One of the things we love most about traveling in fall is how different the season can be from one destination to another. September, October, and November can bring completely different weather, and even within the same country, you can enjoy a variety of conditions. We’ve experienced this firsthand in Georgia, where we had summer-like weather in one area, drove into beautiful fall colors, and then continued into the mountains where there was already tons of snow.

With so many options, deciding where to travel in fall really comes down to what kind of trip you’re craving.

Want colorful leaves? Choose a destination based on its foliage season and plan around peak color. Remember that elevation and latitude can shift the timing considerably.
Want Halloween? Look for destinations with major events, decorated neighborhoods, haunted history, or unique local traditions.
Want beer and festivals? Oktoberfest and harvest festivals can give you a reason to plan your trip around a specific event.
Want food and wine? Look for destinations during harvest season and research what’s actually in season while you’re there.
Want hiking and mountains? Check temperatures, elevation, trail conditions, and potential snowfall rather than relying on the calendar alone.
Want warm weather? Look at destinations closer to the equator, but not those affected by hurricane season.

🍁 Best Fall Vacations for Colorful Foliage

My personal favorite reason for traveling in fall is to experience the vibrant colors. They’re a fleeting experience, and each day is different.

If you’re a photographer, taking pictures of fall foliage is truly a game-changer for your portfolio. And even if you’re not a photographer, you can still appreciate the gorgeous colors that fall has to offer.

Some of our favorite places for fall colors include:

New England, USA: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts are the absolute classics. You can drive through colorful forests, visit charming small towns, hike through the mountains, and stop at covered bridges, farms, and local markets along the way. New England is especially great for a fall road trip because there are so many destinations to connect together.
New York, USA: The entire state of New York, including NYC are incredible for fall. The Adirondacks and Catskills are both particularly fantastic for fall scenery. You’ll find mountains, lakes, hiking trails, scenic roads, and plenty of small towns where you can stop along the way. The Catskills are also an easy option for a fall escape from New York City.
Maine: One of my favorite unexpected trips. We recommend a sailboat trip along the Maine coast for a completely different way to experience autumn, especially if you’re interested in combining beautiful foliage, charming towns, delicious food, and relaxing days on the water.
Pacific Northwest, USA: Washington and Oregon offer a different take on fall foliage, combining changing leaves with evergreen forests, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and dramatic landscapes. The Columbia River Gorge and areas around Mount Rainier are particularly stunning in autumn.
Colorado, USA: Colorado is famous for its golden aspens, which turn entire mountainsides bright yellow during the fall. Scenic drives through the Rockies are one of the best ways to experience the season, and the changing elevation means you can see very different conditions during the same trip.
Utah, USA: Utah may be best known for its red-rock landscapes, but its mountains put on an impressive fall show too. The Wasatch Mountains, Logan Canyon, and other mountainous areas offer colorful foliage surrounded by dramatic scenery, making this a great choice for hiking and scenic drives.
Idaho, USA: Idaho is an underrated choice for fall foliage, with colorful forests, mountains, rivers, and scenic byways throughout the state. Because the foliage changes at different elevations, you can often find beautiful colors in different parts of Idaho throughout the season, and enjoy hot springs across the state at the same time.
Canada: Québec and Ontario offer classic autumn scenery, while the Canadian Rockies provide a much more dramatic mountain backdrop. Fall is also a great time for scenic drives and hiking before winter conditions take over at higher elevations.
Switzerland: Switzerland combines colorful forests with alpine lakes, mountain villages, and dramatic peaks. Fall is especially beautiful if you want to explore the Alps on foot or by train while experiencing a quieter atmosphere than the height of summer.
The Dolomites, Italy: The Dolomites are stunning in every season, but autumn brings colorful forests against the dramatic limestone peaks. Cooler temperatures also make fall a great time for hiking and exploring the mountain villages.
Slovenia: Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the Julian Alps, and the surrounding forests become especially gorgeous in autumn. Slovenia is a great option if you want to combine foliage with lakes, mountains, charming towns, and outdoor activities with a ton of hiking.
Georgia: Georgia is one of our favorite examples of why elevation matters when planning a fall trip. You can experience warm weather and fall colors at lower elevations before driving into the mountains and finding completely different conditions, including snow. If you enjoy road trips and dramatic changes in scenery, Georgia is an especially epic choice.
Azerbaijan: Northern Azerbaijan offers an unexpected fall foliage experience, particularly around the mountain regions of Quba and Gabala. Colorful forests, valleys, and mountain villages make this an amazing choice if you’re looking for somewhere outside the usual fall destination list.
Kazakhstan: The mountains around Almaty can be spectacular in autumn, especially when colorful forests contrast with the rugged Tian Shan mountains. The changing elevation also creates noticeably different landscapes throughout the season.
Japan: Japan is one of the world’s most famous fall destinations. Kyoto, Nikko, and Hokkaido are especially popular for autumn colors, but there are beautiful foliage destinations throughout the country. The best part is that you can combine the scenery with temples, gardens, traditional experiences, and incredible food.
South Korea: Seoul and destinations throughout the Korean countryside become incredibly colorful in fall. Mountains, temples, parks, and historic sites surrounded by autumn foliage make South Korea a great choice for combining a city trip with time outdoors. We also love the pink muhly that is outside of Busan at this time of year!

🎃 Best Fall Vacations for Halloween

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, and it’s not far behind Christmas when it comes to celebrating. Some destinations go all-in with haunted history, elaborate decorations, parades, ghost tours, costumes, and seasonal events.

Here are some of the top Halloween destinations to enjoy:

New York City is an obvious choice, especially if you want a combination of Halloween events and everything else the city has to offer. You can attend the Village Halloween Parade, check out spooky bars, see decorated homes, and explore neighborhoods that go all-out for the season.
Salem, Massachusetts is another classic Halloween destination, with an entire month of events tied to the city’s history and witch trials. October is extremely popular here, so you’ll want to plan ahead if this is your destination.
Conway, South Carolina: Often referred to as Halloween Town, Conway embraces the season with decorations and community events. It’s a great example of why you don’t have to visit one of the biggest cities in the country to have a fun Halloween vacation.
New Orleans: Haunted history, cemeteries, ghost tours, and Halloween events.
London: Historic buildings, ghost stories, spooky tours, and seasonal events.
Edinburgh: Medieval streets, dark history, underground tours, and plenty of spooky atmosphere.

💡 If Halloween is the main reason you’re traveling, check the event calendar before booking your trip. Some destinations have Halloween celebrations throughout October, while others concentrate most of their activities around just Halloween weekend.

💀 Best Fall Vacations for Celebrating Día de los Muertos

If you like Halloween, then you will absolutely love celebrating Dia de los Muertos! It’s technically on November 1st, but is often celebrated several days leading up to it.

Oaxaca is one of the best-known destinations for Día de los Muertos, with elaborate altars, decorations, parades, markets, and celebrations throughout the city and surrounding communities.

Mexico City is another option, with large public celebrations, parades, museums, food, and events throughout the city.

You can also look toward Michoacán, particularly around Lake Pátzcuaro, where Día de los Muertos traditions have deep cultural roots and has an incredible local experience.

💡 Take time to understand the traditions and be respectful when photographing ceremonies, altars, cemeteries, and families.

🍺 Oktoberfest & Fall Festival Vacations

Fall is also festival season, and Oktoberfest is one of the biggest reasons people plan an autumn trip.

Munich, Germany is the obvious choice if you want the full Oktoberfest experience. The festival is huge, with massive beer tents, traditional food, live music, rides, and people coming from all over the world. If you’re planning to go, book your accommodation early because this is one of the busiest times of year in the city.

Munich isn’t the only city worth experiencing Oktoberfest in though! Germany has plenty of other Oktoberfest celebrations, which are great if you want a more local experience.

You can also find major celebrations outside Germany:

Villa General Belgrano, Córdoba, Argentina: Argentina’s German-influenced mountain town hosts its National Beer Festival, bringing German traditions, beer, food, music, and celebrations to South America.
Blumenau, Brazil: One of the biggest Oktoberfest celebrations outside Germany, with strong German cultural influences throughout the city.
Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, Cincinnati, USA: Cincinnati’s German heritage makes it a great location for one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States.
Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada: One of the biggest Oktoberfest celebrations outside Germany, with multiple Festhallen and events taking place throughout the region.
Marco Polo German Bierfest, Hong Kong: A completely different setting for a German beer festival, with the event taking place against the backdrop of Hong Kong.
Brașov, Romania: A fun option if you want to combine an Oktoberfest-style celebration with exploring the beauty of Translyvania.

💡 While Germany’s Oktoberfest starts in the end of September, other Oktoberfest celebrations can go throughout October or even into November.

🍇 Harvest & Food Vacations

Fall is an amazing time to plan a trip around food and harvests. This is when vineyards are buzzing with grape harvests in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, but wine isn’t the only reason to travel. Depending on where you go, you can also experience truffle season, mushroom foraging, olive harvests, apple and cider season, chestnut festivals, and other local products that are at their best during the fall.

Wine lovers can look to places like Tuscany, Napa Valley, and the Douro Valley for grape harvest season, when vineyards are especially active and many wineries offer harvest-related experiences. Just make sure you’re checking the harvest calendar for the destination you’re visiting. Mendoza, for example, is a major wine destination, but its grape harvest takes place during the Southern Hemisphere’s late summer and early fall, roughly February through April, so it doesn’t line up with our fall.

Fall is also an incredible time to travel specifically for unique foods. Piedmont, Italy is famous for its white truffles, with Alba and the surrounding area becoming a major destination during truffle season. You can also look for olive harvests in the Mediterranean, chestnut festivals in parts of Italy and France, apple and cider festivals in places like the UK, and mushroom season throughout parts of Europe.

💡 Harvest dates can shift from year to year depending on weather, so the exact timing matters just as much as the destination.

Fall isn’t only about looking at the leaves. Cooler temperatures can make it one of the best seasons for hiking, road trips, camping, scenic drives, and exploring mountain destinations.

This is especially true in places where summer can be extremely hot or crowded. By fall, temperatures become much more comfortable for spending long days outside, while many popular summer destinations start to quiet down. We love visiting desert landscapes, jungles, and mountains during fall, as they’re much more enjoyable this time of year.

Just remember that mountain weather can change quickly. A destination that feels like summer at one elevation can already be cold or snowy higher up, especially later in the fall. Check conditions before heading out and pack for your fall trip accordingly.

☀️ Warm-Weather Fall Vacations

If you’re not ready to trade your summer clothes for sweaters, fall can actually be one of the best times to travel somewhere warm!

Southern Europe is especially appealing during the early part of fall, and we think it’s much more enjoyable than visiting in summer (even that’s what’s more popular). Malta, Greece, Cyprus, southern Spain, and Portugal can all still have warm days for swimming, beaches, and outdoor activities after the peak summer heat has passed.

This is also where it helps to think about which month you’re traveling. A destination that is perfect for a warm-weather vacation in September might feel completely different by late November.

🦬 The Best Fall Vacations for Animal Lovers

Fall isn’t just a great season for scenery and food. Around the world, September, October, and November bring some incredible wildlife experiences that happen during very specific times of year – so if you’re looking for unique animal encounters, then your fall bucket list is about to get longer.

Some of our favorite wildlife experiences to look for in fall include:

🐻 Polar bears in Churchill, Canada: October and November are prime months to visit Churchill as polar bears gather along Hudson Bay and wait for the sea ice to form. This is one of the most unique wildlife trips you can plan specifically around fall.
🦋 Monarch butterflies in Mexico: Monarchs begin their migration south in September and October before arriving in the mountains of central Mexico around November. Seeing huge colonies cover the trees is an incredible seasonal spectacle, particularly around the monarch sanctuaries in Michoacán and the State of Mexico.
🐋 Southern right whales in South Africa: September through November is a fantastic time for whale watching along South Africa’s coast, when southern right whales gather in the warmer waters to breed and raise their calves. The area around Hermanus is particularly well known for whale watching.
🐘 The Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania: The exact timing and location varies each year, but September and October can still offer incredible opportunities to see huge herds of wildebeest and other wildlife as the migration continues through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara.
🐻 Bears and salmon in Alaska: Late summer and early fall bring one of the best combinations for wildlife viewing in Alaska. Bears are busy taking advantage of salmon runs before winter, while moose, eagles, and migrating birds are also active throughout the region.

🐘 Elephant seals in California: Fall is a great time to visit parts of California’s coast to see elephant seals, which gather on beaches along the Pacific. Depending on the location and timing, you may see them resting on shore as well as other marine wildlife nearby.
🐋 Orcas in Norway: Autumn brings large numbers of herring into northern Norway, attracting orcas and other marine life. This seasonal feeding activity has made northern Norway a popular destination for travelers hoping to see orcas in the wild.
🐋 Manatees in Florida: As temperatures begin to drop in November, manatees start moving toward warmer waters, making this the beginning of the seasonal manatee-viewing period in Florida. Places like Crystal River can offer opportunities to see them in their natural habitat, and even kayak right next to them!

You don’t have to plan your entire vacation around leaves, festivals, or seasonal events. Sometimes the best fall vacation is simply a great city trip.

Fall can bring comfortable sightseeing weather to many cities, particularly after the intense heat of summer has passed. It’s also a great time for museums, food tours, walking around neighborhoods, seasonal events, and enjoying outdoor spaces without the same summer conditions.
