🤩 Why Do Tourists Go to Azerbaijan?

Tourists typically visit Baku because it's a convenient city that offers a combination of modern and old. Azerbaijan is also known for some of its unique landscapes and medical tourism, and its location connecting Eastern Europe and the Middle East gives it an interesting blend of culture and cuisine.

👬 Is Azerbaijan Friendly to Tourists?

We loved the people of Azerbaijan! Every person we met was so friendly and welcoming. Also, unlike many other Muslim countries, religion and law don't mix, so people are totally free to dress as they please. It takes a lot of pressure off of tourists, especially women.

There is very little judgement in Azerbaijan, and overall locals are always willing to help tourists, even if they don't speak your language.

The Best Places to Visit in Azerbaijan

Now that you know a bit about why people visit Azerbaijan, let's dive into all of the top places to explore around the country.

🌃 The Best Places to Travel in Azerbaijan: Cities, Towns, & Villages

No visit to any country is complete without exploring the capital, cities, and small villages that make it up. Azerbaijan's settlements are what bring together its people, and allow you to immerse in the beautiful culture of the country. Here are the top cities, towns, and villages in Azerbaijan you won't want to miss out on.

🌃 Baku

Baku is one of the most unique capitals we have ever visited. It's one of the only capitals in Europe that feels more like the Middle East, and perfectly blends ancient history with modern architecture.

Most travelers start or end their trip in Baku, and it's certainly a city you'll want to save a day or two for. It's the most cosmopolitan destination in Azerbaijan, and truly feels different than the rest of the country.

🛍 Sheki

Next to Baku, Sheki is probably one of the most popular cities in Azerbaijan. Located all the way in the north close to Georgia's border, Skeki is a charming town which was a resting point of the silk road and is full of history and places to see.

Whether you're visiting the bustling markets, enjoying the architecture, or savoring the local cuisine, this is certainly a place you'll want to include on your Azerbaijan itinerary.

🍎 Quba

Quba is one of the most popular destinations in Azerbaijan, and with good reason! It's not only the gateway to some of the best mountains in the country, but it has plenty of cool things to see nearby such as lakes, waterfalls, and apple orchards, along with some fun things to see like mosques and carpet workshops.

We also had a really unique experience in Quba learning about apple cider vinegar production with the sweetest family. They also have a guesthouse with a farm, and the most delicious breakfast spread of homemade jams and other local goodies.

🏔 Laza (Mount Shahdagh)

Looking to explore one of the most beautiful villages in Azerbaijan? Laza is a true piece of paradise tucked away in the mountains, and will make you feel as if you've just teleported to Switzerland.

Visit the waterfalls, have a local barbecue lunch, or go on a hike around Mount Shahdagh. It's an amazing day trip from one of the nearby cities, or camping destination if you're feeling particularly adventurous.

🛖 Khinaliq

This remote village is known as one of the oldest and highest settlements in the Cacaucus region, and in all of Europe! It reminded us of one of our favorite places in Georgia, Ushguli, as well as a small town we visited in Bosnia called Lukomir.

It's a tiny town that will make you feel like you're back in time, where locals live off the land and take care of one another. Also, don't miss out on the hills surrounding it which offer stunning views of the village below!

🕌Shamakhi

Located just 120 km west of Baku, Shamakhi can be a great day trip from Baku, or a great stop on a road trip heading out towards some of the other best places to visit in Azerbaijan. It's known for its fabulo us mosque, and ironically as well as the wineries surrounding the town.

🧑🏻‍🏭 Lahich

This small village is the perfect place to soak up some of old traditions and local experiences in Central Azerbaijan. The town is known for its copper artisans, cobblestone streets, and its numerous museums making it an ideal place to enjoy for a half day trip.

🛀🏻 Naftalan

The city of Naftalan isn't necessarily a place you'll want to wander around for its charm. But if you're looking for one of the most unique things to experience in Azerbaijan, then this city is worth a visit.

Naftalan is known for its medical tourism, particularly its Naftalan oil baths. It's just as weird as it sounds, but if you're adventurous or have some medical issues you'd like to look into, then this should definitely be on your bucket list!

🏛 Ganja

Ganja is the gateway to some incredible nature in Azerbaijan, but the city itself is also well worth a visit! We particularly loved the Muslim cemetery, the house of recycled bottles, and Heydar Aliyev Park, which has an arch that resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

🌳 The Best Places to Travel in Azerbaijan: Unique Sites & Out in Nature

While we loved the cities and villages of Azerbaijan, what truly makes this country stand out is its incredible nature!

From colorfully striped hills and mud volcanoes to lakes tucked away in the mountains, Azerbaijan's natural landscapes are not to be missed out on, and here are some of the must-see spots.

🌄 Hacaqaya

Hacaqaya is a famous sacred site for Azerbaijanis, and although it's quite the hike, it really is a pretty cool gem of the country. The mountain is split in half, and has a staircase going right down through it, making it particularly magical during sunset.

We made it there late (because Google Maps does not disclose the correct location), so ended up going for sunrise and still loved the experience! There's just a short path to reach it (although also a pretty long and intense ride), and you'll notice picnic tables at the top of a hill facing it if you want to enjoy a snack with a view.

🌋 Gobustan Mud Volcanoes

Did you know that Azerbaijan has the highest amount of mud volcanoes in the world? The country has them all over, but the highest concentration is in Gobustan, which is one of the most popular day trips from Baku.

Bubbling mud pots you can swim in, and landscapes that will make you feel like you're on another planet make this one of the most unique and best places to visit in Azerbaijan.

🔥 Yanar Dag

Yanar Dag is not only one of the most unique destinations in Azerbaijan, but truly one of the things to add to your bucket list worldwide. The hillside just outside Baku has been on fire for centuries, and some even believe as long as 4,000 years! It's truly unlike anything you've seen, and a must-see while in Azerbaijan.

🌈 Candy Cane Mountains

If you're a photographer, then the Candy Cane Mountains have got to be on your list of places to visit in Azerbaijan. You'll feel like you've teleported to another planet, and if you have a drone you're truly in for a treat!

We went at sunset, and we're sure it's equally as cool at sunrise when the light makes the colors even more intense.

*Note: Please keep in mind we do edit our photos to bring out the feeling of being there. The colors will be less vibrant in person, but the wow factor is still there!

💕 Masazir Golu

Speaking of colorful landscapes - did you know that Azerbaijan also has a pink lake? You'll have to visit in summer (and preferably a bit earlier than sunset when we showed up), but the waters are pink, and it's just a quick trip outside of Baku!

🦙 Alpaca Azerbaijan

You'd never imagine you'd find alpacas in Azerbaijan, but there is in fact a farm where you can meet, feed, and play with these adorable animals.

🌾 Essenso Lavender Farm

If you're visiting Azerbaijan in the summer months, then don't miss the opportunity to see the lavender in full bloom! We visited in mid-July so were a bit late, but if you catch the beginning of the month or end of June you'll be greeted with fields of purple.

Essenso Lavender Farm is located just west of Qabala, and they have adorable doors and other probs for taking fun photos in the fields, drinks, snacks, music, and tractor rides. We also got to see sunflower fields which was a plus!
