What to Know Before Enjoying the Fall Events in NYC
Fall is one of our favorite times to be in New York, but the city can feel completely different from September to November. September can still feel like summer, October usually brings some of the best walking weather of the year, and by November you’ll want to be prepared for colder temperatures.
Here is a little breakdown of what to expect each month, and some things to keep in mind when it comes to attending each event.
📆 When the Best Fall Events in NYC Are
Here’s a general idea of what you can expect throughout the season:
🎟️ Ticketing & Registration for Fall Events in NYC
A lot of the fall events in NYC are free, and ones you can simply show up for. However, others require advance tickets or reservations. For the bigger events, especially anything involving timed entry, Broadway tickets, or popular Halloween experiences, we recommend checking the official website before heading out.
It’s also important to know that for a lot of events in New York, there are restrictions on what you can and cannot bring. This can include camera limitations, age requirements, and whether or not somewhere is pet-friendly.
Make sure to check ticketing for fall events in NYC, along with rules and regulations which you can typically find in the FAQ sections of each activity’s website.

👀 Where to Find Fall Events in NYC
There are so many great fall events in NYC, and this is just the tip of the iceberg! While we worked hard to round up the best things happening this season, you’ll also be able to find smaller events and exhibitions going on across all five boroughs.
We typically find most of the events by using social media, and by looking on sites like Ticketmaster for concerts and shows, or Bucketlisters for themed parties and hosted activities.
Use this list as the base for some of the top fall events in New York, and if you’re a local with more time, we encourage you to dive deeper. We’re also sharing smaller events on our Instagram, so make sure to follow us there!

🎉 September Events in NYC
September is a great time to experience NYC before the temperatures drop. The city is still busy with outdoor events, but you’ll also start seeing fall festivals, cultural celebrations, and the first Halloween events popping up around the city.
🇩🇪 German-American Steuben Parade
The German-American Steuben Parade is an annual celebration of German-American heritage that takes over Fifth Avenue with marching bands, floats, traditional costumes, music, and plenty of German food and beer. We had the honor of working with them, and they even featured our german flag flying dress on one of their floats!
The parade is named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian military officer who served with the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Today, it’s a major celebration of German-American culture in New York and a fun way to experience one of the city’s many cultural traditions.
You don’t need a ticket to watch the parade, making it an easy fall event in NYC to add to a day exploring the Upper East Side.

Date: 3rd Saturday in September (September 19th, 2026)
Location: Fifth Avenue starting at 68th and ending at 86th
Learn More: Parade website
🍺 Oktoberfest Celebrations
You don’t have to celebrate Oktoberfest in Munich (although you totally should). If you can’t make it to Germany, you can still celebrate plenty in NYC! Once September rolls around, you’ll find German beer, food, music, and Oktoberfest celebrations happening at several different venues throughout New York.
Some are large outdoor celebrations, while others take place at German beer halls and restaurants around the city.
Here are some of the top Oktoberfest celebrations in NYC:

🌎 Climate Week in NYC
Climate Week NYC turns the city into a hub for sustainability, climate education, science, and environmental action. There are events happening all over NYC throughout the week, so whether you want to attend a panel, learn about climate science, explore sustainability through art, or join a hands-on activity, there are plenty of ways to participate.
Places like the New York Botanical Gardens and The Museum of Natural History have daily events, and you can explore all of the different options on the events page.
🇮🇹 Feast of San Gennaro
Every September Little Italy gets taken over by Italian food, music, parades, and street celebrations during the annual Feast of San Gennaro. If you love Italian food, this is one of the fall events in NYC we’d definitely put on your list!
The festival takes place over multiple days, with food vendors and events spread throughout Little Italy. One of the highlights is the Grand Procession, when the statue of San Gennaro is carried through the neighborhood in a large procession.
The 2026 celebration is particularly special because it marks the 100th annual Feast of San Gennaro!

Date: September 17th–27th (the Grand Procession is the 26th)
Location: Little Italy along Mulberry Street
Learn More: San Gennaro website
📚 Brooklyn Book Festival
The Brooklyn Book Festival brings together authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers for panels, conversations, book signings, and literary events throughout Brooklyn.
The festival includes a large Festival Day and Literary Marketplace at Brooklyn Borough Hall, along with Children’s Day, virtual programming, and Bookend events in locations across all five boroughs. In 2026, the main Festival Day takes place September 27th.
This is a great option if you want to add something cultural to your NYC itinerary that isn’t another museum or sightseeing stop.
Date: September 20th-28th (Festival Day on September 27th)
Location: Brooklyn Borough Hall (main events) + bookends in all boroughs
Learn More: Brooklyn Book Festival website
🇯🇵 JAPAN Fes
JAPAN Fes brings Japanese food, culture, entertainment, and vendors to neighborhoods throughout New York City each weekend. Rather than being one single festival in one location, JAPAN Fes has multiple dates throughout the year, so you can catch one during your fall trip depending on where you’re staying.
The 2026 schedule includes events throughout September, October, and November, with additional dates being added to the calendar throughout the year.
This is especially fun for food lovers because each event brings together vendors serving Japanese street food and other international flavors, along with cultural activities and performances.

Date: Every Saturday until November 14th
Location: Different location every week
Learn More: Japan Fes website
💡 Illumination NYC
For something a little different, Illumination NYC brings large-scale light art installations to Lower Manhattan. The outdoor festival features illuminated works by artists and turns the waterfront into a nighttime art experience. We actually just heard about this one, and were so bummed to just miss it!
This is such a cool event to pair with an evening exploring Battery Park City or the Financial District, and is completely free of charge to check out. The installations are meant to be experienced after dark, so you can make an entire evening out of it.
Date: Friday, September 18th- Sunday, September 19th
Location: Battery Park
Learn More: Illumination NYC website
🎭 NYC Broadway Week
If you’ve been wanting to see a Broadway show, keep an eye out for NYC Broadway Week. The semiannual program offers 2-for-1 tickets on participating Broadway shows, making it a great opportunity to catch a show while you’re in the city.
The fall 2026 edition runs September 8–20 and includes 25 participating shows.
Availability varies by show and performance date, so don’t wait until the last minute if there’s a particular production you want to see.
🎬 Fall Movie Nights at Hudson Yards
While Brooklyn Bridge Park and Bryant Park host free movie nights in the summer, the fun continues in Hudson Yards during the fall in NYC. Grab a seat or bring a blanket and settle in for a movie under the Manhattan skyline.
The 2026 fall schedule includes movies like RENT, Mean Girls, Chicago, Back to the Future, Wicked, Hairspray, and Beetlejuice on Friday evenings from September 18 through October 30. Complimentary popcorn is available while supplies last.

Dates: Fridays, September 18th–October 30th
Location: Public Square & Gardens at Hudson Yards
Learn More: Movies at Hudson Yards website
🎃 October Events in NYC
October is when the fall event calendar really goes into overdrive. This is the month for Halloween decorations, pumpkin festivals, costume events, haunted experiences, Comic Con, fall foliage, and some seriously creative ways to celebrate the season.
🎃 The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
If you want something truly unique, the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is one of the best activities for fell outside NYC.
The event features thousands of hand-carved illuminated pumpkins arranged into elaborate displays, creating a huge outdoor nighttime experience. They also have a fun speakeasy experience that includes a seasonal drink and treats, which I really enjoyed last year.
It takes place in the Hudson Valley rather than New York City itself, so you’ll need you can actually make a fun day trip out of it. Just remember to get your tickets in advance! They run on a time-slot basis.
⭐️ Tips for Experiencing The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
Date: September 18th–November 8th, 2026
Location: Croton-on-Hudson, New York

🎭 Village Halloween Parade
The Village Halloween Parade is one of the biggest Halloween traditions in New York City. Every October 31st, Greenwich Village fills with elaborate costumes, giant puppets, musicians, dancers, artists, and thousands of costumed participants. Experiencing the parade has been one of my favorite Halloween memories to date!
And the best part is, that you can actually participate. The parade is specifically designed as a public participatory event, but you must be in costume to march.
If you don’t want to march, you can watch from along the route. Either way, this is one of the most entertaining nights to be in Greenwich Village.
⭐️ Tips for Experiencing the Village Halloween Parade
Date: October 31st at 7 pm
Location: along Sixth Avenue from Spring Street toward 15th Street
Learn More: Parade website
🎃 Central Park Pumpkin Flotilla
Now, I don’t want to break your heart – but this year the pumpkin flotilla has been canceled. I’m still going to include it, as it’s been a tradition and hopefully it will come back in the future!
The Central Park Pumpkin Flotilla is an event where people decorate pumpkins and send them floating across the Harlem Meer.
It’s a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate Halloween without committing to a huge nighttime party. Bring your own carved pumpkin, enjoy the fall scenery in Central Park, and watch the illuminated pumpkins float across the water.
Date: Typically late October, but cancelled for 2026
Location: Harlem Meer, Central Park
Learn More: Pumpkin Flotilla website
🏝️ Pumpkin Point on Governors Island
Pumpkin Point turns Governors Island into a fall festival complete with pumpkins, costumes, trick-or-treating, and seasonal food. Visitors can pick out a pumpkin, and costumes are encouraged for the weekend’s trick-or-treating activities.
This is also a fun excuse to take the ferry over to Governors Island and enjoy the island itself while you’re there.
Date: October 24th-25th 10 am- 5 pm
Location: Nolan Park, Governors Island
Learn More: Governor’s Island website
🌳 Fall Events at the New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden is beautiful in the fall, but there’s much more happening here than just seeing the leaves change. Throughout the season, NYBG puts together a full lineup of fall events, from Halloween programming and pumpkin displays to beer festivals, workshops, classes, and activities for families.
This makes it a great place to visit even if you’re not specifically looking for fall foliage. You can spend a few hours exploring the Garden, then add one of the seasonal events happening during your visit.

🐶 Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade
This is quite possibly the cutest fall event in NYC. New York’s dogs get their own Halloween celebration at the Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade. Expect hundreds of dogs in costumes, from tiny superheroes to elaborate homemade creations.
You don’t need a dog to enjoy it (I know I certainly don’t). Spectators can watch the parade for free and see just how seriously New Yorkers take their pets’ Halloween costumes. The 2026 parade is scheduled for October 17.
🎭 Rocky Horror Picture Show
Fall is also a great time to catch a production or screening of The Rocky Horror Show. With its costumes, audience participation, and cult following, it fits perfectly into an October NYC itinerary.
Also, for special dates, Rosie O’Donnell is narrating – October 6th-18th.
Date: March 26th, 2026 – February 28th, 2027
Location: Studio 54 (254 West 54th Street, New York, NY)
Learn More: Rocky Horrow Show website
🍂 Fall Smorgasburg Markets
NYC has some incredible food markets, and if your idea of a fall activity involves eating your way through a bunch of different food vendors, don’t skip Smorgasburg. The outdoor food market continues through the fall at locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The 2026 season includes markets in Williamsburg, Prospect Park, and a new Central Park location, with dozens of vendors serving food from around the world.
It’s an especially easy fall event to combine with a neighborhood day since each location gives you a different part of NYC to explore.

Date: Weekends
Location: Central Park, Prospect Park,World Trade Center, & Williamsburg
Learn More: Smorgasburg website
🎮 New York Comic Con
New York Comic Con takes over the Javits Center every October with comics, anime, gaming, movies, TV, cosplay, panels, celebrity guests, artists, and plenty of exclusive merchandise.
If you’re into pop culture, this is much more than a convention floor. There are panels and screenings throughout the weekend, plus tons of people showing up in elaborate cosplay. The 2026 event takes place October 8–11 and marks NYCC’s 20th anniversary.
Tickets definitely tend to sell out, so this is one where you’ll want to plan ahead.
💀 Día de los Muertos Celebrations
After experiencing Dia de los Muertos in Oaxaca, it has seriously become one of my favorite holidays around the world.
If you can’t make it to Mexico, you can still celebrate though! There are several Día de los Muertos celebrations happening throughout NYC, giving you plenty of opportunities to experience Mexican traditions, food, music, and art during the holiday.

🏃🏻♀️ November Events in NYC
November brings some of NYC’s biggest annual traditions. The weather gets colder, but the event calendar doesn’t slow down. This is when you’ll find the NYC Marathon, comedy festivals, Día de los Muertos celebrations, and the massive Thanksgiving traditions that kick off the holiday season.
🏃🏻♀️ New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon is one of the biggest sporting events of the year and brings runners through all five boroughs before finishing in Central Park.
Even if you’re not running, it’s an incredible event to experience as a spectator. Different neighborhoods along the route have their own atmosphere, from huge crowds and music to quieter sections where you can really see the runners making their way through the city.
Date: 1st Sunday in November (November 1st, 2026)
Location: Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Ave between W. 35th & W. 36th St).
Learn More: NYC Marathon website
😂 New York Comedy Festival
If you’d rather spend your fall evenings laughing than freezing outside, the New York Comedy Festival is a fun one to add to your itinerary. The festival brings comedians to venues across all five boroughs, with stand-up, improv, sketch shows, conversations, live podcasts, and other comedy programming.
The 2026 festival runs just over a week, and features more than 200 comedians and 100+ shows throughout the city and outside of it.
The lineup changes every year, so check the schedule before booking your tickets.
Date: November 6th–15th, 2026
Location: The five boroughs and beyond

🦃 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the biggest fall events in NYC, and one of the most iconic things happening on the calendar. The traditional parade happens every year, and has been bringing giant balloons, floats, marching bands, performers, and Santa through Manhattan for generations.
2026 is a particularly big year because it marks the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade takes place on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026.
If you want to watch in person, plan ahead. Millions of people tune in from home, while huge crowds line the streets of Manhattan to see the parade in person.
