Getting around Madrid is something we know extremely well, because I actually lived in Madrid for two years teaching English, and another 4 months studying abroad. I experienced the city from several different neighborhoods, and also wasn’t just visiting the main tourist areas either. I lived in a few different areas of the city, and used Madrid’s transportation system to get to class, work, meet friends, explore different parts of the city, and get around as part of everyday life.
I’ve walked all over the center, taken the metro more times than I can count, used buses when I lived farther out, hopped on the Renfe Cercanías, and taken trains for trips outside the city. After living there, I can confidently say that Madrid is one of the easiest and enjoyable European capitals to navigate, especially once you understand how the different transportation options work.

🏘 Getting Around Madrid by Foot
Getting around Madrid on foot is my personal favorite, particularly if you’re staying in the city center. Many of the main attractions are close together, and walking is one of the best ways to explore the different neighborhoods and stumble across places you wouldn’t necessarily see from public transportation.
We recommend taking a free walking tour in Madrid when you arrive, so that you can get your bearings and learn about some of the top attractions in the city.
🚇 Getting Around Madrid by Public Transportation
Madrid has an excellent public transportation system, and it’s also incredibly affordable. The metro, buses, and Renfe Cercanías make it easy to get around the city without needing a car.
Madrid also has discounted 10-ticket passes, which can be a great option if you’re planning to use public transportation several times during your trip. Just keep in mind that there is an additional surcharge when traveling to or from the airport.
Ⓜ️ Taking the Metro in Madrid
The Metro is the best way for getting around Madrid in our opinion. It’s clean, affordable, and incredibly easy to navigate, with each line identified by both a number and a color.
Having lived in Madrid for two years, I used the metro constantly, and I actually find it much easier to navigate than the NYC subway. Once you understand the lines, you can get pretty much anywhere you need to go.
🚌 Public Buses in Madrid
Madrid also has an extensive bus system, although I personally used buses much more when I was living on the outskirts of the city. If you’re staying in the center, you’ll probably find the metro more convenient for most trips.
🚆 Trains in Madrid
The Renfe Cercanías is the commuter train system and is particularly useful for getting between major hubs like Sol and Atocha. It’s also a great option when you’re traveling to areas outside the immediate city center.
For day trips, the high-speed Renfe trains are one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get out of Madrid.
🚕 Getting Around Madrid by Taxi & Rideshare
Taxis are definitely an option in Madrid, but honestly, we don’t recommend them unless you have a specific reason to use one. They’re more expensive and completely unnecessary when you have such great public transportation.
Uber is a slightly better option, but we still wouldn’t use it as our main form of transportation around the city.
💡 Always use official taxis or book through an app to avoid scams.
🚗 Getting Around Madrid by Car
You absolutely don’t need a rental car for getting around Madrid. The public transportation system is so good that having a car in the city would be more of a hassle than a benefit.
A rental car can be useful for day trips outside of Madrid, especially if you’re visiting places that aren’t as convenient to reach by train.
🚲 Getting Around Madrid by Bikes
Madrid is also a fun city to explore by bike, whether you want to rent one for the day or join a bike tour. It’s a great way to cover more ground while still being outside and actually seeing the city.

If you don’t want to deal with logistics, guided tours are a great option, and there certainly is no shortage of them in Madrid.
From city highlights to day trips outside Madrid, tours take care of transportation and help you make the most of your time.
They’re especially helpful if you’re on a shorter trip and want to see a lot without having to plan every detail.

Sol is our favorite area to stay for getting around Madrid because it’s right in the center and well connected. Gran Via and Callao are great for being close to major attractions, while Malasaña and La Latina offer a more local feel while still being close to the action.

We definitely recommend walking as much as you can, and then taking the metro for crossing the city. Cercanias is also great if you need express rides between major stations, like Atocha or Sol.
