Things to Know About Visiting NYC in Fall
There are so many great things to do in fall in New York City. But first, let’s talk a bit about the season, and what you can expect overall.
🌤 Is Fall a Good Time to Go to NYC?
Fall is one of the most underrated times to visit New York City, and here is why.
The weather between September and October is so enjoyable. Temperatures typically range from the mid-50s to the low-70s Fahrenheit, which makes it perfect for walking, exploring neighborhoods, and spending time outdoors without the intense heat and humidity of summer, or the chilling cold of the winter.
Crowds are noticeably lighter than summer, which means shorter lines at popular attractions, easier restaurant reservations, and a more relaxed pace overall. Locals are back in town, making the city feel less touristy than other times of the year. Prices for flights and hotels also tend to be lower than peak summer season or NYC during the holidays, making fall a smart time to visit if you are looking to get more for your buck.

Things to Do in Fall in NYC
Now that you know what experiencing fall in New York is like, let’s explore all of the fun things to do in New York during fall!
🍁 Enjoy the Fall Foliage
The number one reason we love fall in New York is just how beautiful it is. While everyone is flocking to New England for their foliage, a lot of people don’t realize that there are actually so many great places to enjoy the changing colors right inside the city.
We particularly love Central Park, as it is one of the most stunning places to experience NYC’s fall foliage at its best.

💡 Central Park during fall is incredibly beautiful for a flying dress photoshoot!
🍂 Explore the New York Botanical Gardens
The New York Botanical Garden is beautiful in every season, but fall is when you get that incredible combination of colorful trees and seasonal programming that makes it worth a trip to the Bronx.
This is also where things get particularly fun toward Halloween. The garden’s fall programming can include everything from pumpkin displays to spooky experiences and evening light trails, so there are plenty of reasons to visit beyond simply seeing the foliage.
If you’re looking for a place where you can spend several hours outside while getting into the fall spirit, NYBG is a great option.
📸 Do a Flying Dress Photoshoot
Fall in NYC is the perfect time for a flying dress photoshoot. The mild weather, colorful leaves, and incredible backdrops make it one of the most photogenic times of year in the city, and the flowing dresses look absolutely gorgeous against foliage, waterfront skylines, and the Halloween decorations.

✨Book your photoshoot in advance as fall slots fill up quickly, especially on weekends!
🎃 Check Out NYC’s Halloween Decorations
One of our favorite things about October in New York isn’t even an official event. It’s seeing how much effort people put into decorating their homes.
Certain neighborhoods go absolutely wild for Halloween, and walking around to see the decorations is one of the best free things to do in fall in NYC.
Two areas particularly worth checking out are:

💡 There are also Dyker Heights tours that you can sign up for!
🍸 Visit Spooky Bars
Once October rolls around, New York City gets very into Halloween, and that includes its bars.
Spooky bars and Halloween pop-ups are a really fun way to experience the city during October, especially if you’re looking for something to do at night that isn’t another traditional sightseeing attraction. Some go all out with decorations, costumes, themed cocktails, and over-the-top interiors.
We love this because it combines two things NYC does exceptionally well: bars and going completely overboard for a holiday.

👻 We’ll be sharing more specific Halloween events and seasonal pop-ups in our upcoming guide to fall events in NYC.
👻 Go on a Ghost Tour
If spooky bars aren’t enough for you, take things a step further with a ghost tour.
New York has centuries of history, which means there are plenty of stories about haunted buildings, strange happenings, old cemeteries, and unexplained events. Fall, and especially October, is the perfect time to explore this side of the city.
You can find ghost tours throughout different neighborhoods, so this can also be a fun way to explore an area you might not otherwise visit.
🏙 Walk the High Line
The High Line is great year-round, but fall is an especially pleasant time to walk it.
The cooler weather makes the elevated park much more comfortable than it can be during the middle of summer, and the seasonal plants and changing light give the entire walk a different feel.
Start around Hudson Yards and make your way south toward Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. You can easily turn the walk into an afternoon by stopping for food, drinks, shopping, or one of the many attractions nearby.

💡 For a short time only there is a new art installation just above West Little 12th!
🚢 Take a Fall Boat Cruise
Being on the water in fall is genuinely one of the best ways to experience New York.
The temperatures are much more comfortable than the middle of summer, and the crisp air can make the skyline feel especially clear. You can choose from sightseeing cruises, sunset sails, dinner cruises, and plenty of other options depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Just bring a jacket. It can get surprisingly chilly once you’re out on the water!

⛴ Ride the NYC Ferry
Want to explore the city by water but want a more affordable alternative? Riding the NYC ferry is the city’s best kept secret, and also our favorite of all of the transportation options in New York.
For just slightly more than riding the subway in NYC you can hop on the ferry and have amazing views, fresh air, and less people. A plus is that you also might catch a glipmse of some foliage in the distance.

Here’s How to Get Around NYC Like a Local – It’s More Fun & Budget-Friendly!
Explore the city like never before – it’s fun, affordable, and there are more options for moving around than you probably thought.
☕️ Enjoy Afternoon Tea
Fall is also the perfect excuse to slow down for an afternoon and enjoy some afternoon tea.
Cozy up with tea, pastries, sandwiches, and a warm drink – the perfect activity for those chilly days. NYC has everything from classic hotel afternoon teas to more creative and themed experiences, like Tea Around Town – a bus that brings you around the city while having an afternoon tea experience.
It’s also a great rainy-day activity in NYC when you want to do something special without spending hours outside.

🏈 Go to a Football Game
Fall in NYC means football, and if you ask us, this is one of the biggest reasons to visit during the season.
Whether you’re catching a game in person or watching with locals at a sports bar, football brings a completely different energy to the city. The New York Giants and New York Jets both play nearby and there are also plenty of college football fans and bars showing games throughout the season.
Even if you aren’t normally a huge football person, experiencing a game is worth doing at least once.

🍻 Have a Sunday Funday
Speaking of football, one of our favorite things to do in NYC in fall is doing a little Sunday Funday.
Pick a neighborhood, find a few bars showing the games, and spend the entire day moving from one spot to another. Start with brunch, find somewhere for the early games, grab food and drinks as the afternoon goes on, and see where the day takes you.
This is less about having a strict itinerary and more about embracing the fact that you’re in New York and don’t have anywhere you need to be. Some of the best Sundays are the ones where you find a good bar, and enjoy the spirit of the game.

🎃 Enjoy Seasonal Events
Fall is one of the busiest times of year in New York City when it comes to seasonal events. From Halloween celebrations and pumpkin displays to festivals, markets, sports, and the city’s big November traditions, there is always something happening around the city.

🏛 Visit the Museums
Fall weather in NYC can be unpredictable, which actually makes it the perfect time to mix outdoor exploring with some incredible indoor culture. On rainy or cooler days, the city’s museum scene is right there waiting for you, and fall is actually a fantastic time to visit as the summer tourist rush has passed.
Fall in New York is ideal for balancing museum time with park time, and with some of the best institutions in the world a short subway ride away, you are never short of options.
Here are a few we would always recommend:
🎭 Catch a Broadway Show
Fall is a great time to catch a Broadway show, especially if you’re looking for something to do on a cooler evening.
The theater district is always buzzing, but there’s something particularly nice about spending the afternoon exploring Midtown, grabbing dinner, and then heading into a theater as the temperatures drop outside.
And if you’re visiting during Broadway Week (September 8th-20th), you may also be able to find special ticket offers for participating shows.
🥾 Go Hiking Outside NYC
One of the best parts about fall in New York is that you don’t actually have to stay in New York City.
Once the leaves start changing, it’s the perfect time to head outside the city for a hike. The Hudson Valley has some incredible trails, and the combination of cooler temperatures, colorful forests, and mountain views makes fall one of the best seasons to get out there.
You can make a full day of it by combining a hike with lunch, a brewery, winery, or a stop in one of the area’s charming towns. Just remember that popular trails can get extremely busy during peak foliage weekends.

🍎 Go Apple Picking
Apple picking is one of those classic fall activities that is perfect for when September rolls around.
There are plenty of farms within a reasonable distance of NYC where you can spend the day picking apples, grabbing cider and baked goods, and enjoying the fall scenery. It’s especially fun if you’re traveling with kids, but honestly, adults can have just as much fun.
This is another activity where having a car makes things much easier, and it pairs perfectly with a fall road trip through the Hudson Valley or surrounding areas.

🍷 Visit a Winery
Fall is one of the best times to visit the wineries outside NYC. The weather is cooler, the vineyards start changing colors, and many wineries have beautiful outdoor spaces where you can enjoy a glass while taking in the scenery.
The Hudson Valley is an easy option from the city, while Long Island’s North Fork is another fantastic choice if you’re willing to head east.
This is one of those activities where we highly recommend renting a car or arranging transportation rather than trying to make a complicated public transportation itinerary.

🍺 Spend a Day at a Brewery or Farm
Wineries aren’t the only places that shine in fall. Breweries, farms, cideries, and other rural spots around the city are also perfect for enjoying the season.
Many have outdoor seating, seasonal food, live music, fire pits, or fall activities happening throughout September and October. You can easily turn this into a full day outside the city, especially if you combine a few stops in the same area.
And if you’re someone who loves the idea of a cozy fall day but doesn’t necessarily want to spend it hiking, this is probably more your speed.

🚐 Take a Fall Day Trip From NYC
One of the best things about visiting NYC in fall is how many fun activities you can do outside of the city. The colors are vibrant, farms are booming, and there are fun halloween popups that are just a short trip away.
