Basic Info for Visiting the Island of Gozo in Malta
Before getting into the logistics, let’s cover a few basics about the island of Gozo, including what makes it special, how long to stay, and where you’ll find it.
⭐️ What is the Island of Gozo Known For?
The island of Gozo is known for its beautiful coastline, traditional villages, historic landmarks, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s home to the impressive Citadel in Victoria, the prehistoric Ġgantija Temples, the dramatic cliffs of Dwejra, and a variety of beaches and swimming spots.
Gozo is also famous for its local food, particularly Gozitan ftira, ġbejniet cheese, fresh seafood, and traditional rabbit dishes. Compared with Malta’s main island, Gozo generally feels greener, quieter, and more rural, making it a great addition to a trip around the Maltese Islands.

🤔 Is the Island of Gozo Worth Visiting for Tourists?
Some of our favorite places we visited in Malta were on the island of Gozo! We think Gozo is worth visiting if you want to experience more than Malta’s main attractions. It has a wonderful mix of nature, history, beaches, and local culture, and it’s small enough to explore without needing a huge amount of time.
⏳ How Many Days in Gozo is Enough?
Gozo is a popular day trip from Malta, but we honestly think it deserves much more. Staying overnight gives you more time to explore the villages, enjoy dinner without rushing for the ferry, and visit popular spots outside the busiest hours. If you love beaches, coastal scenery, and getting off the main tourist trail, we’d recommend giving the island a little extra time.
2-3 would be perfect, but if you’re limited on time then we’d recommend spending at least one night there and 1-2 full days exploring.
📍 Where is the Island of Gozo Located?
Gozo is one of the Maltese Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, located just northwest of Malta’s main island. It is part of the country of Malta, which lies south of Sicily and north of the North African coast.
Although the two islands are close together, they have different atmospheres. Malta has a larger collection of cities, historical landmarks, and busy tourist areas, while Gozo is known for its rural landscapes, villages, and quieter coastline. The two are connected by ferry, so visiting both during the same trip is easy to organize.
Getting to the Island of Gozo
Getting to Gozo is pretty easy. Despite not having its own airport, it’s connected to the main island of Malta by a number of sailing options.

Gozo is a part of Malta, and the only way to get there is from the main island. This means that once you’re in Malta, you won’t have to worry about any additional documentation.
🛂 Visa Requirements for Malta
Malta is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area. This means that travelers visiting Gozo are subject to the same entry requirements and Schengen stay limits as those visiting Malta’s main island.
For many visa-exempt visitors, the standard short-stay rule allows up to 90 days within a rolling 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Time spent in other Schengen countries counts toward this allowance, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling around Europe before or after Malta.

Local Adjustments for Gozo Island
Traveling somewhere new always comes with a few differences from what you’re used to at home. Here are some practical things to know before visiting Gozo.
🗣️ What Language is Spoken on Gozo Island?
The official languages of Malta are Maltese and English. Maltese is the national language and is widely spoken throughout Gozo, while English is most commonly used in hotels, restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions.
English is actually starting to be heard more than Maltese sadly, but this does make visiting the island of Gozo and Malta in general particularly easy for tourists. Still, learning a few Maltese words can be a fun way to connect with locals.
💶 Currency Used in Gozo, Malta
Gozo uses the euro (€), just like the rest of Malta. If you’re traveling from another country in the Eurozone, you won’t need to exchange currency.
If you’re arriving with another currency, compare exchange rates and fees before withdrawing or exchanging money. ATMs are available around the island, particularly in Victoria and other larger villages.
🔌 Plug Type in Malta
Malta uses Type G plugs, the same three-pin plugs used in the United Kingdom. The standard electricity supply is 230V at 50Hz.
If you’re traveling from the United States, much of continental Europe, or another country that uses a different plug, you’ll need a suitable travel adapter. Also, make sure to check whether your electronics support 230V before plugging them in!
🚰 Can you Drink Tap Water in Gozo?
Tap water in Gozo is treated and considered safe to drink, although the taste can be different from what you’re used to because Malta relies heavily on desalinated water and groundwater.
If you don’t enjoy the taste, bottled water is widely available. We also recommend carrying a reusable water bottle, especially if you’re exploring the coastline or visiting during the hot summer months.
💸 How Much Do You Tip in Gozo?
Most people tip in Malta, and the standard for good service is 10%.
