If you’re planning a trip to this remote island, having a practical Socotra packing list will make preparing for the adventure much easier. Socotra is very different from your average beach vacation, and what you bring matters when you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors, camping in remote landscapes, hiking through canyons, and swimming in some of the island’s most beautiful natural spots.
We also learned that we packed quite a few things that we ended up not needing. Between the limited infrastructure, camping, and the amount of time spent exploring nature, this isn’t the type of trip where you’ll need a different outfit for every occasion. In fact, packing too much can make things more complicated than they need to be.
So, we’re sharing what we recommend bringing, what you can leave at home, and the practical things you’ll want to have while exploring the island of Socotra, Yemen.

Basic Info About Packing for Socotra
Before getting into the actual Socotra packing list, there are a few things about the island that are worth knowing about. The weather, the way you’ll travel around the island, and the local culture all affect what you’ll want to bring.
☀️ Weather in Socotra
Socotra is located relatively close to the equator, which means the sun can be extremely strong. When you’re standing in direct sunlight, it can feel very hot, while stepping into the shade can make a surprisingly big difference. You’ll be spending a lot of time outside, so sun protection should be one of your biggest priorities when packing.
The main tourist season generally runs from October through May, as the summer months bring monsoon conditions that make travel to the island much more difficult. We visited in October and had perfect weather for most of our trip. March is also a particularly beautiful time to visit, as this is when the famous bottle trees begin to bloom and the island can be filled with pink flowers.
For your suitcase, this means prioritizing lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and anything that will help you stay comfortable during long days in the sun.

⛺ What Is a Trip to Socotra Like?
A trip to Socotra is very different from a traditional vacation. Most itineraries involve camping rather than staying in hotels, and you’ll spend the majority of your time moving between beaches, mountains, canyons, and other natural attractions. There are areas of the island with very little infrastructure, so you won’t be popping into a store whenever you realize you’ve forgotten something.
This is also why you don’t need to pack as though you’re going on a city break. There generally isn’t much need for fancy clothing, heels, or a large collection of beauty products. Your days are more likely to involve hiking, swimming, relaxing at camp, and exploring the island’s landscapes.
The exact camping setup and what’s provided can vary depending on your tour operator, so we’d recommend confirming what is included before bringing bulky items such as bedding or other camping equipment. When we traveled with Socotra Specialty Tours, for example, they provided us with all of the camping equipment, along with a reusable water bottle.
👗 What Is the Dress Code for Socotra?
Socotra is a Muslim island, and you’ll notice that many local women dress very conservatively, sometimes with only their eyes showing. That being said, tourists are generally able to dress more casually while enjoying the island’s natural attractions.
When you’re at the beach, swimming, or spending time in nature, you can wear what you would normally wear for those activities. You don’t need to cover yourself from head to toe just because you’re visiting Socotra.
The main thing to keep in mind is that you’ll want to dress more conservatively when visiting towns, particularly Hadiboh, the capital. You don’t necessarily need to be fully covered, but we recommend wearing clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and avoiding exposed chests or backs. Bringing a longer dress, loose pants, or a lightweight shirt that you can throw on over your clothes makes this easy.

Ready to pack for Socotra? Here is a list of everything you’ll need for your upcoming trip.
👚 Clothing to Pack for Socotra
For most of your time in Socotra, you’ll want lightweight, comfortable clothes that you can easily hike, swim, and explore in. There’s no reason to bring a bunch of fancy outfits because you’ll be camping and spending most of your days outdoors.
👕 Everyday Clothes
Think simple, breathable, and comfortable when putting together your outfits. You’ll likely rotate through your favorite T-shirts, shorts, and lightweight pants throughout the trip, so you don’t need a different outfit for every day. We’d recommend lightweight fabrics like linen, as well as fabrics that dry quickly like charmeuse.
🩱 Swimwear
You’ll definitely want a few bathing suits for Socotra. The island has incredible beaches, lagoons, and natural pools, and swimming is a big part of exploring the destination.
Don’t worry about the local dress code when you’re actually swimming or spending time in nature. Tourists are able to wear swimsuits, so pack whatever swimwear you normally feel comfortable wearing.
👗 Conservative Clothing for Towns
You’ll want to bring an outfit or two that you can wear when visiting towns, particularly Hadiboh. You don’t need anything fancy, just clothing that gives you a little more coverage.
A longer dress, loose-fitting pants, or a lightweight shirt that covers your shoulders are all easy options. Keeping one of these outfits easily accessible is especially helpful if you’re going directly from an outdoor activity into town.
🧢 Hat
A hat is a small thing that can make a big difference when you’re spending hours in the sun. You’ll get plenty of sun exposure in Socotra, so bring a hat or cap that you’re comfortable wearing while hiking and exploring.
👟 Shoes to Pack for Socotra
You don’t need to bring a huge collection of footwear, but you will want a few different options because Socotra’s activities range from hiking to swimming to relaxing around camp.
🥾 Sneakers or Hiking Shoes
A comfortable pair of sneakers or hiking shoes is essential for exploring the island. Even if you’re not planning on doing extreme hikes, you’ll be walking across rocky and uneven terrain, so supportive footwear is much more useful than anything fashionable.
💦 Water Shoes
Water shoes are particularly useful for canyon excursions. You’ll be walking through water and over rocks, and having shoes designed for those conditions is much more comfortable than trying to navigate everything barefoot or in regular sneakers.
🩴 Flip Flops
Flip flops are useful for the beach, showers, and hanging around camp. We personally always get Havaianas because they’re comfortable, lightweight, and long-lasting.
🧼 Toiletries to Pack for Socotra
You don’t need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet to Socotra, but you will need to be properly prepared. Since you’ll be camping and spending most of your time outdoors, stick to the basics and prioritize the products that will actually make you more comfortable in the environment.
☀️ Sun Protection
The sun is probably the biggest thing to prepare for when it comes to your toiletries. You’ll be outside for hours at a time, so don’t assume you’ll be fine with the tiny bottle of sunscreen you normally throw into your carry-on.
🦟 Bug Spray
Bug spray is another small item that’s worth having, especially since you’ll be camping and spending so much time outdoors. You may not need it constantly, but it’s much better to have it when you do.
🧴 Basic Toiletries
Bring the toiletries you normally use, but stick to practical necessities rather than packing a full beauty routine.
⛺️ Camping & Practical Essentials
Because you’ll be camping and traveling through areas with limited infrastructure, there are a few practical things that you’ll want to have with you. These aren’t glamorous, but they’re the items that can make a remote trip considerably easier.
🎒 Small Backpack
A small backpack or day bag is one of the most useful things you can bring, especially for bringing on hikes and adventures away from the car. We recommend having something small for water, sunscreen, your camera, and other essentials.

💧 Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is extremely important when you’re spending long days in Socotra’s heat. A reusable bottle is a must, especially since the island has a large plastic and trash problem, which we definitely do not want to add to.
When we traveled with Socotra Specialty Tours, they provided us with a reusable water bottle, so this was one less thing we had to worry about bringing, but if you’re traveling with another company, we’d recommend asking them.
🔋 Power Bank
Bring a power bank because you may not always have convenient access to electricity while camping. Your phone and camera can get a lot of use throughout the day, and the last thing you want is to run out of battery when you’re trying to capture something incredible. We use Anker power banks because they’re reliable and last a long time.
🔌 Travel Adapter
A travel adapter is another basic essential for keeping your electronics charged, but it truthfully is only needed for those that have hotel stayed incorporated into their itinerary.
Socotra uses a mix of European and British outlets, so having one that is multi-plug friendly is going to be your best bet.
🚗 Car Charger
Even if you have a hotel stay for a day or two, chances are you’re going to be camping for the majority of your trip. You’ll be in the car for extended hours, and this is honestly your best chance at keeping yourself charged up.
We actually invested in a car charger that has both USBC ports and plug ports, which is extremely useful for charging camera batteries.
🔦 Flashlight
Bring a flashlight or headlamp for camping at night and exploring darker areas, including caves. Having your own light is especially useful once the sun goes down at camp, and is on most Socotra packing lists from tour companies.
🏖️ Towels
We recommend bringing two towels if your tour operator doesn’t provide them. One can be used for showering and the other for the beach or swimming, so you don’t have to use the same towel for everything. We’d also bring a small one for washing your face.
Before packing two bulky towels, though, check with your tour operator to see what they provide.
📱 Waterproof Phone Pouch
A waterproof phone pouch is useful for swimming, canyon excursions, and other water-based activities. We use the Case-Mate waterproof phone pouch because it allows us to keep our phones protected while still bringing them into the water.
📚 Books, Magazines, or Kindles + Journals or Notebooks
Socotra is a destination with a lot of adventure, but also one where you appreciate slowing down and simply soaking up the landscapes around you.
You’ll have a lot of downtime, and it’s such a fantastic place to journal, read, or simply jot down ideas. Signal is poor and nature is beautiful, so save that phone battery and get out your paper products instead.
📸 Photography Gear for Socotra
Socotra is an incredible destination for photography, so if you’re someone who enjoys taking photos, you’ll want to give some thought to what equipment you bring. The island has huge landscapes, unusual trees, turquoise water, and incredible night skies, so there’s plenty to photograph.
You absolutely don’t need a professional camera setup to enjoy Socotra, but investing in egar is totally worth it. This is the photography gear we personally use when photographing our travels.
📷 Camera + Lenses
We use a mirrorless camera everyday, along with a few lenses that give us different options depending on what we’re photographing.
You definitely don’t need to bring all three lenses unless you’re serious about photography. If you’re trying to keep your luggage lighter, the standard lens is probably the most versatile choice.
🌊 Waterproof Camera
If you plan on swimming, exploring canyons, or spending a lot of time around the water, an action camera is a game-changer for your Socotra trip. You won’t want to risk your main camera every time you get near the water, and having a waterproof camera is also fun for jumping into canyons or floating in the crystal-clear waters of Socotra’s beaches.
We use the Insta360 X3 because it’s small, waterproof, and easy to bring along for adventures, and also have a GoPro since it photographs nicely and has filters we like to use.
🌌 Tripod
A tripod is so useful in Socotra for a number of reasons. The island is remote and has very little light pollution, making it an incredible place for astrophotography. if you want to photograph Socotra’s night skies, you’ll need a tripod to keep your camera steady.
We also loved having a tripod because it allowed us to take pictures on our own. Even though our guides were happy to take pictures for us, we’re pretty particular with our angles. Also, it really helped us early in the morning while everyone was sleeping.
We use the JOBY Rangepod Tripod because it’s compact enough to travel with without taking up much space, but also has a nice height and can hold a heavy lens.
🚁 Drone
A drone can give you an entirely different perspective of Socotra’s landscapes, and there are plenty of places where aerial photography is absolutely breathtaking on the island.
Some of our favorite photos from Socotra were from our drone, and if you have one, then we highly recommend bringing it with you. Just keep in mind that many countries in the Middle East don’t allow drones, so check where your route for getting to Socotra and that country’s drone requirements to make sure you’re in complaince.
We use the Mavic Mini 4 Pro because it’s lightweight and produces great-quality footage. The Mavic Pro is better for areas with high winds, but the mini is much easier to carry around.

There are a few smaller accessories you’ll also want to remember if you’re bringing a camera.
🙅🏻♀️ What You Don’t Need to Pack
We definitely packed things for Socotra that we ended up not needing. Since you’ll be spending most of your time camping and exploring nature, there are quite a few things that make sense to leave behind.
🛏️ Extra Blankets & Pillows
Don’t automatically pack bulky blankets or pillows before checking what your tour operator provides. Camping arrangements vary, and you may end up carrying things around that you never actually use.
Our tour in Socotra had all pillows and blankets included, so that was something we didn’t need to worry about. Definitely check with your company first though!
👗 Fancy Clothing
You also don’t need a suitcase full of nice outfits. Socotra isn’t a destination where you’ll be getting dressed up every night, so stick to comfortable clothing that you can actually use while exploring.
That being said, you’ll probably notice I wear dresses in a lot of my photos. This is personally my photography style, but don’t feel like you need to bring dresses with you if it’s not yours.
💇 Hair Tools
You can leave the hair tools at home. Between camping, swimming, and spending your days outside, you’re probably not going to have much use for a hair dryer, straightener, or curling iron.
💄 Makeup
Unless makeup is something you personally enjoy wearing, this isn’t something you’ll really need for most of the trip. You’ll be outdoors for the majority of your time, and there’s very little reason to pack a full makeup bag.
👠 Heels
Leave the heels at home. There isn’t much opportunity to wear them, and comfortable shoes will be infinitely more useful on this trip.
Final Tips for Packing for Socotra
The biggest thing to remember when packing for Socotra is that this is an outdoor adventure, not a traditional resort vacation. You’ll be hiking, swimming, camping, and exploring for most of your trip, so the things you’ll appreciate most are comfortable clothing, good shoes, strong sun protection, and a few practical essentials.
We also recommend checking with your tour operator before you start packing to see exactly what’s included. This can save you from bringing unnecessary camping equipment, towels, bedding, or other bulky items. And don’t feel like you need to bring everything you would normally pack for a vacation. We certainly didn’t use everything we brought!
