The trailhead for the Levada das 25 Fontes hike starts at Rabaรงal, in the central part of Madeira. From the parking lot you can either begin hiking directly or take advantage of the shuttle that brings visitors down the road to the official starting point of the levada walk.ย
The shuttle saves about 20-25 minutes of walking, which goes downhill there, and uphill on the way back.

How to Get to the Levada das 25 Fontes Trailhead

We absolutely loved the drive, and found ourselves above the clouds on our way there!ย
From the parking area, you have two options: hike down to the starting point (which adds extra distance and elevation change) or take the shuttle bus service that runs regularly. The shuttle is a convenient option, especially if you want to save energy for the waterfalls themselves.
There aren't any public buses that reach the parking lot, so if you don't have a car you'll either have to join a tour or grab an Uber to the parking lot itself. (Cars cannot drive where the shuttle drives).

As soon as we parked, we noticed a completely full lot with tons of other hikers. Many people were walking down the trail to the start of the trailhead, which goes on an incline down and takes about 30-35 minutes. We opted for the shuttle though, we we were shorter on time.
ย The Shuttle to the PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes Trailhead
There was a sign for the shuttle and we paid cash for round-trip tickets for the two of us, and waited a few minutes for it to arrive.
The shuttle ride took between 5-10 minutes, and dropped us at Rabaรงal Nature Spot Cafe, which is where the official start of the trailhead is.
Both trails start from the Rabaรงal Nature Spot Cafe.
The Hike to Risco Waterfall
We started off with hiking to Risco Waterfall, which is the shorter, easier path. The path is on the right-hand side, and took us around 15 minutes along a relatively flat dirt path.
As soon as we arrived there was a large platform full of people hanging out, having a snack, and snapping away at the gorgeous single-drop waterfall. There is also a path on the side, although not many people ventured off there since you get pretty wet in that area.
If you're visiting in the morning, we'd recommend starting with this waterfall since it's more popular and harder to photograph. If you're visiting in the late afternoon, we'd recommend finishing here to wait out some of the crowds.
You can see how crowded the platform is in the middle of the day.
ย The Hike to 25 Fontes
After Risco waterfall, we started our journey to 25 Fontes. You can either begin from the restaurant, or you can start from the fork 5 minutes walking back from Risco Waterfall.
The path to 25 Fontes is much more immersive, winding through the Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with rare plants and birds. Along the way, small streams trickle across the path, and you'll go down some sets of stairs, across a bridge, and past levadas.
The hike to 25 Fontes is much more scenic.
The hike took us about 45 minutes round-trip going from Risco Waterfall and going directly back towards the restaurant. It was much longer, but also much more scenic. 25 Fontes was full of people, but there was plenty of room for people to enjoy their own spot to hang out.
ย Photo Tip: Bring a wide lens to be able to get closer and eliminate people in your shots. Also head to the sides for some other unique angles!

ย Nearby Restaurant Recommendation
As you can imagine, the cafe at the trailhead is a bit pricier than others in Madeira. We actually grabbed sandwiches at Restaurant Jungle Rain and they were incredible!ย

Levada das 25 Fontes Hike Madeira: Safety & Tips
The 25 Fontes and Risco Waterfall hike is generally safe, and we saw a variety of travelers hiking there including older couple and small children.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind. The levada paths can be narrow and slippery, especially after rain, so wearing proper hiking shoes with good grip is essential. Stay on the marked trail, as some areas have steep drop-offs. If youโre hiking with children, keep them close, particularly near the levadas.
Bring enough water, as there arenโt refill stations along the trail, and snacks if you plan on taking breaks. A light rain jacket is also a good idea, since weather in Madeiraโs mountains can change quickly.
