Direct flights connect the islands to Portugal, North America, and other parts of Europe, making it surprisingly easy to reach this tropical-feeling corner of the Atlantic. São Miguel is the largest island and the main entry point for most travelers, but travelers can also fly to any of the islands.

Before visiting the Azores, it helps to understand how to get there, how to move between the islands, and what to expect when planning logistics. Transportation can be a bit different here than in mainland Europe, so these Azores travel tips will help make your trip smooth and stress free.
Azores Travel Tips: Getting There
Getting to the Azores is easier than you might think, but it still requires some planning. Most travelers fly into São Miguel Island, the main hub of the archipelago, and then continue to the other islands by plane or ferry. However, we're going to share some tips to optimize your travels.
1. You Don't Have to Fly to Sao Miguel
Most websites tell you to begin your Azores travels in Sao Miguel, the most well-connected island. However, it's important to know that if you're looking to island hop, Sao Miguel may not actually be your best option.
While Sao Miguel certainly has the most flights, it's actually extremely limited by ferry. If you're wanting to explore the central group of islands, consider flying to Terceira instead. You can even fly direct flights from the US!

2. You Should Book Flights in Advance
Azores Airlines (SATA) operates direct flights from several cities in Europe and North America, including Boston, New York, and Toronto. Seats can fill up quickly, especially in summer, so booking early will score you better prices and availability.
We grabbed ours a few months out and got super affordable flights! They're more affordable than the mainland oftentimes, and make for a great first entry point into Europe.
Flight Tip: Using Skyscanner you can put from "your city" to "Portugal". This way you can see which is the cheapest airport in the Azores to fly to. Also, you can check the calendar to see which are the cheapest dates for each one!

Azores Travel Tips: Building Your Trip
Each island in the Azores has its own charm, and which ones you choose depends on your interests. Some are easy to explore in a few days, while others deserve a full week.
Here are some Azores travel tips to help you build the ultimate itinerary.
3. Choose Your Itinerary in Advance
When we first planned our trip to the Azores, we had the idea that we'd being island hopping and seeing all of the islands in the archipelago. The truth is, this requires a lot more planning than we thought! Ferries and flights don't connect all of the islands, and there is limited availability amongst the islands.
Research each of the islands depending on your preferences, and then try to organize flights and ferries accordingly.
4. Give Yourself Enough Time
When we initially checked out the islands, they all looked really small, so we kind of assumed we'd be able to just hop from island to island 1-2 each. Well, even the islands that look tiny have plenty to offer, and you'll certainly need more time than you might have originally thought.
We planned 1 day on Terceira, and ended up spending an entire week there! This was more-so due to lack of travel options, but we found plenty to do to keep us busy. The longer we spent, the more we loved the island.
Additionally, the weather can be super crazy in the Azores, and while it may look nice out, you might drive somewhere to find yourself in a complete bed of clouds. We went to some places two or three times to enjoy the best viewpoints in Terceira, or to get on a whale watching tour. The Azores are relaxed, so the more time you have, the better!
5. Give Yourself Buffer Time for Each Island
The weather can make flights and ferries get rerouted quite often in the Azores, so having back to back transportation is a big no-no! Our first flight to the Azores from the US couldn't land due to the dense clouds, and we ended up having to land in Lisbon (and having to do customs there), delaying our arrival for a full day!
We ended up missing our next flight out of Sao Miguel, and it was a true lesson learned. We recommend giving yourself a full day or two between travel times, so that you don't have a domino-effect of catastrophes.
6. Invest in Travel Insurance
Having travel insurance will save you in case of any big delays! Whether it be with transportation or accommodation, having that coverage will make a big difference in case something goes wrong (which is not uncommon).
We use Safety Wing because they're easy to work with and affordable. They cater very well to all types of travelers, but are particularly great if you're working and traveling as a digital nomad.
7. Communicate with Your Hotel and Car Rental
As delays are quite common, one of our top Azores travel tips is to keep the info handy of your accommodation and car rental company (if you have one). Locals are very understanding and aware of frequent flight delays and changes, and may be willing to work with you if you're proactive.
Reach out with your flight info ahead of time, and make sure you have a contact that is reliable in case something happens.
Azores Travel Tips: Moving Around
Now that you know how to plan your trip to the Azores, let's move onto our next set of Azores travel tips - helping you navigate the archipelago, and inside each island you plan on visiting.
8. Book Ferries to Explore Within Specific Island Groups
There are 9 different islands in the Azores, and they are organized into three different groups. Ferries DO NOT connect all islands, and you can actually only get ferries WITHIN each island group.
For example, Flores and Corvo are part on one island group, and they only have ferries to one another. This means that if you want to visit one of those islands from elsewhere, you'll have to book a flight. Definitely make use of the ferries to travel, but plan in advance! They can be great, but they're also very limited.
Everyone talks about having Sao Miguel as a base, but the reality is that NO ferries service Sao Miguel, and the best island group to travel by ferry is the central group, which includes the islands of Pico, Faial, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, and Terceira.

9. Don't Plan for Many Day Trips
We've mentioned that you should always give yourself a buffer, but it's also important to note that day trips are not only difficult to do, but hardly exist.
Ferries are on a specific route, and they do not return to the island they came from the same day. This means day trips by ferry are impossible for most islands (with the exception of a small window between Flores and Corvo).
Day trips by flight are pricey, and also aren't super reliable, which is another reason you'll need to plan at least a few days on each island.
Really short on time? Taking these day trips from Flores to Corvo will allow you to visit a larger window of time without any stress or hassle:
10. Rent a Car to Explore the Islands
The best way to explore each island in the Azores by driving, so we highly recommend renting a car. Public transportation is limited, and driving will give you flexibility in your schedule, and the opportunity to explore off the beaten path.

11. Reserve your Rental Early
Car rentals often sell out in peak months, especially on smaller islands like Pico or Flores. Book online ahead of time for the best prices and availability!
12. Stick to a Car on Each Island
When we first booked our trip to the Azores, we booked our car rental for 9 days, and planned on taking the car on the ferry. In theory, this sounded great! The problem? Only 10 cars fit on each one, and they sell out MONTHS in advance! That meant we paid for our car rental and then couldn't leave the island.
Alternatively, you can book your entire itinerary by ferry in the central group of islands, and book your car on each one. This can save you money on your overall rental price. HOWEVER, it's really risky. In case of any cancellations, you might end up not being able to bring your car at all.
Skip the hassle and just book your car rentals separately. But do so after you've already booked your flights or ferries!
13. Download Offline Maps
Cell service isn't always super reliable in the Azores, particularly in remote areas. Download offline maps so that you don't get stuck without a working GPS.
14. Inter-island Flights are Fast but Limited - Plan Accordingly!
The nine islands are connected by short flights that usually take 30 to 50 minutes. However, not every route runs daily, so plan your itinerary around available flight times or combine flights with ferries for flexibility. Remember, if you want to visit different island groups, you'll need to fly from one to the next.

15. Visit in Spring for Whale Watching
From March through June, migrating species like blue whales and humpbacks pass through Azorean waters. Local tours offer respectful and eco-friendly ways to see them up close, and it's one of the highlights of visiting the archipelago!
The weather in spring can be hit or miss, but if you're looking for fun and ethical animal encounters, then Spring may be the time to visit for you. We went with Ocean Emotion on Terceira island in June and had such a great experience!
Sao Miguel, Terceira, and Faial all offer whale watching, but the best island is Pico!

16. The Best Time to Visit the Azores is in the Summer
While Spring brings dolphins, it also can bring pretty unpredictable weather. If you're looking for sunny days and beautiful hydrangeas in bloom, then the best time to visit the Azores is going to be from late June through August.
This is when temperatures are warm, ferries run more frequently, and hiking trails are in their best condition. It’s also when the islands are at their most colorful, with hydrangeas and wildflowers in full bloom.
Ferry services between the islands are also more frequent from May through September, operated by Atlânticoline. In winter, service is reduced or suspended on some routes, so always check the schedule before traveling.
In June the hydrangeas are just beginning to bloom!
17. Expect Four Seasons in a Day
Weather in the Azores can shift from sunny to rainy and back within an hour, and even vary each mile you drive! Always pack layers and waterproof gear, even in summer, to stay comfortable while exploring outdoors.

Packing smart makes a big difference here, since the islands’ microclimates mean you’ll likely experience both sunshine and rain on the same day. Here are some Azores travel tips for making sure you're packed properly without overdoing it.
18. Restrict Yourself to a Carry On
If you want to visit a few islands then you'll most certainly be taking some flights. Luckily Sata Azores Airlines includes both a carry on and personal item for flights. Limit yourself to these and you won't have to worry about paying for a checked bag. It will also make moving around a lot more comfortable!
19. Bring Waterproof Clothing
Rain showers can appear suddenly, even on sunny days. A lightweight rain jacket or poncho will keep you comfortable while hiking or sightseeing, and will ensure you don't have wet clothes to try and dry out (spoiler - air drying clothes isn't as easy there!).
20. Include a Swimsuit
From natural pools and hot springs to waterfalls, you’ll want to swim almost every day, no matter what season you're visiting. Many beaches have volcanic rock formations rather than sand, so water shoes can also be helpful.
21. Pack Comfortable Shoes
You can leave the heels at home. The Azores are very laid back, and many of the top activities include walking and the outdoors. Many of the trails are steep and muddy, so sturdy footwear is essential. Waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes will make exploring much easier. (I learned the hard way in my flip flops!).
22. Don't Forget a Power Adapter
The Azores use the same Type F plug as mainland Portugal (230V). Bring an adapter if your electronics use a different plug type. (If you are from the US you will need one).
23. Bring a Drone!
One of our top Azores travel tips is to bring some serious camera gear! The landscapes are stunning, and the views from above are surreal. Winds can be strong, so we do recommend opting for the Mavic Pro to play it safe.

Nature is what makes the Azores so special, and protecting it is part of every visitor’s responsibility. Here are some travel tips for the Azores to make sure you're being responsible and respectful.
24. Respect the Trails and Environment
Many areas are part of protected reserves, so always stay on marked paths and never pick flowers or plants. The Azores are proud of their eco-friendly image, and visitors play a big part in keeping it that way.
25. Beware of Livestock
The islands of the Azores have lots of livestock! It's actually the only form of traffic we experienced, and can happen at anytime, so drive slowly and stay attentive!
26. Visit Viewpoints on Clear Days
Fog rolls in quickly in the mountains, so check webcams or weather apps before visiting popular miradouros. Lagoa do Fogo and Sete Cidades are especially worth timing for good visibility, so if it looks like it's a clear day, make a run for it to enjoy the viewpoints!

The food in the Azores is fresh, simple, and delicious. Meals often feature local seafood, grass-fed beef, and produce grown in volcanic soil.
27. Try Cozido Das Furnas
This traditional stew is cooked underground using geothermal heat in the village of Furnas on São Miguel. It’s a one-of-a-kind meal that you can watch being unearthed before lunch.

31. Learn a few Portuguese Words

To truly experience the Azores, give yourself enough time to visit more than one island. A week lets you combine 2-3 islands, and if you stay closer to two weeks you'll have the opportunity to see even more!
