The Ultimate Fall Packing List for Your Upcoming Adventures

Sharing is caring!

Packing for fall can be a little tricky. Unlike summer, when you can usually count on hot days and lightweight clothes, or winter, when you know you’ll need to prepare for cold weather, fall can bring a little bit of everything. One day might feel like summer, the next could be chilly and rainy, and temperatures can change quite a bit between the morning and evening.

That’s what makes putting together a fall packing list a little different. You want to be prepared for changing weather without bringing your entire closet or filling your suitcase with bulky layers you may never wear. The key is choosing versatile pieces that can work together and adjusting your outfits depending on the forecast.

In this guide, we’ll go over what to pack for a fall trip, including the best layers, colors to wear, shoes and weather essentials to bring, and a few photography tips to keep in mind if you’re hoping to capture the beautiful autumn scenery.

Before Starting Your Fall Packing List: What to Know About Traveling in Fall

Before putting together your fall packing list, there are a few things to consider. Fall weather can vary significantly depending on your destination, the time of year, and whether you’re traveling early or late in the season.

🍂 What Is the Weather Like in Fall?

Fall weather is generally known for cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and shorter days, but the actual conditions can vary quite a bit. Early fall may still feel hot during the day, while late fall can bring cold mornings, rain, wind, or even snow in some destinations.

You’ll also want to think about the temperature difference throughout the day. Early morning can be foggy and damp, and late mornings and evenings can be chilly even when the afternoon is comfortable, which is why dressing in layers is so important for fall travel.

Before leaving, check the forecast for your specific destination and look at the typical weather for the entire period of your trip. That will help you decide whether you need a light jacket, a warmer coat, waterproof shoes, or accessories like a scarf and gloves.

🧳 Why Is Packing for Fall Different?

The biggest challenge with fall packing is preparing for several types of weather without overpacking. You may need a T-shirt for a warm afternoon, a sweater for the evening, and a rain jacket if the weather changes unexpectedly. Depending on where you are, it might even snow!

Instead of packing one outfit for every possible temperature, focus on pieces that can be mixed and matched. A long-sleeve shirt can be worn on its own or underneath a sweater, while a light jacket can be added when the temperature drops. This gives you more outfit options without taking up too much space in your suitcase.

The goal of a good fall packing list is to stay comfortable, be prepared for unpredictable weather, and still have enough room in your luggage for everything else you want to bring.

The Ultimate Fall Packing List: Everything to Bring on Your Adventure

Now that you have a better idea of what fall weather can look like, it’s time to put together your fall packing list. The goal is to bring pieces that can be layered, mixed and matched, and adjusted depending on the temperature, while still leaving room in your suitcase for everything else you need.

🧥 Pack Plenty of Layers

Layers are the most important part of packing for a fall trip. Temperatures can change throughout the day, and having a few lightweight pieces gives you more flexibility than packing one heavy item that you may not need all the time.

Start with comfortable basics that you can wear on their own or layer underneath something warmer. Depending on your destination, you may want to pack:

  • T-shirts: useful for warmer afternoons or as a base layer.
  • Long-sleeve shirts: great for cooler days and easy to wear under sweaters.
  • Bathing suits: for unusually hot days or hot springs for cooler days.
  • Sweaters, cardigans, or ponchos: ideal for adding warmth without immediately reaching for a heavy coat.
  • A light jacket: a denim jacket, leather jacket, or windbreaker can work well for milder fall weather.
  • A warmer coat: necessary if you’re traveling later in the season or visiting a colder destination like the mountains.

💡 Try to choose pieces that work together in several combinations. A neutral sweater, for example, can be worn with jeans, trousers, or a skirt, while a long-sleeve shirt can be layered under almost anything.

🍁 Choose Fall-Friendly Colors

Fall is a great time to have a little more fun with your wardrobe. You can lean into the colors around you without having to dress head-to-toe in orange and brown.

Earthy tones like burgundy, rust, mustard, olive green, cream, brown, and beige naturally photograph well against autumn scenery. Black, white, denim, and other neutrals are also easy to mix with these colors and give you more outfit combinations.

If you know you’ll be visiting somewhere with beautiful fall foliage, think about how your clothes will look against the scenery. Wearing colors that complement the leaves can make your photos look much more cohesive, and reds and yellows are the best for this.

☔ Bring Something for Rain

Rain is always a possibility during fall, so it’s worth having something in your suitcase even if the forecast looks clear. You don’t necessarily need to bring a huge umbrella from home, especially if you’re trying to save space, but having a compact travel umbrella can be incredibly useful. A plus? We love having a yellow, red, or clear umbrella to enhance fall photography rather than disrupting it.

A lightweight waterproof or water-resistant jacket is another great option. It can double as a windbreaker and give you an extra layer without taking up the same amount of space as a heavy raincoat.

If you’re heading somewhere that regularly gets a lot of rain, check the forecast before you leave and adjust accordingly. There’s a big difference between preparing for a quick shower and spending several days somewhere with constant wet weather.

🗺️ Keep Your Itinerary in Mind

The destination is the most important part of properly packing for your trip during fall. Not every fall trip looks the same, and weather and clothing can change drastically depending on what kind of trip you’re looking to have.

Coastal trips will have much more consistent weather, while trips to the desert will have larger temperature swings, and trips to the mountains will require much more preparation.

When we did a road trip in Georgia a few years ago, there was one day where the day started hot and sunny like summer. We drove an hour and were surrounded by tons of fall foliage and cooler temperatures. One hour later we then found ourselves in a snow storm! That’s why analyzing each part of your itinerary is important – so you are prepared for anything that can come your way!

👢 Pack the Right Shoes

Shoes can make or break a fall trip, especially if you’re planning to spend a lot of time walking. You want something comfortable enough for sightseeing but also appropriate for the weather you’re likely to encounter.

A pair of ankle boots is a great fall option because they work with jeans, trousers, dresses, and skirts while also giving you a little more protection from cold and wet weather. For warmer destinations, sneakers may be all you need, while colder or wetter destinations could call for waterproof boots.

Whatever you bring, prioritize comfort over fashion. Fall is a great time for walking around cities, hiking through forests, visiting markets, and exploring outdoor attractions, and blisters are definitely not worth the cute outfit.

💡 Please don’t bring brand-new shoes on a trip without breaking them in first. Your feet will thank you later.

🧦 Don’t Forget Warm Accessories

Small accessories can make a surprisingly big difference when the temperature drops. They also take up much less room in your suitcase than another bulky sweater or coat, so they’re honestly the key to any successful fall packing list.

Here are a few things we’d consider bringing:

  • Warm socks: especially important if you’ll be spending long days outside.
  • Scarf: an easy way to add warmth and change up an outfit.
  • Beanie: useful for colder destinations and mountain trips.
  • Gloves: worth bringing for late fall or higher elevations.
  • Sunglasses: cooler temperatures don’t mean the sun disappears!
  • Hat: helpful for sunny days, especially if you’ll be hiking or spending lots of time outdoors.
  • Tights: easy to carry and throw on under a dress or skirt if it starts to get cold.

⭐️ You don’t necessarily need all of these for every destination. Check your forecast and choose the accessories that make sense for you.

👖 Bring Versatile Bottoms

For most fall trips, jeans, trousers, leggings, or other comfortable pants are easy staples to build your outfits around. If you’re traveling somewhere with milder weather, you can also bring skirts or dresses and pair them with tights and boots when it gets colder.

Try to avoid packing too many different bottoms that only work with one outfit. A few pairs that you can wear with multiple tops will give you much more flexibility and save space.

If you’re traveling between very different climates, think about what you can layer underneath or over your bottoms. Tights, leggings, and thermal layers will make a massive difference without taking up a ton of room.

📸 Think About Your Photos

If you’re traveling somewhere specifically for the fall foliage, don’t forget to think about what you’ll be wearing in your photos. Autumn landscapes can be absolutely incredible, and choosing your outfits ahead of time can make a world of difference in your photos.

Pack a few outfits in colors that complement the scenery, and consider bringing accessories like a scarf, hat, or coat that can change the look without requiring an entirely different outfit.

🎒 Choose the Right Day Bag

Your fall day bag needs to hold a little more than it might during summer. When temperatures can change throughout the day, you may want somewhere to stash an extra layer, umbrella, or scarf.

A comfortable backpack or crossbody bag can work well depending on your plans. If you’re heading out for a full day of sightseeing, make sure it has enough room for your essentials without becoming so heavy that you don’t want to carry it around. I also love bringing a large neutral-colored bag so that it pairs with whatever I’m wearing.

A reusable water bottle, portable charger, tissues, and any medications you need are also worth keeping in your day bag. If you’re visiting somewhere with unpredictable weather, having your rain layer or compact umbrella with you can save you from an unexpected soaking.

Final Tips for Your Fall Packing List & What’s Next

The best way to pack for fall is to prepare for change without trying to prepare for absolutely everything. Check the forecast, think about the elevation and locations you’ll be visiting, and choose clothing that can be layered and worn in several different combinations.

If you’re traveling between different regions, remember that the weather can change dramatically within a relatively short distance. Our experience in Georgia was a perfect example of why having a few different layers can be so useful. We went from summer weather to gorgeous fall foliage to snowy mountains all within the same trip.

Most importantly, leave yourself a little flexibility. Fall is such a beautiful time to travel, and you’ll want to be comfortable enough to spend time outside enjoying it rather than worrying about whether you packed the perfect outfit for every possible temperature.
