The Best Things to Do in Socotra, Yemen
There are so many incredible things to do in Socotra that it can be hard to know where to start. The island is filled with completely different landscapes and experiences, from wandering through forests of Dragon Blood Trees to swimming in natural pools, exploring caves, camping on remote beaches, and meeting local families.
While tour companies have organized itineraries, it’s worth knowing what are the best places to see on the island so you can make sure your trip includes everything you’re interested in.

🌳 See the Famous Dragon Blood Trees & Bottle Trees
The landscapes are easily one of the biggest reasons to visit Socotra, and you’ll see something completely different throughout the island.
First and foremost, seeing the unusual trees is one of the biggest things to do in Socotra, and something that makes this island so unique.
Dragon Blood Trees are endemic to the island and are one of the main reasons Socotra has such a unique landscape. They’re light, delicate, and have red sap inside, which gives them their name. The bottle trees are equally rare, bulbous, and have a fascinating bottle-shape. They’re also incredibly beautiful in the springtime when they have pink flowers blooming!
While you’ll spot them throughout the island, there are a few places where you can really experience them.
🌳 Diksam Forest
If you’re looking for that epic “Socotra Island post card” shot, then Diksam Forest is just the place. You may have seen some Dragon Blood Trees here and there throughout your Socotra Island tour, but here’s where you’ll actually see hundreds of them!
The Dragon Blood Forest is the most iconic area of the island, and visiting there is definitely one of the top things to do in Socotra.
🌳 Firmihin
Firmihin is another great place to see Dragon Blood Trees, and is a popular place for camping. We loved this spot because we slept right next to some of the trees, and woke up to a gorgeous sunrise surrounded by these beauties.
🌳🌸 Homhil
While Homhil is known for its pool, the small path there and the entire drive leading up to it has both Dragon Blood Trees and Bottle Trees scattered all over it.

🏖️ Explore Socotra’s Incredible Beaches
Socotra has some of the most gorgeous beaches we’ve ever witnessed, with white sand, turquoise water, dunes, and mountains instead of the crowds and beach chairs you’ll find at many popular destinations. Exploring the beaches is definitely high on our list of things to do in Socotra, and it truly feels like no other place we’ve ever been.
🏝️ Qalansiyah
Qalansiya is one of the most stunning places in Socotra, with a gorgeous beach wrapping around the salt-water Detwah Lagoon. The landscape has everything from turquoise water and sand dunes to mountains rising behind the lagoon, making the views incredible from above and along the coast.
It’s also a great place to experience some local life. We saw kids fishing in the lagoon and met a group who invited us to play soccer, which made our visit there one of our favorite moments of our Socotra trip.
🌊 Arher Beach
Arher is one of the most beautiful beaches in Socotra, with a wide, flat stretch of sand and clear water. Across the road, massive sand dunes rise toward the mountains, creating an incredible contrast between the beach and desert-like landscape.
Climb up onto the dunes for the best views, especially at sunrise. Arher is also a popular camping spot, making it a great place to spend more time enjoying the landscape.
🚤 Shoab Beach
Shoab is arguably one of the most gorgeous beaches in the world, and one of our favorites on the entire island.
It’s super remote, and you need a boat to get there. The ride itself is part of the experience – we took a boat from Qalansiyah and sailed around the mountains, even spotting dolphins along the way!
When we arrived, we found a beautiful, completely empty stretch of beach with crystal-clear water, white sand, and mountains surrounding it. There is also a window cave there, which will give you fantastic views of the beach through the natural rock arch.
🚢 Delisha Beach
Delisha is another one of the coolest places in Socotra to visit. It’s located just outside Hadiboh, so is the perfect place to start or end your trip in Socotra.
While the beach itself isn’t nearly as impressive as the other beaches, it’s unique because it features a giant abandoned ship sitting along the beach. There are also nearby dunes overlooking the water, making this a beautiful place to spend the night.
🌊 Swim in Lagoons, Natural Pools & Wadis
If you’re looking for things to do in Socotra that involve getting into the water, there are plenty of options beyond the beaches. The island has salt-water lagoons, natural mountain pools, and beautiful wadis where you can swim and explore.
💧 Wadi Duhur
Wadi Duhur is a beautiful canyon filled with natural pools and small cascades surrounded by colorful rocks. We walked about 20 minutes farther into the canyon, stopping to swim in several different areas before heading back for lunch beside the water.
💦 Kilisan Canyon
If you’ve ever been to the wadis of Jordan or Oman, then Kilisan Canyon is definitely a place you’re going to love. After a 20-30 minute hike, we made it down to the canyon and spent a few hours exploring the small waterfalls, jumping off the cliffs, and swimming in the refreshing waters.
We even met another tour group, along with a group of guys from the mainland who were visiting Socotra for vacation.
Spending time here was definitely one of our favorite things to do in Socotra, and while the water was a bit greener than normal when we went, we still dream of going back.
🏞️ Natural Pool of Homhil
The Natural Pool of Homhil is one of the coolest swimming spots on the island, because it’s tucked away in the mountains and overlooks the sea. It’s about a 20-minute scenic walk to reach it, and the hike isn’t too demanding.
The waters are refreshing and the backdrop is breathtaking, making it a truly unique place to have on your Socotra itinerary.
💡 Look out for the dragon blood and bottle trees that are scattered across the area!
🐡 Detwah Lagoon
Remember when we mentioned Qalansiya hugging a lagoon? Well this is it! Detwah Lagoon is massive, and actually has a couple of areas worth exploring.
We first enjoyed the lagoon where it meets the beach, and had a few of the local kids sharing their fishing experience with us. Meanwhile, on the other side of the lagoon it’s deeper but also beaming with wildlife.
During our time there, we saw starfish, pufferfish, razor clams, and even massive turtles swimming nearby. The lagoon is also where we had one of our most memorable experiences with a local, which we’ll get into below.
🌊 Check Out the Landscapes of Dihamri
Dihamri is another beautiful coastal area, but rather than visiting for swimming, we loved it because of its dramatic rock formations and bright blue water. The combination of the red and pink rocks against the sea makes this a particularly incredible place to stop and explore before settling into the nearby campsite.
🐪 Roam the Zahak Sand Dunes
The sand dunes of Zahak almost make you feel like you’ve been transported to Morocco. The dunes are massive, so even when other tour groups are around, there’s plenty of space to wander around and enjoy the scenery. They’re especially beautiful around sunset, when the changing light brings out the different colors and textures in the sand.
🦇 Explore Socotra’s Caves
Socotra has some seriously impressive caves, and they’re another great way to experience the island’s unusual geology. Two of the caves we visited offer completely different experiences depending on how much hiking you want to do.
👀 Hoq Cave
Hoq Cave is one of the most popular cave experiences on the island, and getting there involves an hour-long hike that can be pretty hot and sweaty. Once you reach the entrance, you’ll find a massive natural window overlooking the sea, but the experience doesn’t stop there. Your guide can take you roughly a kilometer into the cave, where you’ll eventually reach a natural pool.
🪟 Degub Cave
Degub Cave is a much easier option if you don’t want to spend an hour hiking to reach a cave. After just a few minutes, you’ll arrive at the entrance and its incredible natural window facing the blue waters of Socotra.
🚤 Take a Boat Ride
As an island with crystal clear waters and extraordinary landscapes, experiencing it from the water is an absolute must.
We did our boat ride to Shoab Beach, since that’s the only way to reach there, but we’re sure there are also other opportunities to sail around Socotra if you’re looking for a different experience.

🤿 Go Snorkeling & Explore Marine Life
The water around Socotra is just as fascinating as everything you’ll find on land. Dihamri is one of the main places to go snorkeling, where you can get into the clear water and explore the marine life around the rocky coastline.
If you’re a serious diver, you might also be able to inquire with your guide about adding more experiences to your itinerary!
🌅 Watch the Sunrise & Sunset
Socotra has incredible sunrises and sunsets, especially when you have beaches, mountains, lagoons, and sand dunes all competing for the best view. We watched sunrise from the dunes around Qalansiyah and Arher, while Zahak was one of our favorite spots for sunset. Detwah Lagoon is another beautiful place to watch the sun disappear over the water.
⛺️ Go Camping in Socotra
If you’re visiting Socotra, don’t be thinking you’re going to sit at a resort. This is an adventure-packed island, and it’s one where we’d recommend completely skipping the hotels. (There are actually only a couple in Hadiboh, and they’re very basic).
Camping is a huge part of experiencing Socotra because so many of the island’s most beautiful places are far from traditional accommodations. We camped beside beaches, next to the lagoon, and around some of the island’s most dramatic landscapes, and waking up surrounded by that scenery was an experience in itself.
🌌 Try Astrophotography Under Socotra’s Dark Skies
Socotra has very little light pollution, which makes the night sky absolutely incredible. We were able to see the Milky Way with the naked eye, and the stars were already visible surprisingly early in the evening. Not only that, but we could see the entire moon when it wasn’t full!
If you’re into astrophotography, make sure to add your camera and tripod to your Socotra packing list, because camping around places like Arher and Dihamri gives you some amazing opportunities to photograph the stars. Even if you’re not taking photos, make sure you spend some time outside at night just looking up and admiring the gorgeous night skies.
👨🏽 Meet the Cave Man of Detwah Lagoon
One of the most unique experiences we had in Socotra was meeting Abdullah, who was born and raised in a cave overlooking Detwah Lagoon. We sat inside his cave, had freshly caught seafood and tea, and then joined him in the lagoon while he showed us the marine life and explained how he finds food.
We learned how to eat razor clams, saw tons of starfish and pufferfish, and even had massive turtles swimming nearby. We ended up spending the entire afternoon with him and watching the sunset over the lagoon before heading back out. It’s definitely one of the most memorable experiences we had on the island, and one of the most iconic things to do in Socotra.
🏘️ Explore Hadiboh
With so many incredible landscapes, the capital is certainly not the highlight of Socotra. However, we still think it’s absolutely worth a visit.
Hadiboh gives you insight into local life on the island, and allows you to really see the day to day lives of the locals. You can browse the small shops, stop into some of the restaurants, admire the windows they make, and explore the fish market.
🫶🏻 Interact With Locals
Some of our favorite memories from Socotra weren’t planned activities at all. We were invited by locals to sit down for tea, met children fishing around Qalansiyah, and even had a group of local kids invite us to play soccer with them on the beach.
If someone invites you to sit down for tea or chat, say yes! Visiting villages, talking with people, and being open to these spontaneous interactions gives you a completely different experience of Socotra beyond the famous landscapes.
Final Tips for Experiencing the Best Things to Do in Socotra
Socotra isn’t a destination where you simply check attractions off a list. Some of our best memories came from staying longer at places we loved, saying yes to spontaneous invitations from locals, waking up for sunrise, and spending our evenings outside under the stars.
