Fall in New York CIty: Seasonal Activities, How to Dress, & What to Pack
Fall in New York City is one of my absolute favorite! For locals, it’s the best time of year to experience the city. The summer heat finally starts to fade, the leaves change across the city’s parks, and suddenly the city becomes peaceful. Add in Halloween decorations, football season, cozy restaurants, and some of the biggest events of the year, and NYC truly shines, especially for the people that call New York home.
While September can still feel like summer, October brings that classic crisp fall weather, colorful foliage, and all of the seasonal activities we love about New York. By November, temperatures drop and the city starts transitioning into the holiday season, but there are still plenty of fall experiences to enjoy before Christmas takes over.
In this guide, we’re breaking down what fall in New York City is really like, the best seasonal things to do, major events to know about, and how to dress and pack for those unpredictable autumn temperatures.

What Fall in New York City Is Really Like
Before planning your trip, it helps to understand how fall in New York City actually feels month by month. The weather shifts quickly during this season, and your experience in early September can look very different from a visit in November. Here’s what to expect when it comes to timing, temperatures, and whether this is the right season for you.
📆 What Months Are Fall in New York City?
Fall in New York City typically runs from September through November. September can still feel like summer, especially early in the month, and sometimes it can still be hot enough for a day trip to the beach! October brings gorgeous fall foliage and milder temperatures, and November often feels like early winter with some days cold enough to snow.
🌡 What Is the Weather Like During Fall in New York City?
Temperatures usually start in the 80’s in early September and gradually decline into the 70’s by late September. Mornings and evenings can still be cool, and October tends to bring much chillier days. November is when the true cold starts to hit, and by Thanksgiving you’ll most likely be bundling up.
Overall, the season offers pretty comfortable sightseeing weather compared to both summer heat and winter cold. Days are usually cool, but early mornings and evenings require layering up a bit more.

🌤 Is Fall a Good Time to Visit New York?
Fall is one of the best times to visit New York. The weather is crisp, the city feels more local, and there are plenty of days to still enjoy the outdoors.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that September, October, and November offer very different experiences. Come in September for warmer weather and major events, October for classic fall foliage and Halloween, or November if you want to combine autumn activities with the beginning of the holiday season.
Why Fall Is One of the Best Times to Visit New York City
Fall in New York isn’t just about pumpkin being back (although it’s certainly a big perk). This is when the city gets packed with seasonal traditions, outdoor activities, sports, Halloween celebrations, and plenty of excuses to explore different neighborhoods.
🍁 There’s Gorgeous Fall Foliage Around NYC
You don’t need to leave New York City to see beautiful fall foliage. Central Park is the obvious choice, but there are colorful trees all over the city once autumn arrives.
Central Park is especially beautiful in October and November, with areas like the Ramble, The Mall, Bethesda Terrace, and the North Woods offering completely different scenery. You can also check out Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan, and other parks throughout the five boroughs.

🏈 Football Season is Back
Fall in New York City means football is back! New York has plenty of bars where you can spend a Sunday watching games, eating, drinking, and getting into the competitive spirit.
You don’t have to be a die-hard football fan to enjoy a good Sunday Funday in NYC. Pick a sports bar, grab some wings and drinks, and settle in for a few games. It’s also a great way to experience a more local side of the city if you’ve already spent your trip checking off the major attractions.
Also, don’t forget Metlife Stadium is just outside the city, and is the host for both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. If you get the chance, snag some tickets to enjoy a home game!

👻 The City is Full of Halloween Spirit
Halloween in New York City is a whole experience, and honestly, closely rivals the hype of spending Christmas in NYC. Once October arrives, decorated homes, spooky bars, themed parties, pumpkin displays, and Halloween events start popping up all over the city.
You can walk through neighborhoods covered in elaborate decorations, check out spooky bars, or head to the Village Halloween Parade for one of the city’s biggest Halloween traditions. We especially love exploring the decorated homes on the Upper East Side and in Dyker Heights.

🎃 Fall Flavors are Back
Fall in New York City also means a whole new lineup of seasonal foods and drinks. Pumpkin, apples, maple syrup, cinnamon, and all of those cozy fall flavors start showing up everywhere, from bakeries and cafes to cocktail menus and restaurants.
If you’re exploring the city, keep an eye out for pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, apple cider donuts, pumpkin pastries, maple desserts, and other seasonal specials. A lot of cafes and bakeries will bring out limited-time fall items, so this is a great excuse to try places you may not have on your usual NYC food list.
You can also find plenty of local fall products outside the city. If you take a day trip to farms in the Hudson Valley, Long Island, New Jersey, or Connecticut, look for fresh apples, apple cider, cider donuts, maple syrup, jams, pies, honey, and other locally made goods to bring home. And if you’re spending a Sunday watching football at a NYC bar, you’ll find plenty of gameday specials.
