Socotra, Yemen was one of the most exotic and exciting places we have ever traveled to, and it completely changed the way we think about what we actually need while traveling. Between the unreal landscapes, incredible night skies, welcoming people, and feeling like we were on another planet, this trip was unlike anything we had experienced before.
But we also want to be very clear about something: Socotra is definitely not for everyone. This is an extremely remote destination, getting there takes time, you’ll have very little flexibility with flights, and you need to be comfortable with camping, limited electricity, little cell service, and some serious disconnecting from modern conveniences. For us, those things were actually part of what made the trip so special.
So, is Socotra worth visiting? For us, absolutely. But whether it’s worth visiting for you depends on what you want from a trip. Socotra is best known for its otherworldly landscapes, unique plant life, remote beaches, and the famous dragon blood trees that grow across the island. The scenery can look almost unreal, with massive sand dunes, limestone formations, turquoise waters, mountains, and landscapes that seem completely different from one another.
The island is also known for being incredibly remote and relatively untouched by mass tourism. When we visited, one of the things we loved most was how quiet it felt. There weren’t crowds of tourists everywhere, and in many places it felt like we had the entire landscape to ourselves.
For photographers, this is an absolute dream. Between the unusual landscapes, unique vegetation, clear skies, and lack of light pollution, there is something incredible to photograph practically everywhere you look.

We absolutely love Socotra, and think it’s worth visiting, but we also recognize it’s not a destination we’d recommend for just anyone. We had such an enjoyable trip, and Socotra surprised us in all of the best ways.
While there are certain things that could be more ideal, the pros heavily outweighed the cons for us. We’re going to share all of the reasons Socotra is worth visiting, along with some things that should be considered before booking your trip.
Is Socotra Worth Visiting? Here are the 8 Reasons We Think it is
First, let’s dive into all of the things that make Socotra a great travel destination!
🏜️ 1. The Landscapes Are Unreal
Socotra’s landscapes are probably the biggest reason we think it deserves a spot on an adventurous traveler’s bucket list. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the island, and it can genuinely feel like you’ve left Earth and landed on another planet.
You can go from beaches and turquoise water to towering sand dunes, mountains, caves, limestone landscapes, and forests of dragon blood trees. There is so much variety packed onto one remote island.
If you want a destination where the scenery itself is the main attraction, Socotra is the exact place you’re looking for.
🌌 2. The Night Skies Are Incredible
One of our favorite things about Socotra was being able to experience the night sky without all of the light pollution you get in cities and more developed destinations.
Because the island is so remote, nights can be incredibly dark, making the stars absolutely incredible. Honestly it was the first time I ever saw the dark side of the moon so clearly. If you enjoy astrophotography or simply sitting outside and looking up at the sky, Socotra gives you an experience that is becoming harder and harder to find.
And honestly, there’s something pretty special about camping somewhere remote, looking up, and seeing a sky filled with stars without the glow of a city nearby.
📸 3. It’s a Photographer’s Dream
If you love photography, Socotra is going to give you everything you’ve ever dreamed of. The landscapes are completely unlike what you’ll find in most other destinations, from the famous dragon blood trees to massive dunes, dramatic mountains, beaches, caves, and unusual rock formations.
Even better, you’re not constantly trying to photograph around huge crowds of tourists. The island is quiet, and there are plenty of moments where you can simply stop and take in the scenery.
We honestly felt like we could pull out our camera almost anywhere and find something incredible to photograph. We took thousands of pictures in Socotra, and never got sick of it.
🤫 4. It’s Quiet and Far From Mass Tourism
One of the biggest things we loved about Socotra was how quiet it was. You aren’t dealing with the crowds, huge tour groups, or endless lines that you find at many popular destinations around the world.
Tourism is still relatively limited, which means you can experience the island without feeling like you’re constantly surrounded by other travelers.
Of course, the lack of tourism also means there aren’t the same conveniences you may expect elsewhere. But if you’d rather have an authentic, peaceful experience than a destination built around tourism, this this is a major advantage.
🏕️ 5. It’s the Perfect Place to Disconnect
Socotra makes you realize just how many modern conveniences we’ve become accustomed to. There isn’t constant cell service, electricity isn’t something you can take for granted, and you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.
At first, that can feel strange. After a while, though, it becomes one of the best parts of the experience. We saw kids simply running around with a ball. Not a single one had electronics, and actually there weren’t really any toys or anything either. They all looked SO happy, and it was refreshing to see children having a real childhood.
As a couple that is working while traveling, we actually appreciated being forced to disconnect. Instead of constantly checking our phones, answering messages, or worrying about what’s happening online, we were able to spend our days exploring, eating fresh food, talking with locals, photographing the scenery, and enjoying the destination itself.
🫶🏻 6. The People Are Incredibly Welcoming
The people we met in Socotra were incredibly kind, welcoming, and friendly. Despite how remote the island is, we felt genuinely welcomed throughout our time there.
Meeting local people and getting a glimpse into everyday life was also an important part of what made the trip feel so different from a typical vacation, and every interaction felt incredibly special.
When you’re somewhere that hasn’t been shaped around mass tourism, interactions with locals can feel much more personal, and that was definitely something we appreciated during our time in Socotra.
🐟 7. The Food Is Fresh and Local
Socotra’s food scene isn’t about trendy restaurants or endless choices. Instead, you’re eating incredibly fresh, simple food, and the seafood is a major highlight of it.
Fish is caught daily, so if you love seafood, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to eat incredibly fresh fish during your trip.
This is also an important thing to keep in mind if you have dietary restrictions. Vegetarians may have a much harder time here because food options are limited, especially compared with destinations where vegetarian restaurants and alternative meals are readily available.
🧭 8. It’s a Completely Different Type of Trip
Socotra isn’t the kind of destination you visit because you want a relaxing week at a resort with everything organized around you. It’s an adventure.
You’ll be camping, driving around remote areas, dealing with limited infrastructure, and experiencing places that still feel incredibly wild. Nowhere else can you meet a man living in a cave, go fishing with your bare hands, or find yourself in a field of dragon blood trees.
We love finding travel dupes around the world, but Socotra is a destination that truly can’t be replicated. If you love traveling somewhere that feels genuinely different from what you’re used to, Socotra is hard to beat.
What Are the Downsides of Visiting Socotra?
We don’t want this article to make Socotra sound perfect, because it definitely isn’t. In fact, some of the things we loved most about the island are exactly what other travelers may find frustrating.
💰 1. Socotra Is a Little Expensive
Getting to Socotra and organizing a trip there can be expensive, especially compared with other destinations where you can independently book inexpensive flights, accommodation, and transportation.
While the island itself is cheap once you’re there, the expensive part is the flights, visas, and moving around the island. You’re paying for the logistics of getting to an extremely remote island, as well as the arrangements needed to actually travel around it.
If you’re looking for a cheap vacation, Socotra probably isn’t the destination for you. That being said, we do believe that it is worth every single penny.
✈️ 2. It Takes Time and Planning to Get There
Socotra is not somewhere you can casually add to a Middle East itinerary at the last minute. Getting there takes time, and there are very limited flight options.
That also means you need to plan around the available flights rather than simply choosing whatever travel dates work best for you. Flights only go to Socotra from Jeddah and mainland Yemen. We went via Abu Dhabi, but those are no longer running. With limited flights, there is certainly an extra layer of planning that is involved with visiting Socotra.
For us, the effort was worth it. But you need to be comfortable with the fact that getting to Socotra is part of the adventure.

🗓️ 3. There Is Very Little Flexibility
Flights go into and out of Socotra only a handful of times per month.
Because flights are limited, you don’t have the same flexibility you would have in a more accessible destination. If you decide you want to stay an extra few days, change your itinerary, or leave early, you can’t necessarily just book another flight.
Your itinerary needs to be planned around the logistics of the island, so this is something to consider if you prefer spontaneous travel.
🚙 4. You Can’t Really Travel Socotra Independently
Socotra isn’t a destination where you can simply book a flight, rent a car at the airport, and figure everything out once you arrive.
You’ll need help arranging your visa and trip logistics, and renting a car independently isn’t really something you can do. There aren’t hotels across the island, nor are there restaurants you can stumble upon.
This is why going on an organized Socotra tour is the way to go. We tend to plan our own trips typically, but this was the one exception where going with a tour was the obvious option.

⛺ 5. You Need to Be Comfortable With Some Discomfort
This is probably the biggest consideration for people deciding whether Socotra is worth visiting.
There is a lot of camping, limited electricity, little cell service, and very few modern conveniences. Depending on your itinerary, you may spend several nights sleeping in places where the bathroom situation is very basic or far from your campsite.
If you need a comfortable hotel, reliable Wi-Fi, hot showers, and modern amenities every night, Socotra is probably going to be a difficult trip for you.
If you can embrace the discomfort as part of the experience, though, it can make the trip even more memorable.
🥗 6. It Can Be Difficult for Vegetarians
Food options are limited throughout Socotra, and the local diet includes a lot of fish and meat. If you’re vegetarian, you’ll want to discuss your dietary needs with whoever is organizing your trip ahead of time. While you’ll have plenty of rice, pasta, and beans, it’s important to know that the variety of cooking styles, vegetables, or spices won’t vary too much.
This isn’t a destination with endless restaurants where you can simply find a vegetarian meal whenever you’re hungry, so dietary restrictions require more planning.
The island of Socotra has very limited resources, so even supermarkets won’t have a ton of options. If you want, you could bring your own spices, canned goods, or snacks – but this is certainly something you’ll want to consider when planning a trip to Socotra.
🚽 7. It May Not Be Ideal for People With Digestive Issues
Bathrooms can be few and far between when you’re exploring remote parts of the island, and they aren’t always conveniently located when you’re camping or spending the day out exploring.
If you have digestive issues that require frequent or immediate bathroom access, this is something you should seriously consider before booking a trip.
It’s not necessarily a reason that you can’t visit, but you should understand what the conditions are like and plan accordingly, especially if there are any medications you’d need to bring.

The lack of light pollution is another huge bonus, especially if you love photographing the night sky. We found the landscapes and remoteness to be a huge part of what made photography in Socotra so special.

So, is Socotra worth visiting? For us, absolutely. It was one of the most exotic, exciting, and memorable trips we’ve ever taken. The landscapes were unreal, the night skies were incredible, the people were incredibly welcoming, and being able to disconnect from modern life made us appreciate how little we actually need.
But we also don’t want to pretend that Socotra is an easy destination. It’s expensive, remote, difficult to reach, and comes with a level of discomfort that not everyone will enjoy. There are limited flights, limited food options, limited connectivity, and a lot of camping. Those aren’t small things to overlook when deciding whether to go.
For us, though, that’s exactly what made Socotra worth visiting. We weren’t looking for a luxury vacation or somewhere that felt easy and familiar. We wanted adventure, incredible nature, and the chance to experience somewhere that still feels incredibly far removed from mass tourism.
