Our Travel Planning Recommendations
What Summer in New York City is Really Like
Before planning your trip, it’ helps to’s good to understand how summer in New York City actually feels month by month. Unlike spring, when temperatures can change dramatically throughout the season, summer is generally hot, humid, and consistently warm. Here’s what to expect when it comes to timing, temperatures, and whether this is the right season for you.
🌸 What Months Are Summer in New York City?
Summer in New York typically runs from June through August. June usually starts off warm but manageable, while July and August can get extremely hot and humid.
If you’re sensitive to heat, June is generally a much more comfortable time to visit than the middle of summer. September can also be a great option if you want warmer weather without quite as much of the summer heat.
🌡 What Is the Weather Like During Summer in New York City?
Summer in New York is hot and humid, with temperatures typically sitting in the 80’s, 90’s, and sometimes even 100°F+. The humidity can make it feel considerably hotter, especially when you’re walking around the city all day, and the sun is reflecting off of the skyscrapers.
You’ll also want to be prepared for sudden summer thunderstorms. A forecast showing thunderstorms doesn’t necessarily mean it will rain all day, but short, heavy storms can pop up quickly. We always recommend checking the forecast before heading out and keeping a small umbrella with you.
The heat is also something to take seriously. Walking several miles around NYC in the middle of the afternoon can be exhausting, so we recommend planning some indoor activities or taking breaks in air-conditioned places throughout the day.

💡 The forecast in NYC during summer changes every single day. We recommend checking it closer to the day rather than stressing yourself out 10 days out.
🌤 Is Summer a Good Time to Visit New York?
Summer can be a great time to visit New York, but it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you don’t mind heat and humidity, there are tons of seasonal activities, free events, outdoor markets, parades, concerts, and festivals happening throughout the city.
On the other hand, if you’re someone who loves walking around for hours in comfortable temperatures, summer probably won’t be your favorite time to visit. The city can also feel much more crowded, especially around major attractions and popular outdoor areas.
At the same time, it also has a bit less of a local feel – particularly on weekends, since many locals go on vacation or head to the beach.
What Makes Summer in New York City Special
Summer may not be our favorite season in New York, but there are definitely some things that make it special. The biggest advantage is simply how much is happening throughout the city, especially outdoors.
🎉 There Are Tons of Free Activities
One of our favorite things about summer in New York City is how many activities you can enjoy without spending much money.
There are free outdoor concerts, movies in the park, fitness classes, cultural events, festivals, and community activities happening throughout the city. If you’re traveling on a budget, summer can actually be a great time to find fun things to do for free in NYC.

🌳 New York’s Parks Are Full of Life
Summer is when New York’s parks really come alive. People gather for picnics, exercise, sunbathing, playing sports, and simply spending time outside.
Central Park is an obvious choice, but there are also plenty of smaller parks and waterfront spaces throughout the city. You can pack a picnic, rent a bike, go for a walk, or simply find a shady spot and enjoy the atmosphere.
Our favorite time to spend in the parks is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the heat isn’t as intense.

🌊 You Can Enjoy the Water
NYC is surrounded by water, and summer is the best time to enjoy it. There’s jet skiing, boat rides, and even free kayaking you can take advantage of during the summer months, and also plenty of piers and floating bars.
Not only that, but there are small beaches nearby, or pool clubs to relax it.
Our favorite though? You can hop on one of the ferries down to the Jersey Shore and have a full beach day! New Jersey has long stretches of sand, boardwalks with rides and games, and tons of bars and restaurants. The views sailing down are excellent, the ride is relaxing, and you can also hop on the train if you want a bit of nightlife and to return to the city later at night.

⚾ Baseball Season is Back in Full Swing
Summer is a great time to catch a baseball game in New York. You can see the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium or the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Even if you’re not a huge baseball fan, going to a game is a fun way to experience something that feels very New York, and it can actually be very affordable!

⭐️ Tickets for some Mets games can be as cheap as $5-10 on week days! Also, College students often get discounted rates.
🛍 Outdoor Markets & Street Fairs Take Over the City
Summer is one of the best seasons for exploring New York’s outdoor markets and street fairs. You’ll find everything from local food and vintage clothing to handmade goods, art, and small businesses.
These markets are also a great way to explore neighborhoods outside of the typical tourist areas while supporting local businesses – a win-win!
