Basic Info About Halloween in New York

Before diving into all the fun ways to celebrate Halloween, let’s cover a bit about the dates to keep in mind, and what exactly makes Halloween in New York so exciting.

🤔 Is Halloween a Good Time to Visit New York?

Halloween is one of the most underrated times to be in NYC, and arguably one of the best times of year to visit New York. October is the perfect month if you want to see the city all decorated, without having to be freezing or fight the crowds that come during Christmas in the city.

You’ll find decorated homes, themed cocktail bars, costume events, and seasonal attractions, alongside other fun things to do during fall in New York.

It’s also a beautiful time of year to explore the city, with fall foliage in the parks and plenty of seasonal food and events. Just keep in mind that popular attractions can get busy as Halloween approaches, so it’s worth booking anything with timed entry ahead of time.

🎃 When Is Halloween Celebrated in New York?

Halloween is celebrated every year on October 31st, but the festivities in New York begin well before then. Many homes start putting up decorations in late September, and you’ll generally find more elaborate displays appearing during the first two weeks of October.

If seeing the decorated houses is high on your list, the second half of October is usually a good time to visit. More displays should be finished by then, and the atmosphere gets even livelier as Halloween approaches. Some seasonal attractions and pumpkin experiences begin in September and continue into November.

The biggest events have their own schedules, and can vary a bit each year. The Village Halloween Parade takes place on Halloween night, while the Halloween Dog Parade and other neighborhood events are usually held on other dates in October. Always check the current year’s schedule before arranging your trip, since dates and venues can change!

Things to Do in New York City During Halloween

Halloween in New York is FULL of fun activities. Aside from the top tourist attractions in NYC, the city has really cool seasonal attractions, and particular things to do that are particularly incredibly this time of year.

🏠 See the Halloween Decorations on the Upper East Side

The Upper East Side is one of the best neighborhoods to explore if you want to see Halloween decorations in Manhattan. A lot of residents go all out, decorating their brownstones and front stoops with giant skeletons, pumpkins, cobwebs, witches, and elaborate spooky scenes.

The displays are spread throughout the neighborhood, so wear comfortable shoes and make an afternoon or evening of walking around.

👻 Explore the Halloween Decorations in Dyker Heights

Dyker Heights in Brooklyn is famous for having the best Christmas lights in NYC, but now more and more residents are decorating for Halloween too! You’ll find houses with oversized skeletons, creepy figures, pumpkins, and other spooky displays, with the decorations varying from year to year.

Like the Upper East Side, this is a residential neighborhood rather than a ticketed attraction. Plan some time to walk around, and remember that you’ll need to travel farther from Manhattan to get there. Visiting before sunset and staying into the evening gives you a chance to see the decorations in different lighting, although we particularly love these ones at dark.

🍸 Visit a Halloween-Themed Bar

New York has so many bars that embrace Halloween with spooky decorations, themed cocktails, and costume parties. Some are immersive pop-ups that only operate during the season, while others run year-round and put up decorations for the season.

Stay tuned for our upcoming guide of the best Halloween-themed bars in NYC to check out!

🐶 See the Halloween Dog Parade

The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is actually one of the most iconic events during Halloween in New York for locals. Held in the East Village, it brings together pups across the city dressed in creative costumes, from superheroes and movie characters to funny food-inspired outfits.

The parade usually takes place on a Saturday in October, rather than on Halloween itself. This year (2026), it’s being held on October 17th.

🎭 Attend the West Village Halloween Parade

The Village Halloween Parade is one of New York’s biggest Halloween traditions, and an absolute must if you want to experience a true New York Halloween.

Every October 31st, Greenwich Village fills with people in elaborate costumes, giant puppets, musicians, and performers. You can watch from the sidelines or you can actually jump in and be part of the fun!

It’s honestly one of my favorite Halloween traditions, and we also recommend exploring the West Village before or after since it’s a neighborhood full of great restaurants and bars.

🎃 Go Pumpkin Picking Outside NYC

Fall is pumpkin season, and going to a farm to pick out your own is a classic October activity. Many farms offer pumpkin picking, corn mazes, hayrides, seasonal treats, and other fall activities, with some adding haunted attractions as well.

A few farms are within the NYC area and are reachable by public transportation followed by a taxi or rideshare, but many are further out and deserve a day trip, and are much easier to visit with a car.

Some of our favorite farms are scattered throughout New Jersey or Connecticut, and can be paired with breweries or cideries. These can be a fun day trip if you want a break from the city and a taste of fall in the surrounding countryside.

🎭 See a Spooky Broadway Show

Seeing a Broadway show is a great way to spend an evening in NYC during Halloween, especially if you choose something with witches, supernatural twists, or a few good scares.

Whether you want a genuinely creepy night at the theater or a campy musical with a darker edge, there are several options to consider for a fun night of Broadway in New York during Halloween.

  • Paranormal Activity is a great pick for horror fans. Inspired by the hit film franchise, this supernatural thriller follows a couple who begin to suspect that something sinister is happening in their home. Expect suspense and scares rather than a traditional musical.
  • Wicked is ideal if you’d rather have witches, spells, and dark magic without the full-on horror. This popular musical tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda before Dorothy arrives in Oz. It’s more magical than scary, making it a fun option for families and anyone who prefers fantasy to horror.
  • The Rocky Horror Show is a cult musical packed with bizarre characters, mad scientists, outrageous costumes, and campy horror. It’s a particularly fun choice if you want something eccentric and theatrical for Halloween.
  • Little Shop of Horrors combines dark comedy, catchy songs, and a very unusual plant with an appetite for human blood. This Off-Broadway musical is a great option if you enjoy horror with plenty of humor.
  • Stranger Things: The First Shadow brings the supernatural world of Stranger Things to the stage. Set in Hawkins, the story explores the origins of the show’s dark mysteries, making it a good choice for fans of suspense, supernatural thrills, and theatrical effects.

💡 Broadway tickets can get expensive, especially around Halloween weekend, so book ahead if there’s a particular show you want to see.

🏚️ Visit a Haunted House

For something a little scarier, look for haunted houses and seasonal scare attractions around NYC and nearby New Jersey. These experiences can include dark mazes, live actors, horror-themed sets, and jump scares, with some attractions designed to be much more intense than others.

Many operate only on selected nights in October, and weekend tickets can sell out. Check the dates, age recommendations, and scare level before booking, especially if you’re traveling with kids or anyone who doesn’t enjoy horror.

🚗 Experience a Haunted Car Wash

If you’re looking for a unique Halloween experience outside NYC, the Screamline Haunted Car Wash in Rockaway, New Jersey, turns an ordinary car wash into a spooky adventure. Instead of walking through a haunted house, you stay inside your vehicle as you drive through a darkened wash tunnel filled with creepy characters and special effects.

The experience features live actors dressed as zombies and creepy clowns, fog machines, intense lighting, and animatronics. You can keep your doors locked or unlock them if you’re brave enough to get a closer scare! The attraction is recommended for ages 5 and older, and you can bring family, friends, and even pets along for the ride.

📆 Event details for 2026:

  • Location: Streamline Car Wash, 376 U.S. 46, Rockaway, NJ 07866.
  • Dates: Friday and Saturday nights through October 30th, 2026. The Halloween night schedule is still pending.
  • Hours: 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
  • Price: Approximately $40 to $43.14 per carload, including a full vehicle wash and hand dry.
  • Tickets: Online reservations are required, and tickets often sell out. Check the official Screamline Haunted Car Wash website or book through SimpleTix.

💡 Since this attraction is in New Jersey rather than NYC, you’ll need to plan transportation there and back. It’s a fun option if you’re renting a car or exploring other Halloween attractions outside the city.

🎃 Visit the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is one of the most iconic New York Halloween attractions, and one that we highly recommend. Thousands of carved and illuminated pumpkins are arranged into elaborate installations, making this a great option for photos and an evening out.

The event takes place at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, north of NYC, and usually runs on selected evenings from September into November.

You can also add on a speakeasy experience that includes a seasonal drink and treat, which my friend and I really enjoyed and recommend!

🪦 Take a Trip to Sleepy Hollow

Looking for a fun fall day trip from NYC? Sleepy Hollow is a town just up the Hudson that is a famous Halloween destination. It’s known for its giant cemetery, nearby historic manor, and cute downtown area. I also love the small bars with Halloween decorations, and it is nearby the Blaze so you can make a whole day or evening in the area.

🧙🏻 Experience the SUP Witches Festival

Need another reason to visit Sleepy Hollow? There’s an annual event that is truly unique, where hundred of people dress as witches and warlocks and paddle on the Hudson. You can enjoy the spectacle for just $8, or you can join in on the fun! The festival also has food, drinks, and entertainment, making it a full day for Halloween excitement.

🔪 Experience the Mind of a Serial Killer

If you’re into true crime, Mind of a Serial Killer is the perfect activity to add to your NYC itinerary. This immersive exhibition explores the psychology, crimes, and investigations behind 17 notorious serial killers, including Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and the BTK Killer.

The experience combines historical case files, timelines, recreated crime scenes, and physical displays to examine how these cases shaped criminal investigations.

You’ll also get to try a virtual reality investigation, where you step into a simulated crime scene, collect evidence, and look for clues to crack the case. The exhibition is designed to explore criminal profiling and forensic history, though be aware that some of the material and recreations are graphic or disturbing.

📸 Take a Picture at the Famous Pumpkin Arch

One of my favorite photos spots in NYC during fall is the iconic pumpkin arch they put up each year. It’s located in Lower Manhattan on Pier 17, and is equally beautiful to visit during the day as it is all lit up at night.

👻 Join a Ghost Tour

New York has plenty of ghost stories and dark history to uncover, and a ghost tour is a fun way to explore the city after dark during Halloween. Many tours take you through historic neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, sharing stories about reported hauntings, tragic events, and the people who supposedly never left. You’ll get a different perspective on familiar streets while learning about some of the city’s eerier history.

There are several options to choose from, including walking tours focused on haunted locations, paranormal legends, and the darker side of New York’s past. For example, Boroughs of the Dead offers themed tours in Manhattan and Brooklyn, while NY Ghosts runs nighttime walking tours through Greenwich Village. Some tours are available year-round, so you don’t necessarily have to visit on Halloween itself.

If you want to join one, book ahead for October, when spooky activities are especially popular. Wear comfortable shoes, as most experiences involve quite a bit of walking, and check the tour’s meeting point, duration, and age recommendations before reserving.

🕸️ Check Out Other Halloween Events in NYC

There are also plenty of smaller Halloween events around the city each year. The lineup changes, so check local listings for your travel dates rather than assuming every event returns on the same weekend.

Some things to look for include:

  • Halloween markets: Shop for seasonal treats, crafts, costumes, and gifts.
  • Costume parties: Bars, clubs, and event venues host themed nights throughout October.
  • Halloween festivals: Look for family-friendly activities, games, and costume contests in local parks and neighborhoods.
  • Spooky shows and immersive experiences: Special performances, horror screenings, and temporary Halloween pop-ups often appear during the season.

Now that you know all of the fun things to do around Halloween in New York, let’s help you prepare for the weather and with things to bring on your trip.

🌡️ What Is the Weather Like During Halloween in New York?

October typically starts off warm, and then significantly cools off throughout the month., Late October is usually cool, with mild afternoons and much colder mornings and evenings. Temperatures can change from day to day, and rain is common, so check the forecast before you leave.

If you’re planning to attend the parade or walk around neighborhoods after dark, bring an extra layer. Standing outside for a few hours can feel much colder than walking around during the day.

🧥 What Should You Wear for Halloween in New York?

Layers are the best option for Halloween in NYC. Jeans, a long-sleeved top, a sweater, and a jacket will usually give you enough flexibility to adjust throughout the day. I personally wear dress or skirts with boots and carry a heavier sweater or poncho with me and a pair of tights in case I get cold.

Comfortable walking shoes are one of the most important things to keep in mind, especially if you’re exploring the Upper East Side on foot, or have a heavier itinerary.

If you’re dressing up for a parade or party, think about how your costume will work in cooler weather. You may want to wear layers underneath or bring a coat that works well with your outfit.
