One of the great things about planning a trip to Puerto Rico is that it is a well-developed, relatively safe destination for tourists. San Juan in particular is very tourist-friendly, and the island has excellent infrastructure compared to many Caribbean destinations.
As with any destination, it is worth being aware of your surroundings, especially at night and in areas outside the main tourist zones (especially La Perla). Stick to well-lit streets after dark, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, and use reputable transportation. But in general, Puerto Rico is a place where you can relax and enjoy yourself as a tourist.
Solo travelers, couples, families, and groups can all visit Puerto Rico comfortably. It is a destination that genuinely suits everyone, and you can plan a trip to Puerto Rico without having to worry too much about danger. One thing to note that is that you should beware while in the water! Both Fede and my brother stepped on sea urchins there, and it wasn’t pleasant.

The island does experience a hurricane season from June through November, with the peak risk period being August through October. Outside of hurricane season, the weather is warm and wonderful pretty much all year.
The north coast (San Juan) tends to be wetter and greener, while the southwest (Cabo Rojo, Ponce) is noticeably drier and sunnier. El Yunque, sitting in the northeast mountains, gets significant rainfall year-round – which is what keeps it so lush.

We could easily spend 2 weeks in Puerto Rico and still feel like there was more to explore! For a first visit, we’d recommend at least 3–4 days in San Juan, 1–2 days for El Yunque, 2–3 days for Vieques or Culebra, and a few extra days if you want to road trip the rest of the island.
We personally think 10-14 days is perfect for really seeing everything the island has to offer, but no matter how long you’re able to go, there’s plenty to pack into a trip to Puerto Rico since it’s densely packed with activities.
