Choosing between the Azores or Madeira is not easy because both islands are incredible for different reasons! Here is everything you need to know to help you decide which one fits your travel style.
The Azores vs Madeira: Landscapes
The Azores feel incredibly green, with rolling fields, volcanic craters, and peaceful lakes that give the islands a calm and earthy atmosphere. The landscapes are soft, lush, and deeply connected to their volcanic origins, creating some of the most photogenic viewpoints in Portugal.
Madeira, on the other hand, is much more dramatic. The island is full of towering peaks, narrow ridges, and powerful waterfalls that drop through deep valleys. The scenery feels wild and vertical, and the cliffs and mountain ranges make Madeira one of the most striking islands in Europe.

The Azores are perfect for travelers who love outdoor adventures. Whale watching, natural hot springs, crater lake viewpoints, and volcanic swimming spots create a calm but adventurous rhythm. Each island has its own personality, and the activities feel authentic, relaxed, and closely connected to nature. Most hiking trails stay moderate and peaceful, making the Azores ideal for travelers who prefer slow exploration.
Madeira offers a much wider variety of activities and tends to feel faster paced. The island is famous for its structured levada trails, challenging ridge routes, and dramatic hikes like Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. The Azores have very unpredictable weather. It is common to experience sunshine, fog, wind, and rain all in a single day, and temperatures stay mild year round. The lush landscapes come from constant moisture, so expect quick weather changes, especially in higher altitudes.
Madeira also can be unreliable, but is more tropical. It is known as the island of eternal spring, with warm temperatures, (a bit) calmer winds, and far more sunshine. If you you're looking to swim a lot or to adventure outside the summer months, then Madeira typically wins this category.

Prices in the Azores and Madeira range greatly. We found food, ferries, hotels, and car rental prices to be a bit cheaper in Madeira, while tourist attractions and markets had higher prices than the Azores.
If you plan on island hopping, or visiting the Azores in the summer, then it will be a more expensive destination to explore. If you are going for a trip in the off season and sticking to one or two islands though, it can be a more budget-friendly option.

Azores vs Madeira: Getting There
If you are coming from the US, The Azores are easier and more ideal to reach, with direct flights from New York and Boston. If you would like to reach one of the smaller islands though (other than Terceira and Sao Miguel), you'll have to take another short flight, and these can add up quickly and be limited.
If you are coming from somewhere in Europe, then Madeira is a bit more accessible, since it is closer and has more cities connecting to it, especially outside of Portugal.

Azores vs Madeira: Getting Around
When it comes to getting around and accessibility, Madeira wins by a landslide. Madeira has fewer islands, and most tourists can simply stick to the main one and enjoy plenty of fun activities in Madeira for at least a week. Roads are well-paved and distances are short, making it really ideal for a road trip, and you can reach the other islands by ferry or organized tour.
The Azores are more spread out, and ferries only connect certain islands with one another. While you can also fly from one to another, prices can really add up fast, and the weather can make both flights and ferries easily delayed, rerouted, or cancelled.
All of the islands are best explored by car, and there are some islands in the Azores that don't have public transportation at all. Car rentals are also a bit cheaper in Madeira, although parking tends to be easier and more affordable in the Azores overall.
Azores vs Madeira: Food
When it comes to food, it's truly hard to choose whether we'd recommend the Azores or Madeira. Both archipelagos feature delicious grilled meats, fresh seafood, hearty soups, and local specialties that will delight any foodie out there. Madeira has more tropical fruits and juices, while the Azores have more local cheeses and unique desserts.
The Azores is known for its cozy taverns, while Madeira offers a wider range of both local and international flavors. The Azores has volcanic wine its famous for, while Madeira has its own special wine (similar to Port wine) and its signature drink Poncha, which is a standout favorite of ours.

If you're looking for some nightlife, then you should definitely consider Madeira over the Azores.
The Azores are very laid back, and the only island that has pretty decent nightlife is Sao Miguel.
On the other hand, Madeira's summers are full of parties and festivals, making it a fun destination for young, single travelers, or those traveling in groups wanting a a wild night out.

When it comes to safety, both the Azores and Madeira are great choices! Locals are friendly and welcoming, and there is very little crime, especially in the Azores.
Neither destination has a big hostel scene, so solo traveling is a bit tougher, but if you do base yourself in the bigger cities such as Funchal or Ponta Delgada and join tours you'll have more opportunities to meet other travelers.
