Christmas in New York aside, we’re here to help you kick off the new year and enjoy some of the most underrated months in the city. In this guide we’re going to share the best things to do in NYC in winter, along with essential tips like how to stay warm, what to pack, and more.

How to Enjoy All of the Things to Do in NYC in the Winter: A Brief Intro

Before we dive into all of the best things to do in NYC in the winter, let’s first talk about what winter in New York City is really like, so you can decide if it’s the right time for you to visit.

🧊 What Is NYC Like in Winter?

New York City experiences cold winters with shorter days, crisp air, and the possibility of snowfall that adds a magical touch to the city. While it does not get as brutally cold as some northern destinations, winter temperatures can still feel brutal, especially with the wind, making warm layers a must.

NYC has four very distinct seasons, so visiting in winter feels completely different than coming during spring or summer. Snowy parks, festive lights, and a cozy indoor atmosphere give the city a whole new personality during the colder months.

☃️ Is NYC Good in Winter?

Winter in NYC is surprisingly charming, especially when the streets are decorated for the holidays and Central Park is lightly dusted with snow. If you enjoy seasonal experiences, fewer crowds, and iconic city views, then winter can be a fantastic time to visit.

While some outdoor attractions slow down, many things to do in NYC in the winter revolve around ice skating, museums, Broadway shows, winter markets, and warming up in cozy cafes and bars throughout the city.

We particularly love celebrating Christmas in NYC, and understand that January to March aren’t necessarily the best months to visit New York, objectively speaking. Days are short, and it can be pretty cold, but these are the months that allow you to enjoy places without the crowds, and unique activities in NYC that you may otherwise have skipped.

🎄 Is NYC Good for Christmas?

Christmas is one of the most magical times to visit New York City. From the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to festive window displays, holiday markets, and seasonal holiday activities, NYC truly comes alive and offers some of the most iconic things to do in NYC in the winter’s start.

We’ve written a ton of guides for visiting NYC in December, so this article will really be focusing more on things to do in NYC in January, February, and March.

Snow in NYC typically falls between December and February, though light snowfall can occasionally happen in late November or throughout March. Snow is never guaranteed, but when it does happen, the city transforms into the most magical winter scene.

January is usually the coldest month in New York City, with February close behind. Temperatures often hover around freezing, with colder days dropping into the twenties. December can also be pretty cold, but it generally feels milder compared to the other winter months.

📆 Is January a Good Time to Visit NYC?

January is one of the least favorite months by locals and travelers alike. That being said, it can be a great time to visit NYC if you are looking for fewer crowds and better deals on hotels and flights. While the holiday decorations may begin to disappear, many of the best things to do in NYC in the winter are still available, and the city feels calmer while remaining just as exciting.

Whether you want to embrace the cold outdoors or cozy up inside, there are endless things to do in NYC in the winter that make the season feel much better than most people make it out to be.

⛸ Go Ice Skating at an Iconic Rink

Ice skating is one of the most classic winter experiences in New York City. Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and Central Park’s Wollman Rink all offer unforgettable settings, especially after dark when the city lights reflect off the ice.

🏛 Visit NYC’s Best Museums

Winter is the perfect time to dive into New York City’s world class museums. The Met, MoMA, the American Museum of Natural History, and The Whitney offer warm indoor escapes while still being some of the best things to do in NYC in the winter.

🎭 See a Broadway or Off Broadway Show

Cold weather is the perfect excuse to spend an evening inside a historic theater. Broadway shows, Off Broadway productions, and live performances are some of the most exciting things to do in NYC in the winter, and if you’re visiting NYC in December, you’ll also get a chance to experience some of the Christmas-themed ones.

🧖🏻‍♀️ Enjoy a Spa

There’s no better thing to do in the colder months than to find ways to warm up and relax. One of our favorite things to do in NYC in the winter is to go to one of the many spas. My personal favorite is SoJo spa, which is actually across the river in New Jersey, but boasts epic skyline views from their infinity pool along with over a dozen rooms to enjoy.

☕️ Warm Up in Cozy Cafes and Food Halls

Winter is an ideal time to explore NYC’s café culture and food halls. Whether you are sipping hot chocolate, enjoying a bowl of ramen, or grabbing a slice of pizza, eating your way through the city is always a good idea when temperatures drop. There are so many cool restaurants in NYC, and the winter is the perfect excuse to indulge a little extra.

🛍 Go Shopping Indoors

👀 Visit Observation Decks for Winter Views

Clear winter days offer some of the best visibility in NYC. Visiting observation decks that are inside like Summit One Vanderbilt or One World Trade Center, allows you to have amazing views with the cold and wind of the observations decks outside. It is one of the most fun and scenic things to do in NYC in the winter, especially at sunset.

✨ Enjoy Winter Events and Seasonal Installations

NYC hosts pop up winter villages, art installations, light shows, and seasonal festivals throughout the colder months. These limited time experiences are often overlooked but add something extra special to a winter trip.

🚐 Enjoy Day Trips From New York City in Winter

One of the best parts about visiting New York in the colder months is how easy it is to escape the city for a change of scenery. Even in winter, there are plenty of worthwhile day trips from NYC that add variety to your itinerary and compliment all of the other classic things to do in NYC in the winter.

Cold Spring, New York

Cold Spring is a charming small town along the Hudson River and makes for a cozy winter escape. While hiking trails may be icy, the town itself is perfect for strolling, antique shopping, and warming up in local cafes. On clear days, you’ll still get beautiful river views and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from Manhattan.

Beacon, New York

This is just a train ride away, and is actually where my twin sister moved after wanting a quieter lifestyle during Covid. Beacon is a great winter day trip if you want art, views, and a relaxed vibe. Dia Beacon is the main draw and is ideal for cold weather, as you can spend hours exploring its massive indoor galleries. Afterward, Main Street offers coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants that make Beacon feel lively even in winter.

Beacon is along the same train line as Cold Spring, meaning you can combine the two!

Hudson, New York

Hudson is stylish, artsy, and surprisingly fun in the winter months. The town is known for antique stores, galleries, and excellent restaurants, many of which feel extra cozy when it’s cold outside. It’s a great option if you want a low effort day trip that focuses on food, shopping, and atmosphere.

The Catskills

If you’re craving snow and nature, the Catskills are one of the best winter day trips from NYC, or even better as a weekend getaway. In winter, the region is known for skiing, snowshoeing, and scenic drives through snowy landscapes. I most recently visited the area with a friend to explore the frozen waterfalls, and it truly did not disappoint!

Sleepy Hollow, New York

While famous for fall, Sleepy Hollow is surprisingly attractive in winter. The historic streets, river views, and quiet energy make it a great half day trip. If you enjoy history and scenic walks without crowds, this is a unique winter option close to the city.

Day trips are a great way to balance busy winter in NYC activities with quieter moments outside the city. Just be sure to check weather conditions and train schedules ahead of time, as winter storms can occasionally affect travel.

🧥 What to Wear to New York City in the Winter

Winter in New York City can be cold, windy, and occasionally snowy, especially between December and February. The key to staying comfortable while enjoying winter in NYC activities is layering and choosing practical pieces that still let you explore the city comfortably.

For Visiting NYC in Winter You Should Wear:

Unlike some destinations, the best things to do in NYC in the winter often involve a lot of walking, standing, and waiting outdoors. Being warm and comfortable makes a huge difference, especially when sightseeing, exploring neighborhoods, or spending time outside in places like Central Park.
