosphere, and exploring different neighborhoods can completely change your impression of the city.
You have the bright, chaotic energy of the entertainment districts, the peaceful atmosphere around the castle, and the much more upscale feeling of Kita and Umeda. You can spend one day feeling like you’re experiencing one version of Osaka and the next day discover an entirely different side of it.
That’s what makes Osaka worth visiting for us. It’s really a place that many different types of travelers can enjoy, making it great for groups that want to experience different things.

Osaka can be surprisingly affordable compared to other major Japanese cities, especially when it comes to food. There are plenty of casual restaurants, markets, street food, and reasonably priced accommodations, although shopping, nightlife, and higher-end dining can quickly increase your budget.
Is Osaka safe for tourists?
Yes, Osaka is generally considered a very safe city for tourists. As with any major city, you should use common sense, especially at night and in busy entertainment areas, but we never felt particularly unsafe while exploring Osaka.
Is Osaka tourist friendly?
Absolutely. Osaka is very accustomed to international visitors, particularly in the major tourist areas. Public transportation is easy to use, signs are commonly available in English, and there are plenty of restaurants, hotels, and attractions that cater to international travelers.
How many days do you need in Osaka?
We recommend spending at least 3 days in Osaka, although 4 to 5 days gives you more time to explore the city without rushing. If you also want to take day trips around Kansai, you could easily spend a week using Osaka as your base.
Is Osaka better than Tokyo?
That really depends on what you’re looking for. Tokyo is much larger and offers an enormous variety of neighborhoods, attractions, and experiences, while Osaka has a more relaxed, outgoing personality and is particularly famous for its food and nightlife. We wouldn’t say one is better, but they definitely offer different experiences.
Is Osaka better than Kyoto?
Again, it depends on your travel style. Kyoto is ideal if you’re looking for traditional Japan, temples, gardens, and historic neighborhoods, while Osaka is better suited to travelers who enjoy food, nightlife, shopping, and a more energetic city atmosphere. If you have enough time, we think visiting both is the best option.

Yes. Osaka can be a great destination for families, especially with attractions like Universal Studios Japan, interactive experiences, shopping, and plenty of family-friendly restaurants. It’s also convenient for day trips if you’re traveling with children.

Osaka is a great choice for solo travelers. There are plenty of things to do independently, public transportation makes getting around relatively easy, and the huge variety of restaurants means you won’t have trouble finding somewhere comfortable to eat alone.

We went as a couple and loved it! Couples can enjoy everything from food and shopping to nightlife, sightseeing, unique experiences, and day trips around Kansai. Osaka is particularly fun if you prefer a trip filled with activities rather than a quiet romantic getaway.
